Hello:
I am in northern Minnesota and work in long term care. I am looking for an online RN to BSN degree program that DOESN'T require clinicals for completion. Anyone seen such an animal?
thanks

Yes, there are lots of them. University of Phoenix is probably one of the most well-known ones. If you go to the "online/distance learning" forum, you will probably find a lot of threads on the subject.

Hi and welcome to allnurses! I completed the University of Phoenix ADN to BSN in May 04. There ARE clinicals - however, not like nursing school. In the entire program there are 110 hours required. However, YOU arrange them - and they are very easy to get arranged...you meet with a family YOU select for example for your family nursing. For community nursing, I rode along with our crisis team for a couple of shifts. For mental health nursing, I interviewed (via phone) a couple of people. Easy and simple. I don't know of any online program that doesn't require clinicals but UofP is certainly doable. Good luck...judi

Are there actually nursing degree programs that don't require clinicals?
No. For the RN-BSN programs that require no/minimal clinicals, you must already have an RN and have been working as an RN for a certain amount of time. THe assumption is that you would have gotten your clinical time in when you were getting your ADN.
Hey that sounds great! I probably have enough experience in since my graduation from ADN in 1994 to fulfill clinical requirement for some schools. I actually found a school that required no clinicals with enough experience and lost the URL some two years ago sadly. So far in searching there are always clinicals or a competency clinical evaluation of some kind (like Regents). I will keep looking
Thanks for the feedback

Oh, but UoP DOES require clinicals. I teach the on-line Community Health Nursing for them and I have clinical requirements for the second portion of the class. The students set up their own clinicals, according to the school's requirements, and submit the proposal to me for approval. The site(s) must be specific to Community Health Nursing, they must have a signed permission from the Nurse(s) who are precepting them and must complete weekly logs in addition to their class work and paper requirements. :)
Thank you for clarifying that! Sorry I misspoke.

The post you referenced was addressing a poster who seemed to interpret the discussion to mean that there programs for 1st time RNs that did not require clinicals, which there are not. There are online RN programs, but they require compentency evaluations.

i'm just curious why you would not want clinicals??? Just think about how much you will learn from them! Honestly, if I met a nurse (or student nurse) who never did clinicals...i'd be very weary!!
The program that I will be attending puts much focus on clinicals.
I hope this post doesnt get taken the wrong way, but i just dont see why you wouldnt want the valuable opportunity and learning experience?

Weary or leery? :)
Once you're in the field and working, life gets in the way and it's hard to schedule time for traditional schooling. That's why online degree programs appeal to so many people.
Nobody here is saying that it's right or okay or desirable to have a nursing degree without any clinical experience. However, for many people, the clinical experience they received in their ADN program, plus the clinical experience they receive while actually out in the workforce, working as an RN, is sufficient.
As far as I know, there *aren't* any nurses out there who didn't have any clinical experience. There aren't any nursing programs that offer an RN without a minimum amount of clinical experience, thank goodness.
What we're talking about is an RN to BSN program, where the person would have already completed extensive clinical hours already.
