Out of Work Nurse

Wow, I've been a nurse for nearly twenty years with great experience and am without a job. Recently got married and moved, quit my job because of the travel never thinking I wouldn't get a job right away. Have had several interviews, was told a few times I was "over qualified", what? Have about 100 resumes and applications out there, this economy is getting the best of us. Thanks for listening just wanted to vent.

lol,I was told in my pre nursing days, that I was over qualified to work at Wal-Mart because I had taken a few classes at the college. Business math classes, and some general education. I asked for one dollar over minimum wage, because they had just opened in our area and I heard they were going to help the economy by hiring people at a good wage. I really didn't even have a work history at the time.

What a poor message to send to people, you took a couple college classes and ask for one dollar more so your over qualified to work here. I really am never surprised when I get blank stares from employees there, or they ring me up wrong now. They are getting paid the lowest amount that can legally be paid, and if they try to better themselves with college, they probably get fired for knowing to much.

The problem with health care in this country is not the ACA; it is Congressmen bickering, earning large paychecks and being content with gridlock for everyone else. Meanwhile, many Americans are content with choosing sides and not working toward a compromise. We are a divided country with regards to values. The economy tanked because businessmen got greedy and unethical. Many Americans continue to believe propaganda if only the 'other' party would do this, things would be better. The truth is that members of Congress need to make LESS money and all the CONFLICTS OF INTEREST that occur there need to stop. But maybe I'll see a flying dragon today.

It truly surprises me that people do not see the value in the pre-existing clause in the ACA. Sorry, but if I get sick and change insurances, I don't want to go bankrupt. Why this doesn't bother more people baffles me.

This!! And in addition, why aren't more Americans looking into the insurance & pharmaceutical companies' roles in our healthcare mess? Long ago, before anyone even knew Barack Obama's name, the insurance companies were starting to clamp down on reimbursements through their managed care contracts, all the while posting ginormous profits. And have you ever seen the salaries of those spiffy, energetic drug reps that bring you breakfast, lunch & dinner? Those companies aren't hurting, by any stretch of the imagination.

Sorry to disrupt the thread, OP. I'm just so tired of every misfortune in this country being blamed on, if not the ACA, the President himself.

you have my sympathy. I am afraid this will be a chronic condition with Obamacare - as hospitals have more regulation and less revenue. Should not happen to an experienced nurse for sure!

A more likely scenario is MORE nurses will be needed to take care of all the people who will now be getting health care.

This is bad....why??

Wow, Obamacare managed to shut down a hospital within a month of being passed. I guess it getting the blame for that is better than the many rants here where it's blamed for things that happened in the 1990s.

Another vague, random person/company says it's Obamacare's fault so it must be. Very convincing.

Quit being reasonable, logical, thoughtful and well informed.. You will make heads conservative explode.

I'm still in nursing school so I may not know much but as an adult with bills isn't ALWAYS smart to have another job lined up before you quit? In any field? There are no job guarantees!

I to am trying to find work. I have been off for two years. 20 plus years of experience but an older nurse where do you start. lots of application filled out not return calls???????

Before some get so worked up over ageism... by 36 many many many nurses have 15years experience. experience is simply not that valued by se employers. I have never ever seen a staff nurse position in any specialty ask for more than 5 years experience. Most ask for 2 or more years. At 2 years you are "experienced" and can get paid little more ($1-3) than a new grad, whether you graduated nursing school at 21 or 51.

(I was the first responder wayyy back). YES! However, sometimes one's hand is forced. In my case it was either quit or crash my car falling asleep driving home. A fear I had daily ... I was falling asleep with the radio ON, windows OPEN, and my eyes OPEN. I did a LOT of soul searching when I resigned (I was making $32/hr), and despite still being unemployed after 4 months, I'm still content with my decision. :bored: (although not happy with my current position ... I'm still ALIVE!)

I would say the main problem with healthcare in this country is health insurance. The ACA was supposed to take care of that, but it did not. My wife's insurance has gone up (say what you will about it being people taking sides, but as the person who writes the checks for the insurance every month I can tell you her's has gone up). Thanks to the ACA my wife's no deductible program was cancelled. Apparently it wasn't "fair enough", so now she pays more and went from having zero deductible to a $2,500. Of course this does not mean her total out of pocket costs got any lower either. Yes, the ACA is not all to blame, but it is not helping much. And how is it supposed to when the President keeps giving the very same big businesses you claim are the problem break after break? Individual mandate remains set to go in effect; business mandate . . . nope it will be safely held off until after the next election at least.

As far as the pre-existing clause in the ACA have you actually set down at looked at or tried to get insurance, even with this clause, under pre-existing condition? I have, and I was denied. In fact when I contacted the government to find out why they told me I can still be denied with a pre-existing condition even under the ACA as long as 1) I do not qualify for Medicaid (which I do not) and 2) they have at least tried to "rate" my policy but the rating went above the "allowable amount". I completely understand this is not the way it is supposed to work, but this is the way it is working none the less.

Could you share statistics please, of how, exactly, the ACA is a "train wreck" or even how it is contributing to the "continued demise of healthcare in the US"?

It's odd - I keep asking the same question, yet no one seems to be able to answer with factual information. Even worse, no one bothers to answer at all.

Here is just one fairly recent article from Forbes Magazine about yet another decision by the White House to delay another part of this apparently great bill.

No disrespect meant, but there is plenty of information about the ACA out there on the web. Rather than asking again and again here to try to prove agenda why not seek it out for yourself.
