Ontario Second Entry Nursing Fall 2019

World Canada CA Programs

Updated:   Published

Hello Everyone,

I am currently a third year York University student hoping to apply for second entry nursing at York

only next year (yes I am going through the strike).

Since applications open in November, I thought it would be best to get this forum started. I am hoping to get more insight into the program and I hope current and past nursing students would share their views on the program and how job searching went. Also, what nursing specialties do most York nursing graduates enter as I am hoping to get into public health. Furthermore, share your insights on Humber, McMaster, U of T, Trent, Queens, Western, Ottawa and Nippissing. (I think that is all) and don't forget to include your acceptance GPAs.

If I accept my Mac offer, I’ll lose my spot for York because I accepted York already. Thanks tho

I see! I was missing that piece from the puzzle, so now I understand your situation a bit better. If you're that unsure of your conditions being met for Mac (but york is still good to go), I would just keep York.. This is my very own subjective opinion though, and obviously you're your own person and I may not fully understand the situation! My reasoning is that I would rather go to my second choice (or whatever choice York is for you) than to not go to any school! It's a tough call. You can always contact them later (if you let it expire) and hope for the best. Good luck!

Congratulations to everyone who received offers to the various nursing schools and to those who are waiting, my fingers are crossed for you!

I have a silly question and I'm hoping someone can help me. I received an acceptance letter to UFT. I applied for the second entry nursing program but my letter of acceptance just says BSc of Nursing? Is this correct? Does everyone else have this?

Hey all!

I previously posted about UofT internal applicants who CR/NCR a course. I called the registrar and previously wrote that if you have 4.0 credits or less, the CR/NCR mark will be used in the average. However, I think I misinterpreted this as a generalization rather than something that was specific to my own situation. I am not sure what the exact number of credits you need for it to count (but for my situation since it was less than 4CR it counts). If any internal applicants has any question about CR/NCR I strongly suggest you call the UofT registrar as she has the correct information.

Sorry about that!

Congratulations on your acceptance! I'm still waiting for mine from UofT so fingers crossed! Would you mind sharing your GPA and extracurriculars? ?

Hey I am sorry for the late response ! I have been cramming for my last exam. I believe my gpa was around 3.95 on a 4.0 scale. Honestly I have very average extra curricular! I volunteered (mostly tutoring) with children of immigrant families and children with learning disabilities. I also did a summer of Histology work for a research lab. I think my supplementary essay helped me a lot because I talked a lot about compassion and empathy. Also talked about how I picked myself up and worked hard to turn my life around after experiencing trauma in my life. I had 3 references ( two profs and one volunteer coordinator). Hope that helps!

Opinions about the nursing program at York vs. McMaster?

Hey everyone! Current UofT student here!

To everyone who has already gotten in, CONGRATS. To everyone still waiting to get in, try not to worry! I did not get accepted to UofT until the end of May and I know that there are people in the program who did not get accepted until July/ August. From what I remember, no rejections were sent out until the end of the summer. So if you haven’t heard back yet there is still hope!

As some of you are now deciding where to go, I wanted to give my perspective on why I chose UofT and what I have heard about other schools. I applied to Mac, uoft, western, queens and Trent. I really was only considering Mac and UofT, the other 3 schools were backups. I haven’t heard anything about Queens or Western. One of them has difficulty finding placements because there are not a lot of hospitals near one of the schools but I don’t know which one. Trent I have heard is good but they move slowly since it is a 3 year program. Even though I did not apply to York, one of my clinical instructors was also a CI for the York program and when comparing the UofT students to the York students, she mentioned that we were more prepared and confident (but that also could just depend on the students she had in her group).

Deciding between Mac and Uoft was really hard for me because I had heard such good things about both programs. I ultimately decided on UofT because I believed that how their clinical was set up, better suited my needs. UofT starts clinical right way in September and we have 6-7 weeks in each rotation. As others are mentioned, you are guaranteed a rotation in geriatrics, maternity, peds, mental health and medsurg. I liked that we 100% got a chance to experience each of those 5 types of nursing. A negative is that 6-7 weeks isn’t that much time. I found that by week 4/5 I was starting to feel comfortable there and then we would switch soon after. Uoft gets your address at the beginning of the year (you can update it if your address changes), and placements get selected based on your address. (I have not had to commute longer than 30 minutes for any of my hospitals).

I know people at McMaster and they start placement in January but start with 12 week placements (in the summer semester I believe they are shorter). But the increased length at your placement allows you to become more comfortable in that area of nursing. The hospitals in Hamilton are great, however, my friend got placed in hospitals in St. Catherines, a 1 hour drive away. You also are not guaranteed a specific type of placement. Some people don’t get maternity or pediatrics at all. Sick kids hospital is also considered a “special placement” where only a handful of students get placed there, compared to 50% of uoft students being placed there.

I spoke to someone who hires nurses at one of the major toronto hospitals when I was making my decision and she mentioned that there is no wrong choice. Go to whatever school best suits your personal needs and as long as you are a great nurse, you will be hired.

(Also im 100% biased, but look at the number of UofT students coming back on this forum to answer questions compared to the other schools ;) ) feel free to ask additional questions!!

Thank you so much for your feedback!! This kinda puts me at ease!!

Hey guys! How do you know if you were given an offer for mac? Would it just show up on your mosaic account under "check application status"?

Yes, and an email was sent out a few days after it updated on mosaic.

Does anyone know if there is a Queens Facebook group yet? or anyone here planning on going ?
