Pasadena city college nursing school

U.S.A. California

I was looking at the PCC nursing school brochure and it said that upon acceptance of nursing school, they take the grade point average of the required prerequisite courses only. Does this mean that every other class that I took and received a grade for has no effect on their decision to accept me or not? Thank you very much

Thanks KarmaRene,

Good for you that you are thinking ahead. I know so many students who don't think ahead which can really get them into trouble! Feel free to ask other questions because much of the nursing program went by so fast...it's a blur and I need reminders. It's kinda fun thinking about all those trials and tribulations now that they're over! LOL

Allysa,

I hope that your decision not to apply at PCC is because you think you can't get in! I was told over and over by so many different students that it would take 3 years of applying before you would get in but that was simply not the case! I got in the first time I applied! Same with many of the students in my class - in fact, many students applied at 2-3 other colleges and received acceptance letters for all, then chose PCC. And because everyone who are chosen don't always follow through, there ends up being a lot of students getting in as alternates.

Good Luck!

KarmaRene,

Online there are many websites for Nursing journals like: American Journal of Nursing, AORN journal, Nursing2006, Nursing2007, Nursing2008 and so on. Just search "nursing journals" but keep in mind that you can find many that don't cost anything >>I never had to purchase an article!!

1. Go to PCC website

2. Click "library" at the top

3. Click "proquest" found over on the right side of the page

4. Sign with user name and password (if you don't have this code, you can probably go to the L building and ask someone at registration/counseling/information to find out what it is)

>>>>on this page, you can choose the heading "advanced" to get more specific or continue on same page as follows

5. Enter the subject you are searching - use as few words as possible

6. In date; use drop down box "after this date"; type in 01/01/2006

7. Choose "full text documents only"

8. Click "search"

Most teachers don't care if you print the pdf version (often has pics & uses up a lot of ink) or just the text version. When you hand in your summary/abstract, be sure to have a cover page, abstract page, and reference page in APA format. ASK the teacher on week one what she wants (my LVN friend said that the teacher never explained this to her - teacher assumed everyone knew because it was explained in 1st semester!!). I wouldn't go too far ahead with this because some teachers stop requesting this after you turn in 3 acceptable summaries although they usually require the article each week.

NOTE: Make sure these are NURSING JOURNALS - not general medical / doctor journals!!!!! If the magazine has the name "nursing journal" in it, then you are safe!

On another important note: you will be asked to lead a seminar & choose a topic out of those given. I always liked to think ahead about this because the teacher will schedule these in the first week and the first people who speak up get their choice!! Be ready to choose your topic (maybe one that you're interested in or one that may help you gain knowledge about a future test topic). I would figure out which week that topic would fall on so I wouldn't choose a test week but would pick within the first few weeks so I could get it over with. Many students do a power point presentation. I never did. I would have hand-outs, group activities and try to come up with creative ideas for games (power points can be sooooo boring). You can even play "wheel of fortune / hangman" with words related to your topic and give out prizes for winners. The teacher / students really appreciate a change. Seminar usually 45 minutes long. You will need 2 to 3 articles (depending on your teacher) to back up your seminar topic and must hand them in with an outline of your seminar (ask your teacher or other students about outline example - this was given to us in 1st semester).

Keep in mind....that I am offering tips on how it was in during my semester....things may change slightly but I doubt they will change much because I know it's been that way for years.

Boy, I do go on & on....don't I?? LOL. Anyway, I'm sure this will help! It would have been helpful if someone told me all this stuff - so please....pass it on to the other LVN - Bridge students!;)

And for anyone else reading; these tips apply to first semester too!

You are allowed to go on and on for as long as you like in my book!!! Hahaha, you have all the experience and when I am in that position, I will do my very best to help out others as you have just helped me!! So please feel free to PM me or simply post any additional information that you think would be helpful to me!! I MORE than appreciate it!!!

As for passing it along..... Already sent out a mass email to all my friends about it that are in the same boat as I am as well as gonna pass along to anyone else who asks!! Thanks again.....

Hey, maybe I can even but your books!! LoL. Any of them from 4th semester used in the 3rd?

not ready to sell any books before I pass NCLEX accept for the VCE book which I guess you already have - I'll touch base with you again after I get through graduation - Good Luck!

Lol.

Nah I am not giving up on PCC, but i know my overall GPA is dropping even though i am acing the sciences ( those are the ones that count right?)

I too am going to apply to every ADN program (and CSULB) in a 60 mile radius and hopefully i get in.

BTW what is your stats for getting into PCC?

thanks!

I had a 4.0 in all classes except for that lousy Physiology class I took during winter break....I barely got a B. But like I said, what's important is the 4 core classes. Ace those science classes and you'll be good!

To MOre to Learn,

I also got accepted in the Career Ladder program of PCC. Thanks for the info.

thank you for the information more to learn. thank you.

To More to Learn,

Thank you for the information, it is a big help. I am just wondering if I can buy your syllabus (esp. for role transition if you have one) and books for 3rd and 4th semester. Thank you.

Hello everyone, and congrats to those recently accepted into the career ladder program. The course is pretty easy, alot of information to take in a short time and also trying to get yourself out of the mind-set of an VN. You can do it, just read your book. Its not a fun read by any means, but you will learn somethings. Good luck to you all and I hope to see you and become apart of the "career ladder" clan in the fall!!!
