OOPS

I made a BIG oops today. To make a long story short: I have a student that needs to come to the HR every day in the AM to get weighed due to a renal problem( won't go into detail). So sometimes he forgets and I gotta call down to the class room to remind the teacher to send him up. She says " NO" its MSA testing today and he's not allowed to leave the room. I insisted that he needs to come the HR now to get weighed but she still said NO !:banghead::banghead::banghead:

Later I told my boss about it, and she basically said the same thing, that I should NEVER call down during testing. I felt so bad and I apologized like 10 times to that teacher.

I just did not realize how important this test was.

well i think somebody's health is more important than a test. what if somebody would have happened to him. but dont worry about it. you'll be fine.

I know that the testing is important, but apparently the renal monitoring is, as well. Accomodations are made under many circumstances to do with health and well being of the child, so I am not impressed with the "never call down during a test". What if it had been a diabetic that was having an insulin reaction?

I went through the same thing. If certain tests were being given, the kiddos were not allowed to come for meds, even the ones with ADHD. Now, I ask you, why would you NOT want a kid taking a standardized test that reflects on the school to have the medication that will likely help him concentrate and do better on said test? Boggled my mind, but I just documented to CMA and went with it.

could he have been weighed after the testing, or does the order specifically state at a certain time ?

if so, then you had every right to call him to come for the weigh in. will educators ever understand ????? :banghead:

Our standardized tests are this week, too. That time is sacred. I suppose I will never entirely understand it. I made it a point to meet with all the teachers of my diabetic students BEFORE testing started to go over that if the student said they need to go to the nurse, they must go. I have had no problem, the only thing they require is that myself or another adult escort the student.

well the point of him coming down every morning is to get the most accurate weight. i'm supposed to weigh him everyday at the same time. he was heavier than normal but that may have been due to eating/ drinking but i still would of liked him to come in the am instead of noon.

i'm glad he came today because the my supervisor and i noticed that he had some pitting edema and a " moon face" . so we were able to let his parents know.

i just hate that this test is so strict. i mean when i called down, i thought they were going to call the msa police on me. :zzzzz

its like at my job they never send down the students that need to come, and always send down students with minor things. i'll never get them.

We are lost in an educational wilderness. I will say I do have a good relationship with nearly all my teachers, but they really don't understand what we do. It's not like you were trying to do routine vision/hearing screenings. Hang in there...and in the meantime, you always have a listening ear here.:D

If it is a standardized test and we interrupt, it can be considered a mistest and the entire school might have to test again. That is why it is important to have 504's on these kids (especially your diabetics) so they can have testing accomodations.

ETA- It is sacred time to them. Imagine if you were in the middle of your NCLEX and someone busted up in the room demanding to see you right away. That would not fly well. :lol2:

I try to make sure and my teachers do also, that if a child has a health problem that we try to adress every situation before testing starts. If they leave the room then they are not allowed back in. It all goes back to No child left behind and annual yearly progress. I am in a small school and testing can make or break us. I even had an argument with our counselor last year about calling students with the flu and having them come take the tests. I was very opposed, the principal took her side. I did make the studets wear a mask during testing. It wasn't right to expose all the healthy kids, for a stupid test.
