One Week into Nursing school & I'm going nuts already!!!

Published

Hey all

I just started the Nursing program at BC and its tough. There is so much work that needs to be done in such a short period of time. I am startin to feel like I cant do it. I know this is just the first week and I am probably in for more but i just needed to vent as well as some words of encouragement. I know its not impossible but...I feel very overwhelmed!!

I know at my school they kinda use the first semester to weed out people. They make it hard to make sure you can handle being a nurse. After that first semester, it has just seemed to fly by. You will make it. and You will feel accomplished when you do! =)

I was in your shoes just last semester. Right now I am in GI/GU at North campus. Just want to let you know that you can do it! At the beginning it does seem overwhelming, but once you get organized, you'll see that it is not so bad. Are you also taking pharmacology? I was fortunate enough to have taken that class a semester prior. Try your best to read the material and maybe answering the objectives before class. That's the #1 tip I can give. Are you at the North campus?

Well, good luck and hang in there! Don't let negative people tell you that it is impossible and that the instructors are "out to get you" :)

Definitely, the first semester of nursing school brought with it a lot of work, but stay focused, take baby steps and keep the deadlines in mind because they can sneak up on you. Good luck.

In the words of Winston Churchill, 'Never give up, never give up'. The best thing that I can tell you is:

1. Say daily positive affirmations

2. Carve out some private 'me time' for yourself once a week

2. Set mini goals for yourself and when you achieve them reward yourself i.e buy lunch that day, get a pedicure and study while your back is being massaged by the chair, get a manicure etc

4. Seg goals, set goals, set goals.

5. Find a quiet place to study if you can't do it at home

6. Surround yourself with positive people

and remember u can do it.

Stay positive. Thats what my husband always tells me when I doubt myself. I don't know which campus you are at, but North campus has a NP1/NP2 tutor. If you're not at north, check your campus LRC and see if they have one. If you're struggling, go see them. I would also get involved with a study group. You can do this. Its a very rigorous course, so its going to go fast and be a lot of info at once. Just breathe deep, and take one day at a time. Read whenever you can. Go over the info and think each question through when taking your tests. Don't rush.

Good luck. Keep us posted on your progress. I heard first semester was the hardest. Don't know how true it is. I'm going to be applying for the Aug or Jan '10 class at north. Can't wait!!

Everyone feels this way the first semester. Soon, you'll find what works for you. Be sure you know everything that Brickman says in lecture, read the Fundamentals and Skills books. Be sure you understand the concepts and rationals. Don't simply memorize info. Complete the test taking skills computer tutorial in the lab. See a tutor if you need help, study tips, or just words of encouragement.

my biggest advice to you, outside of at least trying to read the chapter summary before the class, is to BUY A CALENDAR!!! It will definitely help you to stay organized. I agree with the previous posts, YOu can definitely do it. We all felt overwhelmed in the beginning.

Good LUck to you

Put one foot in front of the other and remember you're human and can only do one thing at a time. Take care of yourself.

We all feel overwhelmed that first week. When you're that busy time flies and soon you'll be done!

So how are things at Broward College now that the first and second weeks are over?

Thank you everyone for your encouraging words. I have definitely calmed down a little. I am just taking everyday one at a time. My first test is Friday and I am pretty nervous. I have been reading and studying since day one. If anyone has any advice on how to prepare for an exam that would be really helpful.

Thanks

Sorry, I don't have any advice for taking the nursing tests, but if you're at the north campus, you can see the tutor there. I'm not sure if Central or South have them, but you can check at the LRC and find out. I would meet with them and ask them what to expect and for advice on how to prepare. Good luck on your first test!
