in their room to provide some form of care. Who else has an issue with this? It's as if they are in the hospital for us to take care of them, but we are on their personal time.

I can understand the nurse's POV, I've been there. I'm not a nurse yet, but at a student nurse and as a CNA. However I've also been the pt. Life doesn't stop b/c you are ill. Things still need to be taken care of. When I was in the hospital if I was on the phone when the nurse entered I would try to get off, but sometimes it isn't that easy.

There's a difference between things that need to be taken care of and socializing. It doesn't take but a few seconds of listening to a conversation to tell the difference, and I think that most of us here are understanding when it's truly the former and not the later.

Quite a few of my ALF residents sent me away when they were on a long-distance call. I simply came back later. If that meant the meds or treatment were late, they were late. If they ended up not being done, I considered it a refusal.

I listen to their conversation for a bit..sometimes it is important as in the pateint is telling a family member they were hospitalized..but since I have to go all over the hospital I can not always come back in a timely manner. I tell them "excuse me but you will have to get off the phone now so I can provide the care your doctor ordered for you"

Please tell me I'm not the only person who laughed out loud at the title of the post...

Oh, look...past my bed time...

i never care if they are on the phone. If I have meds for them I set it beside them and if they have questions they ask. I can check back with them later to complete an assessment etc. Usually if they are well enough to chat on the phone they can't be too distressed. I cannot imagine it fun being a patient and I am more than willing to work around their schedule as much as I can.

Take a seat, get out your cell phone and call your girl. Have the loudest most obnoxious conversation about....member size and see what happens.

Ok. Just kidding, but wouldn't that be awesome!?! I'd just say "Hi can I interupt you real quick?" then explain what youre needing to do and ask if you can come back in a few minutes to get it done.
