OK, I have a big beef here. I'm currently in my first year of nursing, and I feel like I have to say something regarding nurses complaining about their pay.
Reading these boards, I just came across someone who said they make $34 an hour in Ontario, and they were telling someone that if they're looking to make money, go into accouting or something. THis just floored me!
$34 and hour!!!! How can you tell me that is not making money? Many many nurses who work in Ontario get WAY less than that.
I just really don't understand.
People are always saying, "if you're in this profession to make money, get out because you won't be rich." This is ridiculous. I live in SK Canada, where nurses make $24 starting (I think) or if not, it's very close to that figure. That is considered a WELL paying job. How can you not live comfortably on pay like that? I know many many many many people who make considerably less than that, and they do just fine.
Some nurses say that there is no money in nursing. Has anyone heard of a Nurse Practitioner? I know they don't make millions, but they do make more than RN's, some even make 6 figures. I am going to be one. Once I'm an RN, I'm working in the ER for one year, then returning to school for a 30 week course. YOu don't have to be a genious to do this either.
I know that you have to love nursing to be in it. You CANNOT be in it JUST FOR THE MONEY, but it makes me mad when people say THERE IS NO MONEY. Some areas pay nurses more than others.
I know it's a lot of work, it's stressful, and it's a hard job, and I know that many people (including me) feel that we should be payed more for what we do, but come on people. Doesn't it make you mad when people who make $34 an hour complain they don't have enough money? Do you spend foolishly? The cost of living in Ont is higher than SK, but $34 an hour is STILL much more than many many people in that prov make.
i have several friends (in Wisconsin) that are coming out of BSN programs and entering nursing (with nothing more than clinical experience) making $25/hour (~$48K/year). by working evening & weekend shifts - many are up to $30/hour (~$57.6K/year).
if what some of these posters are saying is true (i.e. nurses with 10-20 yrs experience making $15-$18/hour) - that's just freakin' sad!! is there really nothing that can be done about that??

Ditto.
In 1998 when I graduated, as a staff nurse in L&D I made $21.00/hour.
In 2003, as a Nurse Educator required to hold a Master's, I make $21.00/hour. I live in Wisconsin, and the new grads here make $25.00/hour.
You do the math.
:chuckle
I was recently reading an article in Popular Science magazine about some of the most disgusting jobs in the world i.e. armpit sniffer, jobs dealing w/human and/or animal waste. obtaining various specimens of animal excrement-- u see where this is going :)). The salaries were posted and most were higher than what I make as a 20 year veteran RN. I thought that they should come and follow a nurse around for a shift--we get to do all those things in 1 job!!
I live in LI, NY where starting salary for nurses is 65k and you can make up to 85k with overtime. This is according to the papers, my school and every nurse I come into contact with. I think that's an amazing starting salary and will be thrilled to have it. I have heard that salaries don't progress as much as in other fields and so often people have to switch jobs to get more money for their experience. Well then, so be it, as far as I'm concerned nobody can underpay you unless you let them --there are just too many opportunities available!
my biggest complaint is in the disparity. Sure would love to move back to a union area where this was addressed at least in part.
Sad when new grads who will need months and months of support off the backs and brains and energy of the regulars will start out at 25 hr base. Now THAT said consider this:
I work with a charge nurse with over 20 yrs experience who was making several dollars less an hr. In the same facility mind you. I work perdiem no benes for 28 hr and just found out a part timer on day shift WITH benes makes 31 hr. She has been a nurse for 7 yrs, me for 27. We do the same job....
These practices do nothing for morale and maybe this is part of management's plan. They certainly do NOT value the experienced nurse in my facility. The game is political azzkissing, 'what have you done for me lately' and favorites are played.
If this sounds petty and selfish to students and youngsters, I say what many here have said: talk to us after doing this job for 10 yrs or so and see if you feel the same way THEN...
We all make our decisions and do the best we can. And no, life ain't fair. But we have the right to ventilate.
I'd just like to say that I'm perfectly happy with my job and the $$ I'm earning. If you want somthing to complain about try farming, there's all the responsibility that you'd ever want 24/7 hours with hardly making any $$, sometimes even making -$$. I'm just glad I have a dependable job and make enough to live comfortably on.
Hi guys I am fairly new to the forum so im going to start by saying "nice to meet all of you." I currently am an accounting student in her last year of school and is interested in applying for an accelerated RN program. I am currently interning in my field and have no desire to do this for the rest of my life. Nursing is something that i just recently became interested in while working the summer at a hospital here in Ny. So let me cut to the chase, an RN's salary in New York is highly acclaimed but no one is disclosing just how much it is that they make. Maybe you guys can clear it up for me. Now don't get me wrong it's not all the about the pay with me. I am a person who enjoys working with people in a professional healthcare enviornment but frankly the money is important. It is very hard to get by in the city especially when you are very particular as to the things you want in life. So lay it on me guys and dont be afraid to give it to me how it is.
It certaintly won't be too discouraging,

If you are looking to work as an RN in NYC, you pretty much need to have a BSN...while you can get a job with an ADN, I believe that some hospitals like NYU and Mt. Sinai require BSNs. I believe that the starting wage is between $60,000 and $65,0000, but than you need to take into consideration that a nice apartment in the city is probably going to cost $2K or more. But if you love the city, there are definitely pluses to being an RN.
I'm doing my schooling down here in FL, but once I am able...I still see NYC in my future.
Good luck!

I also live in SK and am at the top of the pay scale. Living here is expensive. If you want, I can lay out my budget for you. I know people with multiple vehicles, toys, plus several kids and don't know how they do it. I do know some who are perpetually in debt. I, by no means, am a wealthy man.
Well, I'm not sure if the person who started this thread is 'for-real', but saying that $34/hour is 'good' money.....it just depends on where you live. If you live near L.A , that $34/hour might pay your gas bill to and from work. In other parts, like my state of Oklahoma, you'de be living pretty darn good.
I would love to make that, heck--I'de be estatic about it, but to each his/her own right?? Whatever our pay, for what we do and what we put up with, it is not enough, right?!?!?!?!
Now, I would like to know if anybody would really feel comfortable being cared for by a NP with only .............30 weeks............formal training??? Not me!!! It must be one of those 'diploma' mills you hear about!

Well, the average price of houses in the town I live in is over $500,000. Our little three bedroom condo cost nearly 400,000. The price of our gasoline is one of the highest in the country....so, 34 an hour sounds like so-so pay. The hospitals in our area are paying about 25 an hour to start...you can NOT own a house and pay bills on that in our town....so I'll probably be traveling north to work for more money. I guess what sounds like a lot really doesn't mean a lot when you take cost of living into play.

I haven't seen a NP program yet that didn't require a MS degree which of course lowers the salary to wages ratio even further! If anyone does know of one please let me know. Setons NP programs also requiring an MS in Nursing, cost $50 to $60K in tuition, Hello! I am a nursing student also about to graduate hopeing to make $20/hr. That will be great because it beats waiting on tables or go-go dancing. But I am old an single an never expect to raise a family, buy a home, or probably even take much of a vacation before I croak, or face mandatory retirement! But you're right its better than living under the Taliban in Afganistan ----- Gratefull for Nursing, but not mindlessly deluded
