Outrageous Complaints

Published

I swear, sometimes it seems I can not get through a shift without a patient or visitor complaining about something. From pain meds, to food quality to wait times, nurses hear it all! However, this past week, I had a couple strange complaints...

1) Visitor (patient's aunt) was mad that we did not have a blow dryer available to borrow.

2) Patient stated he did not like the way the sun came through his window.

3) Parent did not like that we carried Powerade, wanted staff to "go across street" to buy him Gatorade.

What are some of the stranger (outrageous) complaints you've heard?

We often have patients admitted to psych who are really disappointed in the amenities. These are is the internal responses I give:

I've often thought of coming up with a guide:

You know, give them some information on what to expect, and what not to expect:

Pt asked me to book him a flight home.

Forgot about this one...

"I only really like young, female nurses who aren't overweight."

Honest to Gosh I had a patient say this as a reason why he was being so rude to his nurse.

In our area the Humane Society will go to a patient's home with police to welfare check pets.

I had one that wanted me to inject normal saline into the empty vial, swish it around, and redraw it to make sure that every drop made it into her vein. I'm typically pretty cooperative, but I had to say no and draw a line there.

Circa 2009 I did this routinely, without being asked.

It seemed easier than coping with them breaking into my sharps box and shoving the used vials up their rectum...then the xrays...then the removal of the sharps box...then the Safety Event Report...then all your other patients are mad because their dilaudid is late...

The opioid crisis is real, y'all.

BAHAHHAAH you just had to!!!

And I'm surprised you didn't do any pictures for my post. I saw like, 10 opportunities. But I'm working with a Raspberry Pi computer right now. Small processor. Can't run any photo programs beyond looking at photos :(

Patient was being discharged home, her daughter wanted "6 cans of Coke to go", because they didn't have any at home.

I NEED to add another one to the list.

My unit has over 500 DVDs for kids to choose from. Mom requested the Disney movie Brave. I went to where the movies were kept and the Brave DVD was gone. I informed the mom that another child was watching it or it was missing, and the mother said "Well someone will just need to run down to the store and FETCH us a copy. Surely you have someone with nothing to do. That is my child's favorite movie and nothing else will do". :wideyed:

We can't make this stuff up.

Oh! How sad!

I heard you were positively proactive in that situation, cardiacfreak:
