ortho evra patch

Published

Has anyone heard much about the ortho evra skin patch being dangerous. I am interested in finding a new birth control and it seems to look good. However, I have heard some bad stuff about. Just wondering what the medical field was saying. Look forward to your feedback.

"after doing some more research today I came across this article online. It has some not so great information regarding legal cases involving this stuff."

one the nurses at the hospitalI work at had just completed her masters when she had a massive stroke and died, everyone thought it was from the stress but others say it was because of birth control med(I don't know which type)

My daughter has tried the patch but every time she puts it on she gets dizzy, nausea and gets a severe head ache (she never has head aches) She wants to use the ring but I don't now that much about it- does it have the same risks of clots as the others?

I switched from the patch to the ring and am very happy with the change! I don't think it would work for everyone to leave it in for 4 weeks to skip your period, though... the levels of hormones taper off. Sometimes by the end of the third week I can tell that my period is going to start soon.

The patch made me sick (dizzy and nauseous) the first week of every cycle. I also had some slight itching at the site. I liked the convienence of only having to think about it once per week vs QD for the pill.

I also used tha patch for about 2 1/2 years, all the way through nursing school and I just took it off this January because we want to try and get pregnant again :). I loved it for the most part. All was fine for the first 5 months then I'd get sick (nausea and vomiting) the day after I put the first week patch on (only for about 6 hours or so). It was so bad that I had to move my patch day so I wasn't getting sick at school (mondays) and instead on my day off (sunday). This went away around a year of use and I only felt quesy but never threw up anymore. I also had irratation at the site d/t the adhesive but it wasn't extreme. I loved to wear mine on my upper back out of site and didn't rub off like it did when I tried to put it on my low back or abd. Compared to the pills this was the best invention in the world. However, after having 1-2 more kids, I think I'll try the nuva ring next. My new obgyn didn;t seem to recommend the patch and drilled my on it when I became her patient, and suggested that after I have another baby that I should consider the nuva ring.

I have heard the bad rap about the patch, and seen many patients who miscarried while on it, but that's probably from incorrect usage. As far as blood clots are concerned I don't smoke so I'm at lower risk and never had a probalem with it. My sister-in-law had those horrible headaches someone else talked about, and her md made her stop taking them, nows she's using the IUD. I don't reccomend any of them in particular since that would be giving medical advice, just find what works best for you and discuss it with your doctor. Good luck.

Another happy nuva ring customer here! Over a year and counting...

I liked the patch while I was using it despite the fact it didnt serve its purpose and I now have a two year old daughter.

I am happy with the patch, and continue to use it. I am horrible about remembering to take a bcp, and after 4 kids, the Nuva ring didn't stay out, if ykwim? Since I have insurance through a Catholic hospital, it doesn't cover the IUD. The patch is the best choice for me, right now. I am not a smoker, so am lower risk for clots anyway, with any birth control. I also like the fact that fertility returns as soon as you stop using it.

I used the patch for a couple of years before we decided to have a baby and I have few complaints about it. It was effective for us. I did have some irritation under the patch, but putting the patch on in a different spot each week helped with this. Increased risk for blood clots associated with the patch might have a little something to do with possibly higher proper usage rate among users...for example, the risk of blood clots is probably lower in a woman that forgets to take her bcp as it should be taken (the same time every day) than it is in a woman who consistently wears her patch each week, week after week.

i used the patch for 6 months and suffered terriablly with violent mood swings and headaches  . i have never suffered the same with the pill. i also know of other people who had the same problems with the patch

I used the patch for 6 months and I liked it, the only reason that I switched methods was my SIL got pregnant on the patch and it made me a little nervous - no wired side effects though. I do know that my OB isn't even prescribing it now- she is waiting for the new study to come out. I was on Depo until about 3 months ago - I liked it, it's nice if you don't want kids for a while and I didn't have a period while I was on it. Good luck with your decision!

I tried the patch once, and it was traumatic. I put in on Sunday night, and by Monday morning, I was dizzy, emotional, and couldn't keep anything down. I had to almost literally crawl across campus to turn in a paper, and sit down every 200 feet or so in order to throw up or dry heave and try to make my head stop spinning. i took it off and stayed in bed for 2 days and waited for it to wear off. I went to the school clinic, and the NP told me that if I wanted, I could try it longer and see if the side effects would wear off, but I couldn't afford to spend so much time with such horrible side effects.

I've seen women with huge square scars due to allergic reactions, and the things can peel off. You also start running out of spaces to put them. Goon concept, bad reality.

I now use the Nuvaring. I menstruated for a month straight when I first tried it, but after the second round, it's perfectly fine. I take it out for sex, as it says that you can take it out for up to 3 hours every day. I love it! I admit I'm a bit paranoid what I go to the bathroom, but my pubic bone seems to do a good job of keeping it in.

Another happy nuvaring customer over here. I love that it's a low dose, and so easy to use. I get side effects from the pill, but have experienced no side effects from the ring.
