Pasadena city college nursing school

U.S.A. California

I was looking at the PCC nursing school brochure and it said that upon acceptance of nursing school, they take the grade point average of the required prerequisite courses only. Does this mean that every other class that I took and received a grade for has no effect on their decision to accept me or not? Thank you very much

Im sure if you have completed eveything already it will make you a more competitive candidate. They want someone who is going to start and finish and be successful. If you have taken all the other courses required and passed them successfully with A's and B's, I think you will get in.....

Thank you sooo much!! I will check back in to see if they have any tips or advice, and All of your info was very helpful to me. I wish you well in your search for a job and more importantly for that NCLEX!!!

man people with 4.0's arent getting in, i was an engineering major and it is a really REALLY HARD major to do, my GPA fell almost below a 3.0, & now i am worried i wont get in when i apply next spring....

anyone apply and get in with

More to Learn:

I know, i was just being sarcastic that in the fact that

a) nurses are pretty important

b) the fact is that those smart ppl getting in & won't make good nurses (or are just being a nurse to get into a job "quickly") get the spot that others [like you & me want because its our passion to do]

that just irks me lol

Alyssa,

I have not asked everyone, >>>nor expected a honest answer

By the way, that GPA doesn't apply to guys...they can get away with lower grades ....cause they want more male nurses!! Doesn't seem fair but that's the way it is!

Oh well, all you can do is try your best, hope & pray that i will get in when i can....

Well i won't only be applying to PCC, but to CSULB (its like 45 miles away but w/e) and the remaining ADN programs up to 60 mile radius around me (i live down the street from Citrus College; ive heard they are really competitve) hopefully I get into @ ONE of the them....

cause for now, thats the hardest part...

After re-reading my own posts, I just want to clarify my comments in a more positive way...there are some absolutely wonderful students in the PCC RN program...most of which I would be happy to have as my own nurse should I become sick. But yes, there are a few who want to be a nurse because they heard the hype, want the money, or just want a way in to the US. And the guys....well, they may get in the program with lower GPA's but they must pass exams just like the rest of us...and besides, they break the monotony of having all girl students :).

Thank you. :) ----- dianah

true true!

Karma Rene,

Here are some tips for LVN bridge to RN at PCC:

1. Study dosage calculations ! You will have a timed 20 question test on the first day of school and must pass with 90% (means you can only get 2 questions wrong). If you fail the first time, you get to re-take the test in 2 days. Fail the second time and you get kicked out of the program! I know there was one LVN in my class who did not pass both tests - and many of the others failed test #1. It will definitely add stress if you don't pass the first one!

2. Buy the syllabus from the bookstore as soon as it is available (I would even go buy last semester's N52 syllabus if they have any left... RIGHT NOW!!!!!!... because it is basically the same). The current syllabus is supposed to be available 2 weeks before class. Here you will find all the reading required for theory, lab, and seminar topics. You will be required to bring an article from a nursing journal (can get off the internet) related to that weeks topic (be sure the journal was written within 5 years). You will also be required to write an abstract in the APA format and attach it to your article to hand in. I would always find my articles while on break and maybe write my abstracts for the 2nd & 3rd week ahead of time (teachers usually don't require the abstract on week one).

3. First 5 weeks of semester are on psych. There is a book called virtual clinical excursions 'workbook' which includes a CD. I would definitely start this before school starts because it's a lot of work. Be sure to get the assignments out of the syllabus. You must use the info in the CD to answer the questions in the workbook. I think you can find some answers in the corresponding Mental health textbook as well.

4. You will have to write a case study paper in the APA format due around week 10/11?? So when you start working on Med-surg floor on week 6, start thinking about which patient you will choose for your case study. Try to pick a patient ASAP for this study. The less complicated medical history, the better. Make sure to buy the current APA format book (not the old one). You can lose points if you make the most minor APA mistakes! If you start writing your paper early, you can usually submit an early draft to your teacher for corrections before you turn in your final draft - be they are usually pretty strick on doing this about 2 weeks before the final draft is due.

5. I don't know if I can post this here....so I'll be vague....look for a mentorship program on facebook...directly related to this school. Ask about tutoring for the dosage calculation BEFORE school starts!

6. And lastly....Make sure and arrive at the parking lot at least an hour early the first day of class (for that matter...the first few weeks of class), otherwise, you won't find a parking space!! And you do not want to be late for the dosage calculation test!

Good Luck...you're going to do great!

Wow.... So much information to take in!! Thank you SO much, you have NO idea how much I appreciate it. You really dont!! Ill be checking for you so please keep the rest of us updated on when you pass the nclex! Im routing for you!! :nurse:

Oh, and I guess great minds think alike because I already have the syllabus and I even started buying some of the books from old students like the psych and the VCE book.... I also bought a lab diagnostic book.

Oh, and one more question. What sites can I go to for nursing articles???
