OHSU ABSN/DNP 2023

Published

Hello everyone! This thread is for folks applying to OHSU's ABSN/DNP 2023 program.

Feel free to introduce yourself, ask questions and offer guidance and support to other candidates. Please be respectful and kind and remember that this is a long, exhausting, expensive, stressful journey for lots of people. Let's do our best to uplift and help each other. Good luck!

I received an email saying I was on the alternate list, how do I find out how likely I will be able to get off the list and join the program?

Hey! I applied for the Portland ABSN program (fall cohort) and was put on the alternate list as "highly likely" to be admitted if a spot opens up. I had the same question as you, so I emailed admissions to ask how many people are typically accepted from the waitlist every year to get an idea of my chances. They told me they could not provide any information other than what was in the initial email they sent regarding my placement on the alternate list. It can't hurt to email them just to express your interest and ask any other questions you have, but it sounds like they won't share anything else regarding the alternate list process. I do know they can accept you into any of the cohorts up to the start date, so it is definitely nerve wracking not knowing where you stand or how likely you are to get in! Sorry I don't have much information to share, but I hope this helps a bit!?

Hey guys, my name is Arthur. I'm starting at Ashland's ABSN in June, and definitely looking forward to it. I'm coming from my hometown Seattle. I'm looking forward to living somewhere small and sunny, going on some hikes if there's time. Looking forward to meeting everyone. FYI if anyone is looking for housing in Ashland, Southern Oregon University's Student Housing is available to us, they have studios and 1 beds available for cheap-ish.

Hi Arthur, congratulations on your acceptance. I was wondering how you heard about SOU's student housing being available to OHSU students? I called somebody at OHSU (likely the school of nursing or admissions? I call them so frequently that I end up forgetting who I'm talking to LOL) and they said the SOU housing was NOT available to OHSU students. I'm not saying that what you said is untrue, but rather I'm asking if you had any resources to look into this option. Should I call student life or a similar department at SOU and inquire? Or any other recommendations into pursuing this. Thanks!

also I'm starting in the Summer as well, can't wait to meet everybody else in our cohort!

Specializes in Nurse.

for the ones who already had a interview for OHSU nursing program.
Anyone know for the Kira interview is it writing too? Or just questions? And how many questions are there?

Hey, thanks for reaching out,

his name is Jason Menoza, SOU housing coordinator. It's a bit of a process to get set up but I'm on my way to signing up for housing. His email is [email protected]. Also I contacted V.L. Martinez. We need SOU IDs in addition to our OHSU ones to get the housing, which will be available in a few weeks I heard by email.

When are deposits due for everyone, mines is due by the end of next week.

For anyone else who was put on the alternate list, there is starting to be at least some movement. I was initially waitlisted as "highly likely" and have now been offered a spot in the Portland Winter cohort. Still deciding whether or not to accept, so my spot might become available again depending on what I end up doing. Best of luck to everyone! There's still hope!

Hi!

Wondering if anyone was offered the hospital fund opportunity? I don't know what the requirements were do be offered the fund or if it was sent to everyone, but wondering if anyone has thoughts. Let me know!

The hospital fund opportunity is a two year work agreement with OHSU in exchange for the cost of tuition. There are various requirements you need to agree to, ie obtaining employment within 90 days,  payback terms if you are unable to fulfill 2 year commitment.

I received the offer, but I am unsure of how they decide who receives it or if it is sent to all incoming students. As a former OHSU employee and a resident of Portland (with no plans to relocate) it seems like a fantastic opportunity!

I also received the hospital fund offer, and it wasn't clear if it's being offered to everyone or not. For anyone willing to work at and commute to OHSU for two years, it seems like a great deal. The one thing I noted from the contract is that if you don't complete the requirements, you have to repay tuition plus 25%. I asked OHSU about job availability for being hired in the 90 days after finishing the program, and they said that they currently have almost 200 RN vacancies they're trying to fill and they will be opening the new hospital tower in the next several years. The implication was that they're expecting to have lots of RN job opportunities and getting hired shouldn't be a problem.
