Olivet Nazarene FNP

Published

Hi! I'm looking at FNP programs. What have you heard about Olivet Nazarene University? I've heard great things so far. The only thing I'm a little worried about is the curriculum; it looks like there aren't as many core FNP classes as there are in other programs. Has anyone gone through their FNP program? Have any insight? Thanks!

For those with Olivet FNP program, do they have like skills lab for the advance health assessment? I am comparing them with other colleges and some of them says they do have labs. I think this will be important to get the skills we need for the program. I am looking at the 8/22 start should I go through with my application.

No they don't require onsite visits at ONU. From what I was told you do a recorded assessment. Everything thus far with ONU has been great. I know 2 people currently in the program and both say they are happy with their choice to go there. I am excited to start in Aug!

ClayH, thanks for the response. I'm thankful to the one who posted re: ANA discount. They do give out 20% off tuition. I am looking at starting this August as well. I will get my confirmation on Monday. We might be classmates! :D

Yeah the ANA discount is well worth it! :) That's so awesome. I'm glad to hear you're moving along in the process. Feel free to Private Message me and we can get in contact. Working together is much needed for online programs!

Can anyone tell me how fast paced this program is at ONU? I am working full time and now having second thoughts if I will take the 2 year program or go somewhere else that offers it for 3 years.

Hi ClayH,

I have submitted most of the required forms to the program but is waiting to take my NCLEX this summer. I have heard that with FNP, having years of nursing experience is not necessarily a requirement to succeed. What are your thoughts/advices?

I hope to ask my parents' family physician to see if she will precept me.

I too am working full time in the ED and have 2 kids under 2 years so l understand your concern! Like I said earlier I have been in contact with 2 students currently in the program. Both are working full time too and one is a single mom of 3 too. They both compared it to RN and said you have to be disiplined but it is definitely doable. A good friend of mine is in a 3 yr FNP program here in AZ that he recommends. He says it's nice to be a slower pace but he wishes he would have just done a 2 yr program to get it over with. That's my thoughts too. We're gonna suffer either way, I would just rather suffer a little more for a yr less!

Hey Chikpow,

Many FNP programs encourage it but some actually enforce it. Usually 1-3 years. I can say that my experience as an RN has been valuable and there are a lot of benefits coming into the FNP with it, but I don't necessarily think it is critical. It depends on you. How easily you grasp concepts. How much dedication you are willing to put in to "catch up" on things that you might miss out on without experience. I used to be a program director for a community college EMS program. For our paramedic program we did not required experience as an EMT basic first. For some students without experience it was very apparent and they failed the program because of lack in foundational skills and methods. Others did excellent and displayed mastery in skills and concepts more so than some students with experience. It truly does depend on you as a person. The road might be harder, but harder doesn't mean impossible :) If you really want it go get it. That's my 2 cents. Hope it helps!

And netch88- I know the courses are 1 at a time. 6 weeks each. The second yr includes clinicals which is about 1-2 shifts a week.

I agree, better to suffer for 2 years rather than 3 years! My company supports my continuing study and would allow me 3 hrs/day to work on my FNP. ONU just received my course eval and hopefully I get in to the fall program! Thanks ClayH!

That's great they are giving you time to get your schooling done while working! You are very lucky. I wish mine did that! ONU evaluated my transcripts in about a week so really pretty quick. Have you taken a statistics course ever? My ONU advisor, Bryna, said commonly students had to take that class at the beginning of the FNP program. Luckily my BSN program required stats so I had it done.
