U.S.A. California

Has anyone recieved an acceptance letter from Pasadena yet. They said it would be 10 weeks after the application period closed. Well it's closed and it's been 10 weeks. Whats the word???

hi, vnngo

I am from Elac. I got accepted at RHC, Elac, and PCC. I went to RHC but I already dropped the class. Honestly, I really like RHc, the teachers are so intelligent, students are so friendly. I just did the first exam, I passed with a C (I really thought I failed). But then I decided to go to PCC in this fall because it's closer for me, so I woudn't need to spend so much time on driving.

Vnngo, Did you get accepted at PCC too??? I don't know the cost of PCC nursing program, but I do know the cost of RHC is around $2600 for 2 years.

BTW, I also want to share my experience when I was in the program. It's tough but fun. I have learned a lot for 2 weeks. If you are in the program, you have to work harddddd and study study study every day. So guys, please be ready for it...Good luck!!!

omgitsmari,

I haven't taken those 2 classes yet...and they are both currently full for both summer and fall sessions. I realized I misread my admission email from SMC and missed my registration date. I emailed my counselor today for advisement. How about you? have you taken them? If so how were they and who were your instructors? I know one of them is also offered online.

I did get in for pcc. I know mt sac is 5.5k...which is a little more than double RHC...

For the PCC nursing program, you only pay as you go.... $26.00 a unit + cost of books. 4 semesters....about 9-10.5 units per semester. So cost not including books, about $1,014.00. Books can run a few thousand dollars or much less if you buy used on ebay in advance. You really don't even need all the books they say you need. You can simply use some of them in the library instead of buying them.

Hey everyone!

I'm planning to apply for Spring 2011, but I'm a little confused about the math requirement. I took Math 1 - Mathematical Reasoning at Sac State, which is equivalent to Math 15 at PCC. Does anyone know if I'm eligible to apply with this math course?

How does PCC select their students (wait list, lottery)? I've already taken English, Anatomy, Physiology, & Microbiology & have a 4.0 GPA in those classes. Do they also consider overall GPA?

Any advice or feedback would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

No Lottery, No waitlist. Either you get in or you are chosen as an alternate should any of those chosen drop out at the last minute. Good job on the grades - that's the most important consideration; esp those classed you mentioned. And....if you retook any classes or received any withdrawals...those don't make you look as good and will drop your score. Don't know about the math class except that Math 125 is a beginning algebra class. It's best to verify it with a counselor. Either way, go ahead and apply. If you have to take another math class you can always do it during intersession! Best of Luck!

@moretolearn do you know what are the major books that are required for 1st semester. ------ is my main teacher, n50.

Yes. They tell you to buy so many unnecessary books...I think they are just trying to keep the bookstore making lots of money!! LOL. The main books you'll need to start are most recent editions of:

Kozier & Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing: Concepts, Process, and Practice

Medical-Surgical Nursing by Joseann Dewitt, Karen Burke, Mary Ann Hogan, Priscilla Lemone

Pharmacology A Nursing Process Approach Joyce Lefever Kee & Evelyn Hayes

Dosage Calculations By Pickar

There are lots of other books they tell you to buy but there is no assigned reading in those other books and you can just look at them at the library if you want (They allow you to check out current books for 2 hours at a time in the library to use as reference). Don't waste your money buying them. You could use a nursing care plan book and a drug book (Davis's Drug Guide) but you can buy older editions if you wish or just get the research info needed online:

http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/meds/a681045.html

http://www.labtestsonline.org/

I didn't even like the nursing care plan book they tell you to buy and discovered that there were better ones out there! Also, you'll need the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association 6th edition but again, you can just use the one in the library.

Hope that helps...good luck!

More To Learn

p.s. There will be a few more books you'll need in 2nd & 3rd semester but no need to worry about those now.

Hi More to Learn. I appreciate the book list!! So those books you listed are the ones we should for sure? Also would you say that we need the books to study for the Nclex later? Or is it just for the 1st semester or all semesters???I was thinking about renting the books...

The syllabus should now be available for purchase and will confirm the books / editions that you need. Be sure to go purchase it at PCC bookstore right away...they often run out. As far as I know, the below books have not been replaced with other books but I would double check.

1. Kozier & Erb's Fundamentals of Nursing: Concepts, Process, and Practice

2. Medical-Surgical Nursing by Joseann Dewitt, Karen Burke, Mary Ann Hogan, Priscilla Lemone

3. Pharmacology A Nursing Process Approach Joyce Lefever Kee & Evelyn Hayes

4. Dosage Calculations By Pickar

Of the above books; #1 need 1st & 2nd semester (may help w/NCLEX study if you have no other books to study from), #2 need all 4 semesters & NCLEX review, #3 & #4: need primarily for 1st semester (and a tiny bit in 4th semester) but you will have dosage calculation exams in all 4 semesters so you will either need to keep for reference or plan on using ones at library for review before each exam at the beginning of each semester.

If you want to save money, suggest buying used books on ebay or amazon.com...unfortunately, it may take time to find the best deal & be shipped. Be sure to check current prices at bookstore to know you are getting a good deal!

You'd better get started...you have a lot of reading to do!

PS. do you have a PCC mentor? If not, pm me and I will give you more info.

Hi More to learn. I actually dont know how to PM you using this site haha...I would love a PCC mentor! I gave them my email but have received nothing =[. Are you a mentor?

A friend of a friend was in the PCC nursing program and just graduated. She told me see also uses the Davis drug guide book. The APA manual, the Nursing care Plan, and the manual of lab drug tests. As well as the 4 books you mentioned. Should I buy the other things as well on top of the 4 required texts ....? Or are they rarely used if used at all..? thanks =]
