Outrageous ER Stories

Hello,

This weekend I was watching a TV show on the Discovery Health Channel and I believe it was Unexplained stories of the E.R. Now, I understand that there will be times (I'm taking prereq's for a Nursing Program) when you'll see things that you never thought you'd see. Anyway, there was this homeless Man that walked into the ER with a mid-calf boot that had completely turned into MAGGOTS! Yes, maggots! My questions to RN's is how often do you come across things like this.

I can stomach a lot of things, but I was grossed out.

My favorite is in our OR there are signs all over the place that say "No Fly Zone" with a picture of a fly. My first day at the hospital we had a tour of the units. When we walked into the OR and I saw the signs posted EVERYWHERE I thought hmmm..do they have fly tape above the OR tables and bug zappers in the corners.."Kelly clamp...zzzzztttt...oh that's just the bug zapper don't pay any attention to it....rib spreader..zzzttt..sutures...zzzzttt"...ahh I love Being a nurse in an inter-city hospital!!!

LOL! I always wondered what happens when a fly does happen to make it's way into an OR.

Those silverfishes are nasty. Ewww. I don't like bugs. I can deal with them but yuck.

Not ER, but still...I use to work at the county jail in the medical department when I first graduated nursing school. Got a call from intake calling medical. Lots of laughter in the background. (Those of you who work around cops know, this should have been my first clue.) Homeless man standing in intake area, cop tells him, go ahead, take off your boots for the nurse. NO LIE about 80 cockroaches scattered:confused: What did they want me to do about it? I smiled sweetly and said, let me go get you all the number for the exterminator, because you know you can take those buddies home on the bottoms of your shoes, right?
