Personnal lives or reckless?

Published

i have a question as nurses when should it be a "you should know better because your a medical professional" or if it is just living out lives?

see i often wonder if my hobby is one of recklessness or not. i ride horses, but not only ride its kind of a passion. i compete (or did last summer) and i do quite a bit of training. so here is the reckless part, i take 1500 pound animals to 4ft fences at quite an alarming pace (its faster than it looks). and if the horses get scared or just doesn't agree with my plans i can end up kissing the dirt or worse the fence or the horse's feet. i also start from scratch on several horses each summer, being the first one on a horse is an incredible feeling, and being with them as they start to understand that riding can be a fun and exiting.

i feel on top of the world when i'm riding and at the barn, i would never give up that feeling for anything. i know it is a dangerous hobby, and i have my riding injury list (a few to many broken bones, and 3 concussions) but to me it is worth it.

what hobbies do other nurses have that maybe could also be considered reckless or fall into the category or "you should know better"? i'm just trying to learn more about the people whose profession i will soon be joining.

thanx sr

i reread and edited and some of the spelling and grammer, but i'm sure it's still not perfect:p

I think you will find nurses that enjoy every imaginable 'dangerous' hobby you could come up with. Skydiving, SCUBA, long distance solo sailing... Some of my past and present colleagues have also been involved in motocross racing, rock climbing, unprotected sex... (Who said that?)

Didn't know that was a hobby!!!! LOL

:rotfl:

wannabe- i know my spelling and grammer suck, i never pretendent that i was good at either. It is one of my weekness and it is something that I just have to work through. Spellcheck and a good proof reader are all it takes to be able to hand in a stellar essay. My math and logical skills make up for what I lack in spelling.

I have already been accepted to nursing school, the 4 year BScN program. I'm happy for you for going back to school, but please don't pi$$ me because i'm doing it right out of highschool. thanx SR

I just though this would be a fun topic to get to know each other.

Specializes in Hey I'm now an RN!!.
As far as hobbies go, I say "to each his own."

BUT, as far as you joining the profession, I suggest you take a refresher course in grammar and spelling before you apply to nursing school. Didn't you just graduate from high school? How can your grammar be that bad when you just got out of school? Just how many concussions have you had?

I'm sorry to be so mean, but I am applying to nursing school late in life and I am very nervous about getting into school. It makes me sick to know that people who can't even speak or write their OWN language could be accepted. :uhoh3:

I think that was pretty mean, and that you did mean it. Was it really necessary to be that harsh? I believe grammar reflects professionalism also-but that was just uncalled for. Aren't tact and compassion required for nursing? If so, I suggest you practice those aspects before entering the profession :uhoh21:.

Can't someone have alight hearted discussion on this board? I must say, I particiapate in some bodybuilding discussion boards, but this nursing crew is a rough bunch. Some people here should lighten up like the meatheads. Whoda thunk it? (yup, i said thunk)

I'm with you. This can be a rough crowd.

******* shaking my head******** sigh.........

To the OP:

Hey there! I think you have a great hobbie!!

I don' t have one at the moment, but Im looking for suggestions!!!! :chuckle

Specializes in Specializes in L/D, newborn, GYN, LTC, Dialysis.

I already take part in one of the most dangerous professions there are (nursing can be VERY risky)......so why NOT go:

skydiving

horseback riding

water skiiing

mountain climbing

ice fishing/skating

jet skiiing

scuba diving

bear/deer/ snake whatever hunting

whitewater rafting

whatever takes your fancy to do..........................

life is to be LIVED. those who hold back soley due to potential danger, are NOT living it! Just use your head! And HAVE FUN!!!!

Don't harp on someone else because you have insecurities about your own abilities to get into nursing school. Chill out. We're not in class.

I am the biggest chicken on the face of this earth. I couldn't answer your question. Living recklessly for me is leaving pizza out all night, and then (OMG) eating it the next morning. I am such a boring person:)

I love to ride horses, just ride though not jump. And I also love to iceskate, but I dont get to do either of these anymore now that I am a wife and a mother, seems there is just not enough time. But I drive way too fast, I know I shouldn't but it is fun, I also smoke........see I live dangerously. lol
