I am trying to decided between a few units at Pitt County Memorial Hospital. I have shadowed on both the MICU and SICU and I have NO idea how to choose!!! Does anyone from PCMH have any experience on or with these units that they can share?
Actually, PCMH "lost" its Magnet Status during the recertification process a year or two ago. It will try again in a few years to regain this status."Magnet" only requires that the facility attempt to hire more BSNs. Most Magnet facilities still employ ADNs.
Did they really! I was out of the loop on that one! I remember them doing a lot of prep work when I was in nursing school. Thanks Vicky!
*LMAO*I just realized the title of the thread is Pitt *COUNTRY* Hospital (it's county), but country is probably the best way to describe it.
If you go five miles outside of town in any direction, it's flat and farmable.
LOL when my husband and I (wow, still getting used to saying that) went for a drive over the weekend to look around, we were amazed on how much like home it looked....minus the hills. Very rural, very quiet which we like. When we are able to get a house, we hope to get one out in the country.

Hi,
I actually applied to Pitt Community College last year and I've been checking home prices in the Greenville area, which seem pretty good, especially now. I'm wondering if it would make more sense to just purchase a home as opposed to renting if I relocate? I've seen some pretty nice homes for under 100K. Just wated to know what you've noticed since starting and maybe even how much apartments are running down there. I may be looking to start over with my two elementary school aged children. Pitt CC said they would accept any nursing courses I've already taken here in New York. Thanks so much for the advice.

What we've found so far in apartment rents are ranging anywhere from $345 for 1BR all the way to well over $1000 for 2 and 3BR. We've checked out apartments, townhomes, etc. So far no duplexes. We'd love a house for the simple reason...we have pets. Every rental we've checked out wants major fees for for the both of them and pet rent to boot. Both of us are disappointed in what we've found and looked at so far. We looked at one rental townhouse today that actually was decent. But its $600 with a $600 deposit plus $250 pet deposit. Fortunately no pet rent. If we could find a rent to own house in that price we'd jump on it.
www.remcoeast.com www.youngmgmt.com www.hearthsidemanagement.com are the three better propertiy management companies we've found so far. Young Management and Hearthside Management are at least a little more reasonable on the pet fees.
I don't know if this helps you any, but I hope it does. Renting for a little while until you decide exactly where your comfortable living is usually the best advice. Thoroghly research the schools though, I don't have kids yet so I can't help you there.

You have helped me Tremendously!! The rents are not too bad in Greenville. I am torn because I'm already in Nursing school up here in New York. If I start over down there, I'd have to wait to get into Pitt Comm College's program. Hmmmm, I've got some thinking to do. Thanks for the info!!
PCMH is a mixture of good and bad. It has some absolutely great units in which you can establish your nursing career, and it also has some units that will burn you out before your first year is finished.Good units (IMHO): cardiac floors. BTW, PCMH has just built a new state of the art cardiac center. Other good floors: postpartum, General Rehabilitation Unit. The nurses on 2 West (peds floor) seem generally satisfied. The newborn nursery is great, but doesn't have a lot of openings. The NICU also seems to be an excellent unit.
AVOID the med-surg units at PCMH like the plaque. The pace is chaotic, insanely busy, and most nurses end up working 13+ hrs and they're lucky if they get a break at all (to eat or go to BR). Worst unit in the hospital is the MIU (Medical Intermediate Unit). You will have 4 very complicated patients on vents, multiple drips, isolation, etc., and every other conceivable condition. Any other hospital in the area - these patients would be in an ICU with 1 nurse: 2 patient ratio. BEWARE! Also, on the SIU (Surgical Intermediate Unit), many nurses end up with back injuries. PCMH is considering establishing lift teams, which would really help. There is state-of-the art lifting equipment on the SIU, but many neglect to use it.
PCMH was a Magnet Hospital, but wasn't up to standard to renew. They'll try again in 2011. Physicians and administrators wield the real power in this facility and nurses don't have the control over their practice environment that they should. Others make critical decisions concerning nursing, often without consulting the nurses. Ultimately, the bottom line is the bottom line. Nurses on most units are very busy. There is one recent case in which an advanced practice nurse employee was reprimanded and her case turned over to the BON, over a mere dispute with a physician. This has seriously hurt nurse morale at this facility.
Greenville is very overgrown, as is entire Pitt County. It lacks the infrastructure to handle the rapid population growth it has been experiencing. Traffic can be insane, and I'm from up North. It can take 45 minutes to cross one side of the city to the other (Friday afternoons and other "busy" times). The crime rate is also high. One young man I know was attacked in his home (armed robbery). He was shot and later died from complications. There are lots of nice restaurants and shops, but I would rather not live in the city. There are nice areas to live outside of the city, such as Washington, Chocowinity, etc. You can also avoid the high city and county tax rates by commuting.
This is only one person's perspective. but I hope it helps. Good luck to you. If you do choose to move down here, welcome!
I saw that your post was written sometime ago. I know things do change. However, are you a current employed at Pitt County Memorial Hospital? It's ironic you say the MIU is the worst unit because that is the unit I am interviewing for this coming december:idea:. I am applying for the Nurse Residency program 2012. I don't want to be bias and I know there are always going to be good and bad units. I pray G-d takes me where I need to be. I am open to learning if they are willing to teach me. Anymore advice you can share will be very helpful. Again, thank you for sharing.

Hi all, I am new grad RN and I have an Interview at Pitt County Memorial Hospital.
How do they treat their nurses? They portray PCMH as a great environment for nurses and how they listen to their employees. I am open to relocating, but i want to make sure the place I began my career is a place that advocates for their nurses, encourage their nurses, motivates nurses for higher education and so forth.
I look forward to hearing your stories and good news about Pitt.
urgh new grad jitters are no joke
Thank you and God bless

PCMH is already Magnet status. They'd wither away or go broke from paying traveler's if they required everyone to have a BSN.
