Ok guys, I'm taking the plunge!

Nurses Men

Published

Hey guys,

I am a 25 year old guy - I guess you figured that out - and I am going to be starting my pre-req's for an accelerated BSN program in a couple weeks. I struggled with the thought of being a male nurse and I've come to the decision that I can handle it and that I would be stupid not to do it.

Can any of you guys offer and words of wisodm or advice?

good luck Mike!!!! Hope you do well!

I think you should do it. 30 is plenty young, and it doesn't take that long to become an RN. I'm graduating from nursing school with a goup that includes quite a few 30-somethings, some 40-somethings, and even a 50-something. So there you have it---age is nothing but a number.

well ill be 33 here in a few days! and i was wondering the same thing am i to old to go back to school. guess ill have to look into it.

You and I have a couple of things in common. We are both in our 30's (I'm 39) and are in a similar field. I have been a corrections officer in a medium security prison for the last 8 yrs and have finally reached burn out. It is a dead end job, working for state sucks, and the inmates get more respect than officers do. I can relate to you completely. I have decided to go back to school and start the LPN program in August. I chose LPN because I want to take it slow and work while I pursue my RN, plus getting experience along the way, which I think is important in nursing. I hear all the time about BSNs coming out of college and don't know their butt from their elbow because they have had no floor expeience in a hospital or other medical facility. If you were motivated to get your Bachelor's in CJ, you'll be motivated enough to do the nursing. Wish you the best of luck!!

My job doesn't give me any satisfaction. It's very frustrating.

It's not the years, it's the miles. (I'm graduating at 48yrs.) But there isn't much point in putting it off until you get younger.

After 40, I think the physical demands of nursing school do get to be a strain. If you find enough time to take care of yourself, you're a lot better organized than me. On the other hand, life experience is a big help, so it sort of evens out. I think the biggest thing is just knowing what you want to do. Once you figure that out, at whatever age you are, it's just a matter of doing it.

While doing a clinical rotation through home health, I met the coolest Male RN ever. His storey was neat. He had been a truck driver for ever and one day he was driving down the road and came across "another" car accident, he stopped, like he always did and helped. That day it hit him, how much he loved it and felt needed and like it was his calling.

He is a big ole strapping almost 7 foot tall nurse. He is 48 years old and went to RN school at the age of 42, after being a truck driver for 20 years.

JUST DO IT!!!! You will be awesome!!!

One of the students in my class is 29 and she's doing great :)

Hey I am 33, (omg, I am almost 34) and I have to say, I am freaking tired. Nursing School drains the heck out of ya. But another thing on that is, at this age, we actually study and research and research and want to know everything we can possible know, those younger ones, it amazes me, how much they DONT study and still do fairly well.

Why is that?

All I can so is go for it. I am 43 and starting an entry level MSN in september.

I often ask myself am i too old to do this, but I realize I am too young not to.

Life is a gift, and what we do with it is our choice.

The whole "male nurse" thing freaked me out at first, but if I can spend one day doing something more meaningful than the crap I do at my current job all day, then I will realize the decision I made is not stupid. What is stupid is continue doing somethin you dont enjoy.

Anyway, good luck on your application.

I have a bachelors degree in criminal justice and I am currently working as a parole officer. Yes, I carry a gun and get to kick in doors and throw people in jail and all that fun stuff, but I just do net get any satisfaction from my job. I really don't want to be a cop and there is no room for advancement where I currently work and the bottom line is that I'm just not happy.

So, after doing a lot of research and soul searching, I decided to get my BSN. My ultimate goal is to become a CRNA and I know it's going to be hard, but I'm willing to do what it takes.

Can any of you guys offer and words of wisodm or advice?
