Ok. I brought myself a can of diet coke to work today. I knew my day would be messed up because I worked a couple hrs off a couple hrs took a kid to the doc then back on an hr. I came back in in the afternoon and finally sat down to finish my charting and I look beside the computer and sitting there on the counter was an opened Diet Coke. I lifted it up and it was almost full - but the most interesting part is that the can also has an X in black marker written on the can -- THe same X that I had drawn on my can when I put it in the fridge. Someone had helped themselves to my can of DIET COKE!
I immediately said to the nurse I was with "Well someone liked my diet coke just as much as I do since my can is here and opened" I then proceeded to get the can of pop, walk over to the sick and dump THE WHOLE CAN OF POP down the sink. If I can't have my pop, then NOONE is going to drink my diet coke!
Why are there some jerks who think they can help them selves to other peoples food/drinks in the break room fridge? KEEP YOU MITTS OFF OF MY FOOD AND DRINK!!! Sorry for the vent. I was steaming!:angryfire An act like this shows that a person has NO reguard or respect for their coworkers. Ridiculous!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know you are upset, but maybe it was a mistake? It's possible someone else brought a diet soda and put it in the fridge then went to grab it and didn't notice the X you had drawn on it.
I guess I wouldn't have dumped it down the sink but rather just put a mental not in my head not to stick something in there without a name on it rather than just an X.
Hopefully it won't happen again. Take care.

I had someone quite a while back take my salad and pick all the cheese, tomatoes, radishes, cucumbers....everything extra out. All I had left was the lettuce. They even took my tupperware container with my salad dressing and a little bag of croûtons! I was beyond flabbergasted at the audacity.

hahahaha I think that is hilarious! (about the fact that you poured it down the sink, NOT that somebody stole your diet coke) Some people are unbeleivable... Im just a student but i stopped taking my wallet to clinical because i got 20 dollars stolen from me in the nurses break room. Not cool!

well...if there was another diet coke in the fridge at all I could see your point of view. But there wasn't. We all bring our own drinks. There were 3 of us and the other nurse had her diet dew. We are a small unit. There was no mistake. I wish.

We had a chronic "Diet Coke Thief" on our unit. The only D.C. user was our Unit Director. Turns out it was one of our attending surgeons- The hospital supplies beverages in the doctors O.R. break room so when he saw D.C. in out unit fridge he just assumed it was hospital provided and helped himself rather than walk over to O.R. to fetch one. He was pretty red faced when he found out he was the notorious coke thief.
I hope it was an honest mistake but I wouldn't bet on it. Perhaps someone was too busy to run out and get one and thought you had left for the day. They may have intended to replace it before your next shift. At least you can tell yourself that.

this happens all the time. you bring something to work with you and then some clown comes along and drinks it. in your case, they probably took a few sips and walked away. what a pain.
when i was doing my rn clinicals some clown "stole" another nurses purse, so the nurse said. she had put it in a room where everyone had access. needless to say, we, the nursing students were held up by security until the matter was resolved. in the end she, the nurse, had misplaced her purse after all. what a waste of time that was.
eta: i had a physician "steal" my stethoscope in clinicals one day. i guess my cheap one was better than none at all. he did bring it back, though

Med students, residents, surgeons seem to be the worst offenders of this where I work. We were having a farewell party for one of the techs and had put the food out early before she came down. They actually posted me down there to watch the stuff and sure enough, here comes a med student none of us had laid eyes on before, making a beeline for the food. I set him straight and then he tried to open a bottle of soda someone had brought for the party! I set him straight on that one too. Come to find out-he wasn't even doing his stint in the OR, he came in from the outside because I guess he heard we had food. Vultures!

One of the places I worked had that happen a lot... well at least until somebody took a bottle of apple juice and wrote "urine sample" on it.

One day i had food in the fridge labeled with my name and DO NOT TOUCH in big red letters.
Two hours later I return to savor my delicious chicken dinner to discover that someone took a bite out of the breast and ate half my biscuit then put them back in the box.
I was so upset and disgusted and I confronted the person and told him that not only was that wrong and disgusting but shameful that he had to steal people's food.
P.S. Said person takes trays from patients that have been D/C'ed or gone to O.R.
