Published

Hi future nurses!! I just applied for OHSU's nursing program for fall 2020 as a transfer student. Has anyone else applied yet?

I got accepted (after 3 yrs of trying). I got about one yr of CNA 2 exp, BUT I got over a 1000 hrs worked (lots of overtime). Some other stats: I got a 4.0 pre-req, took college Chemistry, over a few hundred hours of community service. I feel that OHSU looks at applicants more holistically than most other schools, so your story and passion for nursing matters as much as your GPA imo

What is your passion that brought you to nursing, if you are willing to share?

Edit: typo

For those accepted, how many years of healthcare experience did you have at time of application?

Over 2000 hours of healthcare experience. 3.9 GPA with just the required pre-requisites.

I got my start working in a hospital as a housekeeper, then I moved onto being a patient transporter and then a CNA. I always worked around nurses and saw what they did, but it never occurred to me that nursing was something I was capable of doing. I enjoyed helping people and I was always told I'm great with patient interaction, so with my coworker and family's encouragement, I eventually mustered up enough courage to go back to school and start my pre-reqs while working full time to support myself. I basically wrote about how I thought I had the qualification and the personality to make a great nurse, and I wanted a stable, rewarding career.

Stuff I wrote about is really basic honestly. I stayed humble and was genuine. I just obsessively polished my essay to make sure there were no typos or grammar errors. Writing's not my strongest subject LOL. I've been having nightly mini-anxiety attacks thinking my essays weren't good enough and too basic, so I'm very glad I got in and the wait is over.

The silver lining of this Covid epidemic was that we did online essays for Portland campus rather than the usual in-person panel interview... those intimidate me more than anything. So definitely practice your interviewing skills if you are gonna apply in the future.

Thank you for sharing your story!

I didn't get in, and I suspect the extra essays did me in. I fare pretty well on in-person interviews, but didn't put as much time into the second round of essays as I would have liked. It didn't help that they were due during a major holiday, so I was traveling and cooking instead of working on them.

if it helps I spent forever on the essays and I didn't get in either. I don't have the PCE that others on this forum did. I think that's what matters most, essays are a formality after that.

Have any of the Alternates from any of the campuses heard back yet?

Specializes in Healthcare.

Not me. I’m on the list for the Portland campus.

Not me either (Klamath Falls OIT Campus). I just took my essay and HSRT for Klamath Community College also. Not looking good for that campus either since they only take 8....I made the top 20, but I doubt I'll be selected. I am from SC originally and can't believe I have to move back just to complete my education. Back home, they take cohorts 3x a year! This is insane how competitive it is here. No wonder there is a shortage of nurses.

Nothing yet and I’m on the highly likely for Monmouth! They have till June 15 to accept their place!

Thats a lot of cohorts a year. I wish they did that here! I applied at chemeketa and It doesn't look good for me there. My only chance is OHSU.

OIT in Klamath Falls put me on the alternate list, but they don't tell you what the likelihood is of getting in. You simply get an email stating you are on the list...I have no idea how many or what my chances are of getting selected.
