Hello my fellow nursing students. I will be starting my nursing classes on July 6. That's only 12 days from now! I'm both excited and nervous. We had our first orientation yesterday, well it was more like a meet and greet. I have been on YouTube all day looking at videos on nursing school supplies. So I will be starting my school shopping this week. When did you get your school supply list? I was hoping to get mine at orientation, but nope no list! I hope that we can keep each other encouraged through the process. Congratulations to everyone who got accepted into the program.
Thank you! :)What did / what is everyone wearing to orientation? Orientation is Friday and there was nothing specified about dress code. I'm pretty much planning on some black dress pants and nice top with some comfy flat black shoes (I'm not going to even attempt heals). I hate that I'm probably going to have to go shell out money for some maternity dress pants. The only pairs of dress pants I have are non-maternity and are unbelievably uncomfortable to wear, unless I can somehow finagle them with some rubber bands that can be easily hidden. I wore the dress pants last Saturday and was absolutely miserable in them. Orientation is from 8-11:30, but the drive there, finger printing afterwards, and the drive home. I couldn't stand being in them for 3 hours last weekend.
I really have no idea who I'll be meeting Friday, but since they are affiliated with a teaching hospital where our clinicals will be taking place, I feel like I'd be better off risking being over dressed than under dressed with jeans.
I'll be getting registered for classes as well on Friday. We'll be measured for our uniforms as well, which I really don't know how that's going to go. May have to guess some?
All of my health records have been officially accepted. I feel like I can breathe some now that those are in and accepted. With being admitted so late in the summer, everything being due by the 17th, and being in between PCPs made it rather overwhelming, but fortunately getting back into being organized, it all worked out.
Oh, and did anyone have to buy a sweep second watch? They are stating we need a sweeping second hand watch, but everything I'm finding isn't a sweeping second hand. I'm waiting until orientation to see if they bring this up. Does anyone have any suggestions on where I can get one that is a decent price?
For orientation I wore a pair of capris with a dressy blouse and a pair of flats. I knew we would be there three hours or more so I wanted to be comfortable. I don't remember anyone being overdressed. A few of the people in my cohort bought their watches from Walmart for around $10.00.
I got a short welcome letter on our nursing intranet from our lab coordinator as well as our lab schedule for the month!! I think we'll get our welcome letter from lecture next week and I can purchase books the following Monday. Our lab welcome letter already told us we'd have reading, videos, and power points that would need to be reviewed before class starts..... *nail-biting * #25moredays
For my orientation in the 20th I am planning on wearing a good pair of jeans and a nice shirt. I don't have too much in business casual since I have spent the last 8 years in scrubs at work. So my street clothes are fairly limited and most of what I do have is packed in boxes, since I will be in the process of moving between now and sometime in September. Just will make sure that what I am wearing fits and doesn't look ratty, no "holey" jeans.
AspiringNurseMW: That sounds exciting!
Well, I had orientation this morning. I did opt for a pair of dress pants and a nice top to be safe. My jeans are kind of wonky. They fit but they don't. They fit fine at the top, but are too baggy towards the bottom of the legs. So I figured I'd be safer with the dress pants. The rubber bands worked fine.
Only a couple of others dressed similarly. The rest were in jeans and shorts. It wasn't a big deal either way, but I'm still glad that I wore what I wore. We have a mandatory meeting next Friday that will take place in the auditorium of the hospital. We have to dress business casual as we'll be touring part of the hospital. So I was at least able to ask them if what I was wearing today was what they were looking for.
Additionally, the nursing course for this semester will actually hold its lectures in the auditorium of the hospital. So even for class we have to wear business casual, even for our skills labs. Basically if we're on campus, no jeans. That's only because the school is attached to the hospital and we'll spend time in the hospital outside of clinicals (ie lecture). Badges will be worn at all times, so therefore we're representing the hospital even if we're just there for class, whether inside the hospital or the school. So it's business casual from here on out, unless it's our uniform for clincals.
Which brings me to the other problem. I tried the uniform on. The one size fits me now 35 weeks pregnant. Clinicals start right around estimated due date. I don't know if they will fit properly after birth. So I really don't know if I should order the size that fits me now and maybe order a size smaller just in case. I'm not quite sure what to do.
They also had me meet with someone higher up to discuss how to handle L&D and recovery. She said that they will work with me as much as possible (obviously within reason). Absolute worst case scenario I would have to withdraw, but it wouldn't affect me reapplying as it'd be a medical withdraw and they wouldn't hold that against me. Otherwise they will do everything in their power to allow me to make up any labs and/or clinicals. I have a couple of opportunities during the week to make those up.
I don't have any classes Mondays or Thursdays, for now, so my first official day is the 18th, which is a 7 hour skills lab which will eventually be replaced by clinicals.
Good luck jellis!
Classes start in 1 week, and I feel like I'm starting to get cold feet. I'm ready and excited for this, but I'm just worried about being able to do it. Plus my student email login isn't working. I'm thinking it's not even set up for some reason yet. On the 31st, I was advised that mail was bounced back. I just got login details Friday, but it's not working. I left a voicemail with the appropriate person, but I'm getting anxious because I'm supposed to be receiving an email about what textbooks are needed for my online class and how the online class is even going to work, etc. If I don't hear back by afternoon I'll probably call again since time is so limited.
I'm just hoping to get the rest sorted tomorrow.
All of my (9) books are coming in tomorrow for my one nursing course tomorrow. I already had one of the books, so was happy to see I saved a little there. All the books except one will be utilized throughout the program, so it's not like they're all for the one course. I'm just really looking forward to them coming in. Not that I have any idea of where I'm going to put them.

I hope you get everything straightened out soon augurey! I'm starting to get cold feet too. I'm so happy I'm not the only person feeling this way. I have orientation tomorrow from 8:00-4:30pm and I'm excited but super nervous. I've been having issues with financial aid and a few other hiccups I need to take care of tomorrow, between the issues and all the horror stories I read online I'm not sure what to think. I will let everyone know how my orientation went since several people have been kind enough to share their experience. Good luck to everyone that starts this month! We can do it! Lol
I start 8/31 and I have major cold feet, too. I always think 'can I really do this? Am I going to be as great as a nurse as I hope I will be?' I have a feeling so many other students are feeling the same way as us, and hopefully this will bring our classmates even closer together earlier. Good luck to all of us! We will do great and accomplish many things!!! :)

Hi everyone
Just wanted to let everyone know how orientation went. I wore slacks and comfortable shoes to orientation most of the students wore either jeans or shorts it was very casual. We mainly went over sim lab and clinical times for the upcoming semester and we also ordered our uniforms. Honestly ordering uniforms took up a huge chunk or our time there were only a few sample sizes for several of us to try on it was very unorganized and unexpected. We won't receive our syllabus until Monday morning, we have our first lecture on Monday afternoon.
We also learned that both medical terminology and dosage calculations are self taught which really worries me because math is definitely not my strong suit I really struggle with math. I am going to the learning center to get help with dosage calculations first thing Monday morning. I don't want to wait until it's too late for me to fix it. All in all I'm feeling slightly better after having orientation but I'm still feeling a little uneasy.
Update. We received our welcome to NUR 110 letter today (start date 8/31, orientation back in May). Received my lab schedule for the semester as well as our Frontloading schedule. Frontloading for us is what replaces the first 3 weeks of clinicals, so from 8 to 1 for 3 days (my clinicals are Thurs /Fri) we learn about basics:bed making, bed baths, precautions, PPE, Hygiene, ambulation, body mechanics, vitals, brief bedside assessment etc. Day 4 we do orientation at the facility, day 5 is documentation and day 6 is our first clinical (3rd week)!
I also got my book list. *sad face * Twelve required books and 3 suggested. I'm going to ask if it's possible to hold off buying some of the specialty books until next semester (like psych and maternity /peds) to help stem costs.
And along with the booklist came requires reading, between lab, lecture, and frontloading /clinicals, I have about 160 pages to read for the first week *facepalm*. Might as well get used to it.
I feel like for every "point" in excitement increases, my anxiety/fear is climbing twofold, my Facebook post this afternoon was something along the lines of "what in the world did I get myself into?"
augurey
