OHSU BSN Fall 2017

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi all I just thought I would start this, since there doesn't appear to be anything started for the Fall 2017 3 year BSN at OHSU. Feel free to update as you get emails regarding interviews, acceptances, etc. This week it looks like everyone should be hopefully getting a email hearing something if they are chosen for a interview. I wonder if due to the lack of any posts for the Fall 2017 that means that competition isn't as fierce as in prior cycles... this is probably not the case. But it seems like the cohort has been alot more quite then in the past.

Hello, can someone explain little bit about financial aid. Does FA typically cover the tuition and books at least? or does everyone pay oop?

You'll get a packet pretty soon about how much the estimated costs are for the year and what financial aid is available. Most people pay by taking stafford and perkins loans.

Hey future OHSU nursing students lurking on here: Just an FYI, some of those of us already in the program for 1+ years are working on creating a sort of unofficial guide for new, incoming 3-year students. It's a document that is known about by the program staff, and is approved of by them, but is not an official OHSU document if that makes sense. It'll be most helpful for those at the Portland campus, but since the program material is in theory the same at each OHSU campus, I'd imagine it'll be very helpful for students of any of the OHSU campuses.

It'll have a bunch of frequently asked questions with answers, and a bunch of useful or required (by the program) links with explanations for them, all of which is meant to help you better understand what you'll be walking into in September. Each year the incoming cohorts generally don't know how to prepare in the summer, and then come Fall term they're just thrown into the thick of things for the next 9 months, and so this guide is meant to help make the transition a little more smooth.

A bunch of us mentors are working on it and editing it, but if you shoot me an email at [email protected] I'll make sure you receive a copy when it's finished (~ August 3rd). Congrats to those starting in September.

Can someone tell me the difference between these types of loans that they offer and which would one recommend? I am totally lost in this

Of the loans that are offered by FASFA, Subsidized stafford loans don't accrue interest until you complete school, unsubsidized begin to accrue interest after you take them. Perkins loans are the best, as they are forgiven if you work for a short time as a nurse after graduating, but we were told last year was going to be the end of them.

yes I read that they will end offering Perkins in September of this year. Thank you for clear explanation.

If you get the option to take Perkins loans, do it. It's more or less free money. There's also the SdS scholarship through OHSU that closes on the 1st, I don't know if you have ohsu email yet but I got an email about it today.

Yes I got it in the morning-already filled out.

Hello, I have a question for those that are already in the program. Do we need some kind of a bag for clinicals? What do you recommend?

Most of us just use our backpacks. At least at the Portland campus. Some of us have stethoscope cases. The one I got is from amazon.

All we really needed for clinicals was our stethoscopes, penlights, a laptop to chart on SimChart, and snacks/lunch. No special bag required.

What kind of laptop? Windows or mac?
