Ontario Second-Entry Nursing

Published

Hi Everyone!

This is super early to talk about applying to nursing school for 2016, but it's always better to be well-prepared! Let's share some thoughts and help each other out!

I am re-applying to nursing schools as I did not get in last year, and planning to enroll to more courses for pre-reqs and to increase my GPA (I graduated with a B.A.)hopefully this year will be much better and with luck!!!!

I have a few universities in mind to apply -

  1. University of Toronto
  2. York
  3. Nipissing
  4. Western
  5. Queen's
  6. McMaster

Should I apply to more? Which one should I apply? I am super eager to enter the program and I failed once, failing twice is not allowed!

Feel Free to give me suggestions or ask questions! Here is a link I found online listing most of the second entry nursing programs.

Best wishes to everyone! Good Luck!

Hi,

I was just wondering what was your gpa? and was the 76.5% for the cGPA or the last year?

Did anyone get accepted in the compressed nursing programs at UofT, Queens or McMaster yet?

Hi Sammie4, Queen's was the only school I applied to and I heard about my acceptance in January. Good luck, hope to see you there!:D

Hi all!

I've been lurking for a while now, but thought I should join in. I've applied to UofT (first choice), Queens, UWO, and York for the second entry programs. I haven't heard anything yet from any of them, but I did apply to Ryerson as a back up program (since it is 4 years). I was accepted to Ryerson about a month ago, but I'm really hoping to hear back from the others soon. The waiting game is brutal.

I'm a 4th year Neuroscience student at Dal, and my cGPA is a 3.46 and my last semesters GPA is a 3.65... I'm a little worried about it, but I'm hoping my supplementary information will help with that.

Does anyone know when York or Toronto will start sending out admissions? I missed the CASPer exam, but rewrote it a week later... I wonder how much that will impact the application.

Thanks all!

Good luck mseco! Neuroscience is awesome, I did it too. Great prep. I'm looking forward to Queen's, but I hope you get your first choice!:) Otherwise, perhaps see you at Queen's :)

does anyone remember if the UofT nursing supplementary application asked for a resume? Thanks!

Also, has anyone gotten an acceptance from UofT yet?

They did not ask for a resume, just the supplementary application questions I believe. I haven't heard of anyone obtaining an acceptance from UofT but they did say early April is when they begin acceptances.

Hey @Meganv! What were your GPA and extracurriculars like?? :)

I currently go to UofT for nursing and I just wanted to hopefully answer some questions. I think UofT gave out acceptances on April 1st last year, but most people got them on April 6th. I got mine at the end of April though. As for GPA from asking my friends everyone had a 3.7 or higher in the last year, but that said I also don't know anyone who had a 3.7 who got rejected (I had two friends who applied but didn't get in but their GPA was lower). The lowest I know of, of the people in my program said she a 78% average but that might be an exception, but then again I also didn't ask a lot of people. I just asked a few friends because one of my friends is applying this year and wanted to know. And lastly, the outlook of jobs in nursing is really not good and there are layoffs and freezing of nursing jobs/replacing RNs with RPNs, so if you weren't sure about nursing, not getting in and finding a different career path isn't bad. Also during clinicals, I have noticed most nurses are from York and Ryerson and Centennial and UOIT or some other school, including our clinical instructors, so if you don't get into Western/McMaster/UofT which I think have higher cutoffs, I don't think it actually affects your job prospects.

Hey @Meganv! What were your GPA and extracurriculars like?? :)

I had a B+ average and my ECs were research, first aid volunteering, administration, volunteering at a children's playroom, I was part of a dance club and taught with them, I played intramurals and I worked in patient transport. I made up for my lower average by having a lot of patient care experience and great references.

Also adding to @peppermintytea ... they do accept 76.5% averages as the minimum as long as you have a great supplemental, it all just depends on the situation. I believe they will take people with lower averages if they have great experiences over someone who has high marks and didn't do anything/ weren't able to show they'd be a great nurse/ want to be a nurse. There were people who got into Western (which has a higher cut off) and didn't get into U of T. So I think it's very situation dependent.

Does anyone know if they penalize applicants for taking 4.0 FCE in a year as opposed to a full course load (5.0 FCE)?

hi everyone, i was just wondering if anybody has any news as to when york will start sending out acceptances this year. i checked back to last years thread and people started getting acceptances since late feb. i know they added in the CASPer test this year so it will take longer. i wonder how much longer we will have to wait. thanks

Did anyone else receive acceptances from Trent....I'm getting so anxious and scared. :(

Yes I received an acceptance about a week after I applied (mid-Feb).
