OHSU BSN Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all I just thought I would start this, since there doesn't appear to be anything started for the Fall 2017 3 year BSN at OHSU. Feel free to update as you get emails regarding interviews, acceptances, etc. This week it looks like everyone should be hopefully getting a email hearing something if they are chosen for a interview. I wonder if due to the lack of any posts for the Fall 2017 that means that competition isn't as fierce as in prior cycles... this is probably not the case. But it seems like the cohort has been alot more quite then in the past.

Hello, I had a question about the health insurance. I know that OHSU will just automatically put students on their health insurance, but I wonder how expensive it is? Does anyone know about this?

I don't know the exact number, but it's between 1-1.5k each term, and it's just added to your tuition. They should tell you in one of the packets they send you. If you want to know the exact number, I can look it up for you.

Oh, and I also wanted to add that if you utilize JBT at OHSU (portland), they waive your copay for office visits and offer free services such as behavioral health services. It doesn't matter if you use their insurance or not.

thank you. Do you know if I have states insurance, would that be considered enough for them?

Yes, I believe so.

I can confirm that if you have OHP, you should be able to waive OHSU's medical and dental. I applied for OHP medical AND dental last year, and then OHP contracted my application to Kaiser (so I have Kaiser for medical) and some company called Capitol Dental Care, both entirely through OHP. This has been sufficient to entirely wave all of OHSU's insurances. I can even use my Kaiser OHP at the Joseph B. Trainer clinic and pay $0 for any visit.

If you're hoping to use OHP to waive the OHSU insurances but don't have OHP yet, I would recommend you apply absolutely asap. I would even recommend you call them weekly and tell them you need the insurance for school and ask if there is ANY way your app might be expedited.

Thank you very much for that info. Yes, I already do have Providence insurance through OHP.

Hey guys!

So I have a few questions for you all that were accepted into OHSU's BSN program for this Fall. First of all, have any of you received a packet in the mail indicating all of your required equipment, etc,? This is different from the initial welcoming packet where you send in your admission fee. I know that I can look this up online, but I'm not sure if all of this info is up to date. Specifically, I'm thinking of the type of required stethoscopes. Online, it says for Littmann, they recommended the classic II, but I'm not sure if that is still what they prefer, or if they would rather see the newer Littmann versions. Also, has anyone already bought their badge or scrubs? I heard from one girl that she already got her badge, yet I was under the impression that the badges aren't yet available (I'm referring to the Monmouth campus). Last question, has any current OHSU students used a Mac , or are any of you here planning using a Mac? This is the only computer that I have, and according to the technology standards for OHSU, using a Mac can be tricky.

Current OHSU Portland 3-year student here: I can only thoroughly speak for the Portland campus, but I'll give your questions a go. 1) Last year, most of us definitely did not have all of our supplies until the first day of the program or later, and as for stethoscopes specifically, that was entirely a preference matter at least for our cohort. Most people use Littman because it's a great brand; some got Littman II Classics, some got Littman Cardiology, and I think one girl even got an electronic amplifying one. I have a cardiology III, and while it's probably overkill, it does help to have one that can pick up very low volume sounds very well. That said, unless your program site really requires a specific scope (which I doubt), if you don't have the $$$ to drop, something like the Classic II should be more than fine for your first year. Also, get a stethoscope case! And consider having it engraved with your name! They walk away pretty easily when set down I hear. 2) If I recall correctly, my cohort didn't get our badge until day 1. Could be different at Monmouth though. We have to have Hunter Green-colored scrubs, and most of my cohort goes to Affordable Scrubs off Macadam because they really are affordable and give a discount. 3) I have a Mac, and I've had only one problem all of last year in using it up at the Portland campus: We have an exam-taking software called ExamSoft that we use often. In winter term, when MacOS Sierra first came out, I upgraded early to Sierra, and then found out two days later that ExamSoft was not yet compatible with Sierra. I had to downgrade back to El Capitan (a real pain in the ass) for an upcoming exam, and then like two weeks later ExamSoft put out an update that was compatible with Sierra, so I upgraded to Sierra again. All that to say, put Sierra on your Mac, don't be quick to upgrade to future MacOS releases, learn to use Google Drive or something similar for word processing, and you should be 100% fine. I also have MSOffice for Mac and Parallels with a version of Windows 8 on it (so I can run Windows on my Mac), but I honestly think I could've gotten by this last year without either of these and been totally fine.

Awesome, thanks so much;) There's sooo much to do when you're a newbie that it's overwhelming! I bought a pair of hunter green scrubs online, and when they arrived, they definitely looked like a dark forest green, but the scrubs I've seen OHSU student wear look more like a dark teal green. How much variation is there with scrub shades of green?

Hey guys!

So I have a few questions for you all ...

As far as stethoscopes go, you can choose any one you want. Littmann are good, and they are sold in the WOU book store (This might mean you can use financial aid to buy them). However, if you want to get a different brand you totally can.

I am not sure how you would get your badge early, you will be provided with a temporary badge at orientation or on the first day of class. You will keep the temp badge for a few weeks until your permanent badge arrives from Portland.

Mac is ok. You have to deal with some headaches due to the testing software we use, but it is possible.

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it!:)
