OSU Grad Entry Program 2020

Published

Hello Everyone!

I am a starting a new thread for those applying for the Grad entry program at OSU this October for 200 entry. I am a super excited yet super nervous, I know the waiting process is tedious. I haven't applied yet, currently finishing up two pre-req courses. I am a Respiratory Therapist pursuing the FNP tract. Super excited for everyone.

I’m excited for you all! I remember the feeling you all have of waiting. It’ll be here before you know it.

@ekontras this is the first time I’m hearing this. Have these NPs applied outside of Ohio?

One friend of mine graduated a few years back and moved out of state, one person I know moved to a small town outside of Toledo, others graduated from the grad entry program this past spring and are still looking. They said most employers want experience as an NP. The graduate entry makes it more difficult without RN experience either. I’m also following a few boards for NPs nationally and in Ohio and cities like Columbus that have NP schools are highly saturated with not enough positions. Many NPs are getting offers for the same salary as an RN.

I’d recommend following Ohio Nurse Practitioner and other groups on Facebook to stay in the know. They discuss day to day, employers, salaries, continuing Ed, job satisfaction, SB 177...

Sorry, HB 177!

If you are so concerned about these issues, can I ask why you are applying to this program? Just want to get the full picture, because I think there are a ton of positives to this program as well!

@ekontras I have heard this for the online, for-profit schools but not (until now) for OSU. I agree that over-saturation is a concern in the NP field in general, but Columbus has so many opportunities for healthcare that I'd like to think there will still be opportunities when we graduate (IF we get in ?)! I also think that it may depend on specialty, but this is speculation. What specialty were your friends who graduated from this program and haven't yet found work? I'm wondering if Cbus is over-saturated in any one specific field. Also, it may be that, as new graduates, we will have to take lower-pay NP jobs and work our way up. This was very much the case for me when I graduated from college--EVERYONE wanted at least some experience so it's a catch-22. We're essentially starting over with our careers and it may be a while before we can have our dream NP job. That being said, the program does allow us to take the NCLEX halfway through, so I'm hoping to work as an RN after that to gain experience. I'm cautiously optimistic that the job market will be good by the time we get out.

And is anyone nervous about job prospects after graduation? I’ve heard from almost every NP that the market is incredibly saturated, especially in Columbus and wages have been driven down significantly. I’ve also heard of job searches taking a year or more and having to move to find something.

It might assuage your doubts to reconsider what genuine "saturation" would look like. Does everyone who needs or wants a provider have a provider, at an affordable price and within a reasonable time frame?

As you go on to note, Ohio House Bill 177's passing would greatly expand the opportunities to match providers with clients, creating a more efficient market and a more favorable job market for a new-grad NP.

Good Afternoon Everyone!

I am apply in August 2020 for Summer 2021! I am so very excited about this opportunity, as it will allow me to become a CNM in 3-4 years rather than 10-12 (ish) years (getting an ASN, 1-2 years to get into L&D as a nurse, 1-2 years of L&D experience/get BSN, and finally MSN program). I have huge dreams, but it all starts here. I am super nervous about admissions because I didn't do too amazing during my undergrad (I was young and just doing it to have a degree) and graduated with a 2.8. I did do pretty well with my graduate degree (3.8), so i am hoping that will help. I called and he said that not having a 3.0 in undergrad won't disqualify me. I have also gotten A's in each of the pre-reqs that I have taken so far (though I am taking pharm this semester).

I look forward to hearing feedback and also connect with other students who are applying this year as well.

Hello ! Welcome to the forum. I share the same interest in the CNM specialty, and appreciate you sharing your story. I am glad you are still choosing to apply, there are a lot more factors that can be evaluated beyond just gpa ( strong personal statement, background, video interview). Right now we are all just sitting waiting for decision this has been the longest wait ever! I recently emailed the nursing department and was informed the projected release is still on schedule for late February. I wish you the best as you apply for next years cohort. Again welcome to the forum !

RRTtoMidwife I really appreciate your feedback! Has anyone heard anything yet? I look forward to hearing how the program goes as well!

Is anyone else anxiously checking their app status literally every day, or is it just me? ?
