hey guys,

has anyone heard of university of cincinnati online anp practitioner program or frontier nursing online. Is it possible to get in with a 2.67 undergraduate bsn gpa and a 3.7 gpa in my mba program. I have 3 more classes in my mba to graduate. what are my chances of getting in. If you know any more adavanced nursing programs online that I might have a chance to get in? Give me feedback please.

I was told by ISU's denial letter that my references were not *strong* enough. Or, perhaps my professional goals were not in line with what they want to see. It's frustrating because in this economy, we don't have a lot of extra money floating around to be paying admission fees, background checks, etc., for schools that ultimately don't choose you.

Makes you want to write your own d*** reference letters with glowing recommendations and have your friends sign them, don't you think? lol.

This school didn't even ask my goals. The only essay they wanted was my definition of what nursing is to me and no more than 150 words. They called me back and left a voicemail when I took him up on his offer to discuss their decision in his letter. Tried back today and got another voicemail. I want to ask him what their age range is for acceptance. The school I haven't heard from yet did want an essay with specific points made. Gave them what they wanted. They too asked birthdate, so we shall see. Barinbass.

I applied with SLU (st louis Mo) over the phone and wa accepted on the spot. Of course I had to do all the official paperwork but they were really user friendly.

Wow! That's awesome. I am going to look into their program, as well. It seems there are a number of obscure post-master's programs that are not found by Google search and do not show up on allnursingschools.com.

Thanks for your information!:yeah:

I got another call from UCCS and spoke with the one who sent my denial letter. It seems according to him that they had 50 applicants for 25 places and therfore placed a heavier weight on GPA than on the other areas. My BSN undergrad GPA was 3.69, but he said they figured it differently. Then spok to the representative who did the actual totaling and who was the one I conversed with through the application process. She explained that they take all undergrad course work, total the points and credit hours, and divid one by the other. I am in my 50's, and some of my college courses are very old and have nothing to do with nursing. They totaled it all up anyway, and based on that, my GPA didn't meet their standard. I just hope that the one school I have remaining out there uses essay and references as what they weigh heavier and that they look at my GPA's from my Associate and my BSN instead of the complete cumulative since high school.

ALso, i called St Louis Univ and she called me back. i had gotten her in a meeting. She was very nice. She told me that schools will no longer offer plain Adult NP and will go to a combo Adult/Gero. You can treat from age 15 to death, same as the current ANP. That would suit me fine. Not accepting until Fall 2011, however, and the program is 2.5 years! Longer than I wanted. Told me the Plan of Studty was on the website when I asked for one to one emailed to me. Sd that of all the Plans of Study they send out, only a very few apply. Also a few courses are taught more than once a year. My present school only offers courses once a year. Get out of sinc and you have to wait an entire year to pick it back up. Really a bit old school. Barinbass

UC sent me an e-mail today saying that they have received an overwhelming response for their FNP program and that they need to close admission until 2012 :( I am getting nervous about the demand for FNP programs and the number of nurses entering this field. Wondering if it will be too competetive for me to get into any program, and worse, wondering if I do become a FNP if the market will be flooded by then...

wondering if I should consider adult or acute care instead, doesn't seem as though they are in as high of a demand.

I have college transcripts 25 years old, in liberal arts courses, that my grad school counted into my GPA for admission purposes. Seems silly, since I don't think it is a very good indicator of what level of scholarship they can expect from me now, but it's their school, I guess they can do what they want, lol. I've always had good grades and they took me, lol, but using that criteria is odd IMO. If I were running a grad school, I'd insist on in person interviews and make 80% of my decision based on that instead of a portfolio without a face.

25 YEAR transcripts and they were counted in!!! Wow! Well the good news is you made good grades then. Can you imagine if they were bad grades!

I'm in UC's psych NP program. I think acute care and family NP are closed until 2012. The good thing is that you only take 2 classes at a time for the first year and IMO it could be done when working FT. I have an unsupportive spouse and a special needs child, so I work part-time. The hard part about UC is that you are TOTALLY on your own finding a preceptor. They have affiliations with hospitals in the midwest, but those spaces are given to ground-based students. Online you have to find your own. And it is very difficult, you think your employer that already does med students (with an empty NP position posted for 3 YEARS) would do it, no. Then you try ex-employers who do med students. NO. Then begin the cold calls. It's really kind of scary, I haven't found one yet. Before you consider online, I would have a serious discussion with your supervising physician, hospital education department, or NP friends before getting involved. Make SURE you can do your preceptorship somewhere (and UC's are about 9 months long, 3 quarters with 15-18 hours per week).

Before my enrollment, my "advisor" promised me that the school would help me find placement, "none" of their other students have problems, they do all the paperwork....LIES. It is like trying to find a job when there are none...and to top it off, UC is not a school that pays the preceptor.

I just applied to both UCin and SLU's online programs. The apps are complete so I'm just sitting around working and waiting to see what the response will be. It's okay if I don't get picked up because when I applied I had no job and was a new grad. Made good grades though. So if not this year, then next year! UCin is accepting apps for summer 2012 according to what my admission advisor told me. In the meantime, I work public health! Cheers! Hope everyone goes where they want! I've wanted to be a FNP for so long, I will just keep applying until my foot goes in that door. :heartbeat
