I went in today for my urine drug screen at my new job (I"ve been doing agency there for many months, know everyone well)

The hospital laid off 30 non-patient care providers from ancillary depts this week. They are feeling the pinch. Elective and semi-elective admissions are down, plus the hospital is having to eat the bills of patients under the new Medicare rules. Also, they've spent millions on agency personnel this year.

I'm glad I had such an in with this hospital. The manager told me that all the nurses on the unit volunteered to write letters of recommendation for me to be hired. I'm so thankful to have found a unit where I'm so warmly appreciated.

I wonder what the next year will bring? I feel like we are all in this recession together, with hard times ahead. We need to be kind to one another. Many in our communities are already hurting.

All those laid off will be in my thoughts and prayers. My heart goes out to all of them.

I'm so happy you work surrounded by kind and supportive people. Makes work so much more enjoyable when that happens.

It seems that many hospitals are doing this right now. Some are even laying off medical/nursing staff. It's scary times right now lets hope things start to improve next year..:nurse:

Thanks batman. It is a treasure to have a congenial workplace, I'm very grateful.

I'm worried about our nation though. I think we are facing a major economic disaster that will get worse.

Well, who couldn't love ya?? I am glad to hear that they took you in the fold before this happened, but I can understand your sentiments. It is a scary time. I have many moments of silence thinking about the unfortunate people who are losing their jobs at this time.

I agree. I think it will get much worse before it gets better. My husband worked for Lehman and was blessed to be part of the transfer to Barclays. Many of those we know haven't been half as lucky. He watches people he's know for years get laid off by the dozens every day and his heart is broken for them. This is sadly happening at many other companies as well.

Only thing to do is try not to overspend on what you don't need and if you have debt start paying it down. And pray you keep your job because it's a really bad time to be without one.

Someone at work today was discussing our nation's economic plight and the fact that several people we work with are having a difficult time d/t spouses being out of work. We have started a canned food drive for employee's to go along with the turkey the facility gives us, we are collecting toys, and other items for the kids, hopefully this will help a little.

Our canned food/toy/clothing drives are even suffering, because last year, the bins used to be so full, but now, many of them are empty. :crying2: People just can't afford it, I guess...

30 people got laid off. It just goes to show how expendable unskilled labor is. Be proud that your work and efforts during school have made you into a inexpendable asset for a hospital.

I think that not all of these laid off workers could be termed 'unskilled'. Some of them most likely worked in billing, medical records, or other positions.

We saw some of this happening within our healthcare system. They were not all unskilled at all. Some were nurses who were in management positions. The next year or two is uncertain for anyone.Of course there will always be a need at the bedside, however will it end up being such economic hardships that at some point the hospitals revert to higher patient caseloads and less nurses working. That is the unanswered question at this point. It is a wait and see everywhere.

Congrats on your new job.

It is nice to hear of a kind and caring place to work. It makes one feel blessed by their surroundings!
