OHSU BSN Fall 2017

Published

Hi all I just thought I would start this, since there doesn't appear to be anything started for the Fall 2017 3 year BSN at OHSU. Feel free to update as you get emails regarding interviews, acceptances, etc. This week it looks like everyone should be hopefully getting a email hearing something if they are chosen for a interview. I wonder if due to the lack of any posts for the Fall 2017 that means that competition isn't as fierce as in prior cycles... this is probably not the case. But it seems like the cohort has been alot more quite then in the past.

Does it matter what style it is? There are with pockets and no pockets and other styles.

I wear dickies eds scrubs because I like having so many pockets, but you can wear whatever you want as long as it's the right color

Thank you, I was also considering the fabric. Kind of want it to be cotton. Thank you again.

If you go to the one on macadam the guy that works there knows everything. He will tell you which ones will shrink and how to wash them. A lot of people shrink them when they first get them. But I would definitely go there for selection and the most help. Plus.. A DISCOUNT!

Hey all- OHSU Portland nursing student here: started the 3-yr program last Fall (2016). I don't have the time to go back and re-read all 300+ comments so far, but I'll check in here a few times over the next couple days and answer any questions that you all might have if I can be helpful. Congrats to those of you who have gotten in, and to those of you who did not, don't give up!!! Keep making yourselves more competitive, re-take sciences as needed to bump up grades (B+ at least in these!) and apply to absolutely no less than 5 schools each cycle!

Ahhhaha and on second look, I see my good friend (and classmate) MBells has been answering questions on here recently. Of course you're here! í ½í¸‚ (we first "met" via allnurses last year, before we got accepted into the same cohort)

Hello friend. ;)

It would be helpful to know what to expect and what not when we start in the fall. What is the best thing that happened to you at OHSU and worst? How is the workload? Any general FYI. Thanks

Workload the first quarter wasn't too bad. There was a couple group projects (research paper and a couple of presentations). If you have cna training a lot of it is refresher for you. A lot of the labs are spent teaching basic nursing skills.

Tests are a bit different than what you are use to. It's more practical application of knowledge rather than rote memorization and regurgitation. In addition to knowing the little details, you have to be able to plug them in to the big picture, if that makes any sense.

I have a few additional questions...are there skills tests too? Kind of like the CNA state exam? How many sets of scrubs would you recommend? And my two greatest fears...IV's and catheters...when do we need to worry about learning those skills? And finally, did you ever get involved in any extracurricular activities at the school? Wondering what opportunities there might be (although might not have enough time!)? Thanks!

I would expect to get started right away. I know a few people that thought that they could kind of take it slow in the beginning and it ended up biting them in the butt. Don't stress too much. It's hard and it's a big workload but they set you up to succeed and everyone is really helpful! The best thing I've EVER done is being at OHSU and the best thing that has happened to me was meeting all the people who have become an awesome support system for me. I don't know if anything that bad has happened to me but the second term I had some family things and then I let myself far pretty far behind. Theres a large workload but it's doable. I am a single mom with a four year old and I haven't struggled too badly.

At the Portland campus we use ATI for the medication administration exams but in skills lab you demonstrate your ability and you get checked off. You do not do anything like the CNA state test. First term you could get away with one pair of scrubs as you aren't doing many clinicals. Later on I think its beneficial to have two (you only have clinicals 2 days a week). There are people who are involved in Nursing Students Without Borders and Student Nurses Association. We have not started IVs (Im assuming it will start in fall term?) except assessing the IV site. We learned catheter insertion and removal at the end of Winter term so we were prepared to do them this term in Acute. I will tell you that catheter is not as scary as it sounds (I did my first on my OR rotation day... so it was easy and made me feel much better). There is a mentorship program which I plan to get involved in next year.

we did catheters in chronic 1 (winter term), IVs we did in acute 1 (this past spring). If an opportunity to use a skill pops up during clinicals, I'd jump on it. I did multiple IVs in one day this quarter because I was in the right place to say "hey, can I do that for you?" IVs are super easy as long as you don't hesitate... a lot of people get creeped out sticking people (same with vaccinations) that they hesitate and mess up their stick. Catheters are daunting at first because of the whole aspect of working in a sterile field and all of the things you can do to contaminate it if you aren't paying attention, but once you practice a couple times you'll figure a method that works.

There's several extracurricular programs that Mbells pointed out. SNA and nursing students without borders are the two that pop out, we also have AWHON (might have wrote that wrong) which is something to do with maternal nursing and a gerontological honors society (you get a scholarship for doing extra work related to geriatric nursing). I work full time (don't recommend it if you don't have to do it), have a wife and kids, and am a bit older than most of the other students, so I don't really have time to hang out or participate in stuff outside of class.
