Scenario: The nurse finds that the o2 sat of the patient with asthma is 78 %,. Which of the following actions should the nurse take first? Apply oxygen or call the physician? Just confused though. Some books says oxygenation must be ordered first by the physician. Just need your ideas about the matter.thanks.

I read that when you're answering the nclex questions your'e assuming the medications/o2 are already ordered and in case of an emergency you aren't going to withhold o2

ABC- airway is first. Give o2 and stabilize your patient then call the doc. NCLEX wants to know what your gonna do for the patient....calling the doc doesnt show what your intervention for the patient is at that time. Be careful on NCLEX of call the doc as an answer they usually want an intervention by YOU the nurse first

While O2 is a drug and needs to be ordered, in many cases it already is ordered for "just in case" on the admitting orders. However, in an emergent situation, you apply O2, stabilize your pt them call the MD.

Think about it... Are you really going to let your patient desat the entire time it takes you to go the nursing station, find the docs number, call or page.. Wait for a call back.. Etc? No. You think of the patient first. Now, if the patient had a need for a drug then yes, you call. Oxygen? No.

You never EVER!! Leave a patient unstable. Apply the O2, stay till the pt stabilizes then call the doc and report the findings and interventions.

Administer Oxygen and then call the doctor

Agree with the above --- O2 before calling the doc.

Also, in real life, depending on what your hospital's resources are... Page the doctor AND respiratory to administer a treatment. In fact, I might even page respiratory first.

On the test you always have a standing order for any medication or treatment that is within the scope of practice for a nurse to administer. Therefore, give the O2.

Definitely give O2 first. In NCLEX land...you contact the physician once you've done all the interventions you can. If the scenario said the patient had asthma, is on O2 and the o2 sat is still at 78% then you would contact the physician. At this point you as the nurse would say this is an emergency and need to call physician.
