new NP cant find a job

This is a real problem, and I share your frustration. I volunteered for a while and can at least list it on my resume. I had heard of this company, and they got back in touch today. Although it is not exactly what you went to school to do, it will give you experience, and they seem to take new grads provided there is a location near you. Life Line Community Healthcare You also can do the annual physicals on Medicare physicals/visits as those are all over and they are not picky about experience. It took me a very long time, and I still have not found work letting me do what I was trained for, I am strongly considering leaving my state of NC as it is so Restricted and with no work, why stay here? I cannot wait longer as my saving are nearly gone. By the way, the same is happening with RNs here too. One went to New Hampshire to get experience. NC surely doesn't mind churning out RNs and NPs, but heaven help them if they will hire us. Docs seem to think we need to be trained, and an NP cannot breathe without an doc in NC? Give me a break! I am so ready to leave this state!

new NP cant find a job

I never did hear from that last interview one way or the other but I have had three interviews with the company coming into my area that I think does very good things. It is exciting and innovative and has tons of merit for the patient as well as for health care. I also did the work to get two interviews last week and both are interested. One called and offered the part time position in his practice that I liked. Now the dilemma is that there is one more interview to go with the innovative company, and I have mad it through the Chief Medical Officer. It is scheduled for next week, but the doc who offered the part time job in his practice texted me tonight saying that he has two other candidates scheduled for this week and he needs an answer by the end of the week. That runs into that last interview which I told him about and said I'd like to finish that out and was very pleased with his practice and was very interested in working with hm., Any thoughts on how to handle the two since I want to make the best decision for me, and they are very different. I still would do NP duties in both. Thanks

new NP cant find a job

HI, I thought I'd be writing you telling you I had a job offer, but that is Not the case. I called back one of those that never said yes or no and rather than go to the CEO, I went to the manager. I had phone interviewed with her and she had wanted to have a face to face but HR dropped the ball and didn't set up the appt. She decided to set it up herself and the appt was today. i drove 70 miles one way for this appt. Interviewed by the office manager, doc, LCSW, RN, and a new, two week FNP. Surprised she was part of the interview team. The manager had told me they needed staff and were tight, so I felt good. The interview went pretty well but the very young doc gave me the distinct impression that she felt I would not appreciate the patients like she does because they are all medicaid or no insurance and the manager told her I had gone on house calls with my father which did do. I should never have mentioned that but before others got in, the manager started that tell me about yourself stuff. I felt like her comments were discriminatory in a way, but thee felt like there was some culture stuff in that meeting. Anyway, I got an email on the way home that said they were gong to interview more candidates in the next few weeks to get the best fit and thanked me for coming over to interview. That sounded like a brushoff to me. I have no other options and have this stupid education I cannot use!! I am at a total loss. After getting my BSN I made a choice to go this route instead of Medical School. I obviously made the wrong choice!

BostonRN13, I sent you a PM but your box is now full. I contacted the site I phone interviewed with before this last one and spoke to the CEO again. He made some calls and wrote today that he is going to set up a face to face interview. I am not really hopeful as he said this before too. I also heard this morning from the one I last interviewed with in the earlier posts. The NP who was to leave and get married is not getting married until next year, so the position went poof! The doc said he'd like to be able to contact me if things change. I have had good interviews with the docs. I also wrote up my proposal and sent it to my state Representative. She asked for that after I called her.

Interview at a nursing home next week

Reddgirl, What is your job description for the NH position? I have seen ads for positions that station a NP in the NH, but I am not sure what the work entails. From what I have read, it seems like it can include starting IV fluids if needed, etc which to me is Acute Care. Also, some positions send the NP to the NH to do assessments only, and they pay per visit. What is your job description for the position you are considering?

Hi and thanks for sharing that. BostonRN13, I did get your PM. Thanks. Congrats on getting the offer!! The fact that you had a baby during that year makes your year well spent and you needed the time. I got a coach and made a Linked In page that is specific to what I really want to do. I have interviewed the Directors of those Divisions here in my area and have opened communication with two in other states. Here, they have no openings and no funding either. I joined the organization associated with my area of choice which opened other doors and brought visitors to my LI page. I got out my notebook with the practices I called when looking for clinical sites. One is looking for a PA, and I sent a CV yesterday. I also spoke to the one in my Representative's office I mentioned re policy and the hiring of new grads for positions in HRSA approved locations. She said she would present it. Trying to stay busy. Thanks for your support.

new NP cant find a job

Thank you zmansc. I will email once a week to check the status, but I am applying for other positions too. It is frustrating, and I am restless and afraid too. I plan to get out my Fitzgerald CDs and listen to them with the notebook to stay current. I heard tonight that in Health Services there is a question regarding reimbursement and that this may lead to cut backs. Have any of you heard this? Thanks

new NP cant find a job

Thanks zmansc. I had to buy the same book and looked over the contracts section. I will do it more thoroughly when/if that time comes. My prof said that contracts usually mentions details regarding leaving the practice such as proprietary data, not taking patients with you, and not practicing within a certain mileage of the office, etc. Congratulations reddgirl on getting that position. I mentioned earlier that I emailed the doc too, and he responded Monday. He said that he was still interviewing, but he was still very interested in me and would be in touch soon. That was this past Monday. I really don't know what to think, but am still applying for jobs. I also contacted my state senator about the new grads and federally funded clinics, etc, and she loved the idea. She referred me to one in my state who is more involved in policy. I will contact her tomorrow. I hope things change soon.

new NP cant find a job

Hi. I couldn't stand not knowing, so I called the office today and asked to speak with the office manager. I also sent an email to the doc asking the status of the position. The office manager told me that the doc had told hm to send me a sample contract, but he said he needed to clean it up some first. It could be that everyone they are interested in gets this sample, and if they do not agree, they do not get the job. I have never had to sign a contact before, so I have no idea. It sounds more positive but still until it arrives via email which he said it would and I read it etc, it is still a guess. I did contact one of my profs from school, and she told me what types of thing may be in one and added that she always gets an atty to look over the contracts before she signs them. Anyway I feel a bit better and more hopeful but still in a holding pattern. Wanted to give you this update. Thanks for your support.

new NP cant find a job

Hi and thanks so much! I wasn't sure what you meant by "the offer they produce" unless it means the salary they offer. I have been told by one of my former NP preceptors that since the doc said to start that my patient load would be one per hour for me not to expect much. I can understand that for sure! She also suggested that I ask if the offer can be renegotiated once my load picks up. Congrats to you on getting your first job in the community Center and good wishes on this new one too!! Because his practice is not listed as one of those that can be used for loan repayment by working, I talked to one at HRSA who said the doc can apply for that status. If he is agreeable to that and if approved, then I may be able to use that site. There was one approved practice in that area before, but it is now not listed so there is none. Seems like there would be too. Course that will be down the road a bit as getting the job and and learning this new role etc are first. If he agrees to it. it would be a marketing tool for additional staff if needed. If I don't pay back my loans, they will take it from my Social Security when that time comes. That is a scary thought. I hope you are right re jobs once over the new grad hump as I am an older new grad, birthday is next week, and my age is on the Net! Can't worry about that though. Thanks again for all the supportive comments.

new NP cant find a job

Thanks both of you! During the interview, he did mention coming back over to meet the other NPs which makes me concerned that he would ask their opinion or leave the final approval up to them no matter if he liked me for his practice. From my experience, when that happens, personalities get involved and objectivity is not the prominent factor. One of the NPs suggested that he run the ad where I read about the position. I will give him until Monday and contact the office. Thanks a bunch!

new NP cant find a job

Well, I am pretty sure he said he'd send a contract by Thursday, but it is now Friday and I haven't heard anything. I know it is a holiday, but he does this via email and probably will use the same contact that he used with his other NPs. Just losing all hope of finding work!

new NP cant find a job

I wouldn't do that as I am not assured at all that taking that route will guarantee me a job afterward. Plus, I am NOT an FNP!! If those programs are for FNPs only, then that would not be a route open to me. I still think it would be a great idea to make it mandatory that those clinics that receive the grant money as part of the ACA have to take new grads. I can write the RN in my area who I used as my contact for a paper I had to write in my Advocacy/Health Policy class. She may know how to get it done. UPDATE: Now, I found an ad last Tuesday for a position in Internal Medicine and in less than 10 minutes after submitting my CV, the doctor responded and I had an appointment for an interview. The interview was today! The ad said he wanted to hire two and he wanted me to come this afternoon. In the interview, he said he wanted someone who treated patients well. I took that to mean good customer service. Hmmm. He also said he thought I was the one he was looking for, but didn't want to cancel the other two interviews he has this week and would go through their interviews. We shall see. He said he would send a contract by Thursday, three days from now, but he never mentioned salary!!!! I get the feeling it may be low as he told me all of the benefits but never mentioned salary. Maybe he has to get with the office manager first. Also, GET THIS!! He prefers a new grad!!!!! Hooray!!!! Granted we may be cheaper in his mind, but he also said that he liked to mould us into our role without the preconceptions one who has worked as an NP may come with. Sounds like a sort of internship! This is great for me, and the patient load is very light at first. This sounds perfect, although I would have to take call every 6 weeks. At least it may be a start. He has 3-4 NPs and two locations. He even showed me where my office might be!!! I am not sure just what to believe. This doc is in his 40's. Exciting but scary too. I want to make the right decision. Just had to share this. I will let you know how it turns out.

new NP cant find a job

I am still having a problem getting hired as a new grad and am now frustrated and a little depressed. I am aware of the $300 million available in grants for expansion of community clinics or to start them which is part of the ACA through HRSA. I really do think that if these funds are used to expand clinics for the purpose of making care available for those who do not have access that they should have to be wiling to hire a new gad NP!! By doing that, the trained, ready, and qualified providers are able to provide care and we can use that experience to pay back student loans. This would help accomplish the original purpose of having NPs in the first place and also help to accomplish the goals of the ACA. If there was a way to propose this to those providing or writing the grants, maybe that would help us newbies get hired and into the workforce which helps everybody!! If I had the email addy of the new Director of the HHS, Burwell, I'd email and present my request that those receiving the grants have to take new grads. I know I posted this grant info already but it is an avenue to strongly consider. How can we make this happen? I need to go to work!!

    Passed Adult AANP Certification Exam

I know you are in shock and very disappointed, but I registered for both exams so in case I failed the first, I had one to go and could take it soon. I don't know which track you took, but one of my classmates failed both the ANCC and AANP AG exams the first time around. She then took one again and passed it. You will too! Get registered and continue forward! I didn't see a course for Adult on the site mentioned above. Treat yourself well tonight!

new NP cant find a job

They hired their own grads. Seems like they might to do that. Networking is easy in that case too. I have had contact with them and also have reached out face to face with the director of the area of my interest. As of now, they do not have the funds to hire or so they said, but in that specialty, I doubt the new grad issue will be important if the funds were there. However if there are two and one has experience and the other doesn't, which do you think they old choose? As I mentioned earlier, FNPs are more in demand than ANP, and I am not looking for research at all since that is not doing ADPIE, the components of being an NP. I have done research, and they need a BSN. MSN looks nice in the results section and may lend credibility, but it isn't necessary. Research will not provide the NP experience either. No diagnosing, making the plan, providing treatment, etc etc. Thanks though. If you are familiar with Lincoln, the large group of community centers, Duke HR manages all Lincoln's HR needs. I have applied there too, but I will not hear anything. If you have other helpful suggestons that may have a positive outcome, please post. Thanks
