My penile implant pt's ALWAYS come back with a foley. They usually are totally bandaged and have an ice pack when they come to me from PACU. I NEVER lift up the dressing unless there is signs of bleeding. Sometimes they have scrotal support too. I just try to make them comfortable and check the dressing every hour for any signs of bleeding.
Yes, you can insert a foley. Yes, they are permanently in a "ready to go active." state. This depends on the type of implant-rigid or inflatable http://www.americanmedicalsystems.com/mens_erectile_products_objectname_male_AMS_700.html

heh, thanks kath.
i really was being sincere when i posted that, albeit, appreciative of the implications.:)
when i'm stressed to the max and have needy/demanding pts, i have been known to hurriedly enter a rm and say, "what's up?"
so yeah, i caution against greeting a pip (penile-implant pt ) with a "what's up?" salutation.
i just finished this book. there are 2 whole chapters about impotence and implants......(it is a wonderful read by the way...)
you know it has been a long day, when you try to click on the "look inside" of the book.:icon_roll
*sigh*
leslie
leslie,
i know what you mean about it being a long day... i just finished typing a french test for herb and had to look for the underline key after i had finished typing every stinkin' question. i never have minded typing exams, it's just that when it's this close to midnight, it takes more effort. you would think i'd remember more french student french, wouldn't you? :dzed::sstrs:

I have had no experience with men with penile implaints. Can a pt with this get a foley catheter if needed? Any precautions should be taken other than making sure it is not inflated.
