Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2020

Updated:   Published

Hey, I used to creep these forums for the past few years and they helped affirm my decision to apply to nursing school for Fall 2020. I didn't see one started for next year so I thought, why not start one?

I graduated a while back so I'm a bit older, but my top three choices are:

1. Queen's

2. McMaster

3. York

4. Humber-UNB

Congratulations! I got an offer from trent just now as well!

CONGRATS to all that got offers. Do you mind sharing your GPA

Hey CONGRATS! I got accepted to Queen's too, but I was wondering why you choose Queen's over Trent?

Hey!! While every school is definitely phenomenal and impressive to get into, from research I have done the top rated schools for accelerated nursing are McMaster, UofT, and Queens. To increase my chances of getting a job at a Toronto hospital (where I'm from) I would chose one of these three schools over others. Also, Queens has a stronger clinical rotation program to other schools - you get more exposure to different fields as opposed to other schools. I also love the city of Kingston and I know more people there, so it's a stronger environment for me! But again, EVERY SCHOOL IS GREAT!! This is just based off research I've done and people I've spoken to. HUGE CONGRATS on everyone who has gotten into any school, we will all make amazing nurses no matter where we go!

Does anybody know how many offers Queen's sends out for their first round? Or even the average GPA of people that get in? I'm getting a little worried because I ended up completing my Queen's application pretty close to the deadline, which was after they sent out their first round of acceptances. And I also know apparently they only have like 48 spots in the program.

Hey!! I got in early acceptance and I had a 3.8 on a 4.0 scale. When I called they said it was 3.8 and up GPA that they allowed in first round, and I think they said they send out 10 acceptances each round.

That's very reassuring. I have a higher GPA than that. Hopefully I'll get in next round! CONGRATS on your acceptances!!

Hey all, given the current situation with COVID-19, is anyone considering (I don't know if it can be done) to defer their offer?

I am lucky that I currently have a career right now, but I'm hesitant to give up that stream of income and pay $10,000 for nursing school that will.... likely be online. I know most programs don't start clinical placements until second semester but everything is so up in the air right now.

I’m seriously thinking about that too. *if* I get my acceptance (I only applied uoft) I will try to defer it with the given circumstances.. uoft starts clinicals 3 weeks in, so it will be disadvantageous. But at the same time, I’m re-evaluating my career options with COVID19. I’m worried that in 2 years, the market will be going hiring-freeze. And I have applied other professions that will sustain be at the same level as RN does, financially and career wise.

I definitely thought about it. But I think if anything now is the best time to become a nurse! Health care professionals are honestly the only stable job right now. And I think that in the future it’ll be even harder to get in, because it’s growing in popularity. Now more than ever is when the world needs us!! I think the schools will all work out a plan and a curricula that ensures none of us are at any disadvantage.

Why do you think that the market will go into hiring-freeze?

When do you think we will hear back from UofT about admissions? Has anyone reached out to ask Bloomberg Nursing Admissions?

They said aiming for the first week of April.

So, it can go either north or south. If the government finally sees the importance of NOT cutting the fund for healthcare because of the battle that current HC professionals are having, we will be the only one that will not be affected by this COVID19 aftermath. In fact, nurses will be more competitive and will finally be recognized for what they are doing.

However. We all for sure know that the economy can go south quickly with all these financial problems and who knows when this recession will be done. If the government continues to be a dick and be like “OK COVID19 done, we gotta save the state hence cutting even more funding to make up for the financial loss” then we are ***ed. Remember what happened when Ford cut fundings? People got laid off. My volunteer site (TRI-UC) had an entire neuro floor shut down. Entire floor. This may affect us - through hiring freeze.

As much as I love to be a nurse to change this mofo healthcare policies, I have families to support (I come from broken down low income family).. it is gut-wrenching to compare my compassion to the reality, but hey, we gotta live.
