Peds at Bridgeport Hosp info needed

I may be relocating from the UK to take up a post here. I am a PNP in the UK and have NClex.
What is the surrounding area like?
Housing I have a 5 and 6 yr old and Husband Initally plan to rent then buy and suggestions to areas? How is commuting and how far is reasonable to move out of the city?
Good School areas?
Anybody work there can give me any info?

Bridgeport is a very dangerous city (with gangs) and a very high crime rate, not to mention lots of other problems. It is probably one of the MOST dangerous areas of Connecticut. You would NOT want to live in Bridgeport.

There are many other lovely towns around it (Fairfield, for instance) but as they are all bedroom towns of NYC, they are extremely expensive and real estate prices are the highest in Connecticut down in that area.

Interstate 95 runs along that area and is a nightmare. It is not big enough to handle all the commuter traffic there. Commuting along that corridor is awful.

You might be a bit luckier looking at towns NORTH and WEST of Bridgeport (up Route 8, for instance), as far as living goes. Do NOT move into or buy anything or rent within Bridgeport!!

I believe the hospital is very good: very big, large city hospital.

This all is, of course my personal opinion. I have lived in Connecticut for over 20 years and have even commuted from here to NYC.

Bridgeport is probably THE worst city in Connecticut and I think most would agree with me. Could you pick somewhere else? If not, be very careful when you are looking for living accomodations.

Sorry to be such a downer but it is really bad. Downtown Waterbury is bad as well.

The closer you go to NYC, the more expensive everything gets.

BETSRN thanks for the reply. I have the job now but am thinking of perhaps Trumbull or Shelton as I realise from my searching about Bridgeport itself being a concern and not somewhere I would live, Because I have 2 children ages 5 and 6 I need them to be secure/safe in School. I would appreciate any other info you have on the surrounding areas within a 30 min max commute.

I don't live in CT anymore, but lived there my whole childhood. I remember Shelton and Trumbull as nice places. The other poster is right about Bridgeport....other cities I'd stay away from are Waterbury and Hartford...but you aren't going to be near hartford a lot. Monroe was really nice and also Milford was kind of middle class (several years ago) but with Milford you'd be driving on 95. The one nice thing about CT is that it's not that big ( I live in CA now) so driving from Monroe to say Bridgeport might take 45 minutes at the most....not sure what traffic is like there now, but it used to take 1/2 hour so....which is worth it for better schools and better areas.

I'm a nursing student going through my peds clinical at Bridgeport right now, so although I don't know much (not actually working there), as far as I can tell its a nice floor. My only problem with it (as a student) is that the census is often reeeeeeeally low so there's usually very little to do! Also, I believe the floor's in a bit of a state of flux right now since they're looking for a new manager and lost some other staff rather suddenly. And they all just switched to a brand new computer-based charting system that seems to be driving everyone completely nuts.

But hopefully those wrinkles will be ironed out by the time you get there. :)

Since I don't live in Bridgeport, I can't tell you too much about the city itself, other than as far as its reputation goes. :rolleyes:

Thanks all this helps me I am due to travel over on the 23rd May and I start on 6th June In PICU. I am hopefully going to be renting for a few months in either Milford or Trumbull.

This year, there were a few murders and other crimes, but it is not that dangerous as you have described. If you look at all the murders this year, almost all of them were drugs related. No innocent people died. So if you not in drugs or other dangerous activities, you dont have to worry. I grew up in New York City (Brooklyn). Trumbull, Fairfield and Westport may have other crimes that go unreported because of money. There are devils everywhere you go. You just have to keep your noise clean. I also believe since I am a child of God, He will watch over me. I dont have to be afraid of any place.

There are some great areas in Bridgeport, North End and Treeland area.

I live in East Hartford. Hartford county is the worst place to live in CT (crime wise). Bridgeport isn't too bad nowadays according to statistics.

There are some good areas in BPT. I Live the town over in have worked in a lot of faciltys and clinics in BPT i never had any problems.

I have lived in fairfield all my life-excellent school system-trumbull just as good. Check out http://www.realtor.com and you can do a search for rents available as well as houses/condos for sale. Hope this helps!:)

I have lived in Fairfield County my whole life and lived in Bridgeport for five years in the late 80's. Bridgeport has some very nice neighborhoods, but if you don't know the area you have no way to know what you are getting into. Truth is the public school system in Bridgeport is a disaster right now. Taxes are very high there also. Trumbull, Monroe, Shelton, Fairfield, Devon are all good towns to look at for a residence. I have had multiple opportunities to use Bridgeport Hospital for my healthcare and I can say without a doubt it is a good hospital (though they have a bad cockroach problem).
