UTMB Spring 2018

Nursing Students School Programs

Hello everyone! I plan on applying to UTMB for Spring 2018 entry and can't find a post on it, so I decided to make one! I am taking my TEAS end of April. I already have a degree from the University of Houston in Health Communication and minor in Nutrition. I am finishing my last two prerequisites (A&P2, Microbiology) right now at a community college. Anyone else looking to apply? Deadline is coming up next month, so I thought it would be awesome to get a group thread going! Would love to hear from others applying!

Brandon, Sometimes a really strong personal statement can help. There are services that will help you with writing your personal statement. I was told writing it like a narrative would help make it stick out. Have you considered hiring someone to help write your personal statement?

Had no idea that was available, but I guess it would be similar to professional resume writers. I will say I totally changed my statement for the second time thinking I needed to do something different. Any suggestions where to look for such services?

Hi Ya'll. Does anyone know if science prereqs have a time limit? I'm just beginning to explore other programs and recently learned UTHSCSA does not require these prereqs to be taken within 5 years (most schools require microbio and A&P to be taken within 5 years). I'm currently enrolled at Austin Community College to retake these courses but would not be done for another year. Any help is appreciated!

I just sent you a private message.

Last thing i remember from attending the open house, they said that there were no expiration for science courses

thanks for your response and feedback :)

Hi guys! I've also applied for Spring 2018.

For those waiting for this semester's courses to be completed to apply, they suggested at the open house I attended to go ahead and apply now to get your application in. Your transcripts will show your in progress classes and as long as they are completed by the due date of 5/31, they will accept your application. You just have your school send transcripts directly to UTMB as soon as final grades are posted from this semester. It was highly suggested to get your application in asap.

I've been reading these threads for what seems like so long now, it's exciting that it's finally our time to apply! :-)

Brandon_Hare - Have you looked into the fresh start program? That's what I did and it dropped all my grades from over 10 years ago. Of course, you have to retake those courses if they are needed for prereqs, but I'm glad I did that. I think it will help me be more prepared for the nursing education. Although overal 3.4 is not bad. Mine would have been like 3.12 if I hadn't chosen the fresh start.

I haven't started on my personal statement yet. I'll probably apply within the next week. I wanted to wait until my final grades for this semester was posted so it'll raise my GPA. But since you are saying it is better to apply now then I guess I will! Any help on what you guys are putting on your personal statement?

I kept it brief using the guidelines that utmb shows on their website. I was told you can go over the 700 word mark but I wouldn't want who is reading it to think that it drags. I didn't talk about my childhood or anything bland like some do, make it stick out and REREAD IT, REAREAD IT, then let others read it and fix any gramatical errors. I wrote my paper in about a month time frame and let others read it and fix it before ultimately revising parts of it. Take some time away from the paper before submitting it and REREAD IT once again to make sure it makes sense and answers the guidelines given. Have fun :)

I wrote mine as a narrative. I told why I had gaps in my learning (military moves, divorce, cancer, etc) which also explained a few lower grades. I talked about the incidents that pushed me toward nursing since this will be a second career for me (family tragedy). I also discussed being a lifelong learner and that even though I have multiple graduate degrees learning doesn't stop for me ever and I feel there is always more for me to learn.

That's a good personal statement!! I've always wanted to be a nurse, and after losing my uncle to Cancer. It made me realize that I want to be a Pediatric Oncology nurse. So I'm hoping that I can get into UTMB!!

Hi all! I am also in the process of applying to UTMB. I am very excited/nervous, but I am mostly excited to finally be applying. I have already taken the TEAS. I scored an 80% and was "Advanced" according to the results. Im not 100% on my GPA since I have been to 3 community colleges, but currently I have an overall 3.4 and science 3.6. I am almost done with my personal statement, I just need to get it revised. Good luck to everyone!
