Hello my fellow nursing students. I will be starting my nursing classes on July 6. That's only 12 days from now! I'm both excited and nervous. We had our first orientation yesterday, well it was more like a meet and greet. I have been on YouTube all day looking at videos on nursing school supplies. So I will be starting my school shopping this week. When did you get your school supply list? I was hoping to get mine at orientation, but nope no list! I hope that we can keep each other encouraged through the process. Congratulations to everyone who got accepted into the program.
Today was a good day. I had a math test today that I had to score a 100 on. If I got a 99 on it then I would have to retake it, but I got that 100! I was freaking out about it because I rarely get 100s on math tests, but it's not as bad as I thought it would be. You have to either know the formula or use dimensional analysis. Whatever each individual is comfortable with because there are many ways to calculate the correct dose. We'll get be pros at it once we calculate so much!
After the math test, I had lab. We rotated to different stations which consisted of fall prevention, transporting patient on a stretcher, bed pans/urinals, taking health history. We also practiced with restraints... I hope I don't have to restrain someone in the future. And my first exam is on the 16th! All of my other exams follow it right after.
Keep up the updates everyone! Especially when you get to clinicals. I want to hear about it.
Is everyone doing clinicals this semester? If so, when do you start? My first day of clinicals is on the 24th!
Tomorrow will be the end of week 3 for me. So far we have had 2 skill check offs and a dosage Calc exam. Today was our first real clinical day and tomorrow will be our first time doing a real head to toe assessment on our patient. Next week we have a test and will be checked off on medication administration. I knew nursing school was gonna be tough but I didn't expect it to be like this. My first week I had a mini melt down, I think I was just overwhelmed and scared about the whole thing. We are learning so much so fast but I'm getting through it.
It's great to know that I'm not alone in this journey!
Last night was our "family night" that the nursing school/2nd year nursing students put on. I got to meet my instructors and they gave us a tour and talked about the program and what to expect. The 2nd year students pretty much led the entire thing which was neat to see. It helped reassure me and put my worries at ease a little bit. Everyone seems very nice and willing to help. I'm looking forward to starting in just a handful of days now. :)
How has the classes been for everyone so far? So far, I have a B in each in Med Surg, Health Assessment, and Pharmacology. I'm trying to keep it there and higher even though it is going to get more challenging. Next week is our last clinical on the campus and then we have a pre-clinical ceremony and then we are off to the hospitals. I am very nervous though, I can't lie. Lol. Good luck guys!
Hello all!! Glad to hear how everyone is getting into their groove!! =]
My first exam is tomorrow, at our school we have four exams plus the final; and a Lab exam we have to pass in November in order to move onto Acute Care clinicals. We also have the math test that we have to get a 100 on around the same time.
Friday was our first day in the hospital, to get familiar with the floor and read our assigned patient's chart. Then we got to briefly say hello to them; we will be there for the next 6 Fridays (this is our LTC rotation).
There is a lot of material that gets covered, but I have to say I'm pretty impressed with the prep work our instructors go through. Every one I've met so far is very invested in our success!! =] I hope I am still feeling this good after tomorrow!! lol =p
Keep posting, fellow 2017 graduates!! WE CAN DO THIS!!! =]
God Bless~MLDJ1970
Doing okay. I've been in class since August 20th. I've passed all health assessment tests. We have one every Friday. I've done 1 paper, 1 15minute audiovisual presentation, and 1 17 slide PowerPoint and made A's on them! Had my first test in fundamentals and I made an 84 on it, also passed my skills check offs! Wasn't too happy about the 84 but I passed and I was on 7 chapters 🙌ðŸ¼. I did, however, fail my first pathophysiology exam me I CRIED! I studied for 5 days, made my own notes (15 pages worth), made flash cards, also did quizlet flash cards, got to level 4 mastery for each chapter on lippincott's prepu, and I still failed. It was also on 6 chapters, we had 1 1/2 lectures on these chapters (2 chapters of which she left us to our own devices), and 20 out of 24 people also failed...myself included. Professor refuses to curve it and has been MIA since last week. I had tried contacting said professor to not avail for 4 days so I went to our Dean who ironically got ahold of her within 30 minutes. ?!@)&?&;!!!!
So bummed and frustrated.
Week 4 or 5 for me. They are all starting to blend together. We have our first exam this week. I'm having a hard time "getting into" some of the chapters like patient education, caring, etc. I feel like I know the majority of the material except some of the terminology is different. A lot seems like common sense to me? We did some nclex style questions and I seemed to do well with them. I reviewed how to answer those kind of questions and I think it has made the difference.
How is everyone doing?
Somehow, I'm managing to hang in there. I had the baby September 8th, unfortunately by c section, but he and I were safe and healthy, so that's all I can ask for. I was out of class for 3 weeks. I missed 2 check offs, exam 1, and 2 quizzes (nursing class - 1 exam and 1 quiz in A&P). I was able to keep up with ATI as well as other A&P assignments while I was out. The week I came back I made up 2 quizzes and exam 1. Exam 2 was that same week. I missed all of the lecture content. I had power points, notes, etc., but it's certainly not the same as being in the class. I do better by being in class. My instructors allowed me to take exam 2 today instead of taking it last week to take a bit of pressure off.
I did very well on my quizzes and somehow passed both exams. The first one was much easier (other than the unknown testing style). The one I took today was very difficult as half of it was fill in the blank as it was a make up exam. I thought for sure I bombed it, but managed to just pass which I'm more than happy considering. I found that the most difficult part is when I've narrowed it down to two choices. I also had to remember how to do handle test anxiety/stress. When I first started, I started stressing so bad that I couldn't answer 3/4 of the questions. I finally calmed down, relaxed, and just breezed through the rest and just took it for what it was. I know calming down had a lot to do with passing. Otherwise I would've been too out of my mind to even try to rationalize anything or calm down enough to bring the information to the front of my mind.
I go for my check offs at the end of next week. I practiced with an instructor today. I felt like an idiot. I know the information as well as performing the skills, but I just had this deer in the headlights look and could hardly answer anything which actually gave me little confidence for my exam as a lot of that material was testable for the exam. I feel a lot of dread as I'm not sure I'll get through this next part. If I do, then I feel I can say with absolute certainty that the rest of the semester won't be so bad with having the hardest part behind me.
So I am very excited to officially be a part of the Class of 2017 group ! I received acceptance to my first choice school this week (yay)! I'm a little bummed that the deposit I sent in with my second choice is lost, but overall I will be saving much more going to a community college.
To those that have already started their programs, best wishes to you as you all reach midterms. Only a few more weeks to go before you reach the end of your first semester of nursing school .

How are you studying? With so much material that are covered per exam/quiz that's what scares me the most.
