Ok guys, I'm taking the plunge!

Hey guys,

I am a 25 year old guy - I guess you figured that out - and I am going to be starting my pre-req's for an accelerated BSN program in a couple weeks. I struggled with the thought of being a male nurse and I've come to the decision that I can handle it and that I would be stupid not to do it.

Can any of you guys offer and words of wisodm or advice?

GL guys. I am in school as well and I am learning more than my pea brain can hold but I am really enjoying. The worst part is I miss my family so much but the time I don't have my nose in a book or writing some research paper I am with them. The nice thing is that has boiled my life down to it's essentials and I cannot believe the amount of needless fat I was able to trim out of it.

Good luck Dude--I've been a RN for 10 years and I'm 46 years young. Never too late to try something new. I work in a CVICU taking care of open heart surgeries and don't regret a day of it! Work is constantly a challenge and I'm always learning new tricks. Being a male nurse has never been a problem at all--in fact sometimes I think it gives me an advantage being older and male when I interact with some of the doctors. I've never had a doctor treat me like a subordinate although I have seen the same doctor treat female nurses rudely.

Hey guys,

I am a 30 year old guy - I guess you figured that out - and I am going to be starting my pre-req's for an accelerated BSN program in a couple weeks. I struggled with the thought of being a male nurse and I've come to the decision that I can handle it and that I would be stupid not to do it.

I have a bachelors degree in criminal justice and I am currently working as a parole officer. Yes, I carry a gun and get to kick in doors and throw people in jail and all that fun stuff, but I just do net get any satisfaction from my job. I really don't want to be a cop and there is no room for advancement where I currently work and the bottom line is that I'm just not happy.

So, after doing a lot of research and soul searching, I decided to get my BSN. My ultimate goal is to become a CRNA and I know it's going to be hard, but I'm willing to do what it takes.

It's not the years, it's the miles. (I'm graduating at 48yrs.) But there isn't much point in putting it off until you get younger.

After 40, I think the physical demands of nursing school do get to be a strain. If you find enough time to take care of yourself, you're a lot better organized than me. On the other hand, life experience is a big help, so it sort of evens out. I think the biggest thing is just knowing what you want to do. Once you figure that out, at whatever age you are, it's just a matter of doing it.

Hey NurseMike,

Why's there a question mark in your handle?

Just do it!

I find it interesting you are taking issue with being a nurse considering your plan to enter into a male dominated profession. I am entering into the CRNA program in September '05. Over 60% of CRNA's are male! Hot Damn! Might explain why the incomes and benefits are a bit better than most nurse jobs. Reading some of the other responses gets the mind working. You WILL run into M.D.s who think they are boss and get away with it often with the ladies. Most men don't stand for it and that is why, as mentioned in previous responses that, the Dr.s are pretty cool. I have been in the ICU and ER settings for 10 years and believe it or not I got a job in a local ER where the M.D.s were very difficult to work "with" and that is no doubt what caused me to begin to hate going to work everyday. Thank the Lord for that experience because it motivated me to go get my BSN so that I could apply to CRNA. I only wish I had not waited so long to acquire the BSN but the work was so rewarding that I figured I didn't need another BS to feel worthy of the job. It is very gratifying when you do something well by your patient and they take the time to express their gratitude. Go for it and don't look back, you won't regret it.

I have some advice. First graduate from nursing school. Second, get a few years nursing experience and really start learning. Third, then think about going to CRNA school.

That's my plan. I'm currently taking my pre-requsites so I can enter an accelerated BSN program.

[MIke, heys small work my name is michael too. I too am a 30 workaholic. but i work in the Tax racket and have seriously been considering going back to school towards Nurse Anesthetist. I have very minimal exposure to working in the health industry. Can it be done while working full/part time. or do I need to fully commit all my efforts to studying. Can you suggest what courses I can start to take at my local community college( Long Beach city/Cypress College)? I would totally appreciate your humble advice.

Hey NurseMike,

Why's there a question mark in your handle?

a.) haven't figured out how to change it

b.) haven't passed NCLEX, yet.

c.) still mildly concerned that I may have fallen asleep in Fundamentals and dreamed all this.
