Pasadena City College RN program

Published

Hi,

I've heard that it's not recommended to work while enrolled as a student in an RN program. I'm applying for the Spring Semester at PCC and while I do intend to leave my current employer should I be accepted, I was wondering if there were people who made the attempt to work part-time or possibly in the summer.

Any opinions?

Thanks!

I haven't heard anything yet, no email or letter. Someone said PCC said we should hear something by the end of the week, so hopefully by tomorrow i'll hear something, but i guess if you were accepted you would have heard something by now. Guess its time to get the spring 2013 applications ready, total drag lol

It's not random chance. Your cut score is based on what you mentioned and that is how everyone is then placed into the lottery. Not everyone has time to volunteer or get straight A's. Some people are single parents who work a couple jobs to support their families and who sacrifice that A for more time with their children. It wouldn't be fair to those people if they didn't have a chance. :-)

I don't know if the schedule is out yet, but keep checking PCC's website, it should be posted soon! This semester it was basically everyone had theory together friday morning. Then you have pharmacology, I believe there were 2 classes offered. You then have your clinical group, which is the group you do your rotations with as well as attend your other class which is skills/seminar. The first rotation was at a nursing home and the 2nd was at a hospital. I believe the different hospitals were Good Sam, Glendale, Garfield and 2 others which I can't recall.

Specializes in Float Pool.

I received an e-mail saying I'm an alternate.

Does anyone know if it's possible for me to "give up" my alternate spot so it can go to someone else?

I'm already done with my paperwork for the ELAC program that's starting in two weeks..

Thank you PCC for doing so though!

Well, I heard this argument already :-)

It has the typical logical fallacy - Appeal to Pity.

Congratulations to everybody who was accepted!

I really like the people who work in the nursing department of PCC.

Everyone has different grades, motivations, circumstances and although some may not agree we all have the same goal. . . To help people and become nurses.

For those of you who have been selected please update with any new information. Congrats once again!!

The only update I have is that I went to PCC today to talk to the financial aid office to get the ball rolling on aid. It looks like I will have to jump through some hoops and petition because I have a B.A. That bummed me out because I automatically qualified for BOG at another program. Kind of confusing process.

For those of us who got calls, I'm wondering if the acceptance is a sure thing. Or if it's tentative after they get TEAS scores from everyone (second lottery?). I accepted a spot in another program but I'm reluctant to give it up until I know that PCC's offer is official.

I don't think so. . . When I received the call I said, ” so I'm in right?” He laughed and said yes ! Seems like no one is answering though. I called just now to ask about the second lottery (if they had one) and I wanted to confirm acceptance lol!!

Just called PCC they said that notifications are still being sent out, and to call them back if you don't hear anything by next tuesday for those still waiting for a response.

Vikont, while I understand your arguement, it sort of ticks me off when people like you, who are going to a community funded college, where a lot of people on financial aid, welfare recipents, probation work study programs, go to college. Imagine how many of us smart, dedicated people who may not have the money or socioeconomic staus to go to 4 year universities would be barred from becoming nurses. There are people with BSN's who will give you a taste of your own medicine makeing you feel less than because you don't have what it takes to come into the nursing game with higher stats. So just like us who have a lot of responsibilites like children and working 3 jobs, we deserve that chance. I went through two pregnancies while doing my pre-reqs and that doesn't make me any less than because of my 3.4 gpa. If I didn't have those responsibilities, I'd have a 5.0 gpa (the extra point for being awesome).

sorry, denisenike, i didn't realize that you took it so personally.

and i don't have any doubts that you are awesome :-)

and, by the way..i also have few kids and plenty of responsibilities.

let's stop arguing. appeal to pity will bring us nowhere...

it is as it is! i can't change the lottery system. i am just a sore loser who likes to complain:-)

Hey Vikont,it is ok to complain. I have kid, work but I manage to volunteer getting an A. I just sacrifice a lot of things and work harder. I understand where you are coming from and get your point. Getting all A is not easy and you should get some reward for that. It is just not your luck may be.

Well, evatelia, lets hope that we will receive our letters of acceptance or alternate from PCC soon. :-)

..next week probably?
