Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) ABSN 2024

Published

Hello everyone!

I haven't seen a post for OHSU's 2024 ABSN program and figured I would start one!

No, but I'm really hoping it's a viable possibility!

Hey guys ? Anyone has more info regarding OHSU's hospital fund offer for Portland's ABSN cohorts?

You should take a look at the 2023 OHSU ABSN Allnurses thread- that's where I have read the most about it.  From what I read there, it is mostly just offered to Portland students. Not sure if it's all or what.  Seems like a good deal (especially because I think the commitment is only 2 years, in contrast to Prov Scholars which is 3 years).

Happy to share the bits I know! I am in the program now. I believe they started offering the hospital fund with the Winter 2023 cohort? I might be off on the exact timing. Last year they offered it to all Portland ABSN students in all three cohorts except for those doing ABSN to dnp programs. It sounds like each year they evaluate the available funding and upcoming hiring needs for the hospital to see if they will continue to offer it. Fingers crossed that it continues to be offered for everyone attending next year!

Wow, thanks. Super useful ? Are you happy in the program and is it mega intense or the course load is manageable?

Yes, I'm definitely happy with the program! The professors and instructors are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive. You can tell that they genuinely want us to succeed and they care about us as people. The other people in my cohort are great as well. It has been wonderful to learn with a group of people with wildly different life experiences and perspectives.

And I would say it is both intense and manageable. They tell you on day one that accelerated does not mean abbreviated and they are not joking. You really can't fall behind on assignments and studying because you'll never really be able to catch up. The first term was a little rough at first. It felt like I was always doing school because I was still figuring out what study strategies were most effective for me. Now that I have my routines in place and don't procrastinate on assignments my stress level is low and I'm happy. ?

I think that the material is very manageable as well. The hardest part was figuring out how to study for application versus memorization - Doing NCLEX style practice questions early on helps hone that skill!

Thank you! That sounds wonderful. Do you happen to know of any single parents in the program? Parents in general?

I was also curious on how often you are on campus vs. online! And how long your days typically are on campus when you're there!

Multiple parents! I can think of 5-6 students off the top of my head with kiddos of various ages. One or two that are single parents, I believe. They are all doing well in the program too. Obviously more complicated for time management than those without children, but they are able to make it work.

It varies a little from term to term, but we are mostly on campus. There are some slight exceptions depending on what cohort you start in since there is one professor who teaches only online, but not every cohort has a class with her so some have a class online and some don't. It's complicated to explain, ha. You can take a look here to see previous schedules. They are generally pretty similar year to year so you can look at Summer 2023 to get an idea of the schedule if you applied for Summer 2024, same for Fall and Winter.

Most classes are in person. Lecture days can be long depending on the term. Roughly 9 AM to 4 PM. Skills lab days are 4 hours (8-12 or 1-5 depending on what group you're assigned to). Clinical days are about 9 hours depending on pre/post conference with your instructor's expectations, until you get to your final term when you work 12 hour shifts with your preceptor. First term is two skills labs days a week to establish foundational skills and then you start in the hospital with clinicals in second term.

CONGRATULATIONS! You deserve it. When date did you submit your interview?

I am also very curious to hear from everyone else, if you have received an admission decision like Cassie for the ABSN ?
