OHSU BSN 2016 Applicants

Published

Hey everyone! I am applying for OHSU BSN monmouth program this coming Fall for the 2016 school year! I would love to get a thread started :) It was so helpful last year! I will also be applying for Chemeketa this year.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Hey!

I will be applying to OHSU again this year. Now that all of my prerequisites are complete I transferred to Western and will start working on my upper division courses. I am also taking chemistry this fall in order to get more extra consideration (I already have microbiology and work experience).

Currently with all of my prerequisites complete my prereq GPA is 3.93, I have one B in WR121 which I hope to replace with a writing intensive class I am taking this fall.

Hi guys,

I'm also looking at applying to OHSU this fall. This is my first go around applying to nursing schools and I'm quite nervous to be honest. It looks as though everyone on these threads have somewhere around the 3.9-4.0 GPA, with x amount of years working in the healthcare field. I'll be honest, I graduated back in 2008 with a degree in accounting and have taken all of my prerequisites over the last 2 years to be able to apply to schools. I have a 3.7 prereq gpa, and zero work experience in the healthcare field. Would anyone mind giving me some insight on what the whole application process is like, for this school as well as others? I'll also be applying to Chemeketa, as well as a few other CC's up here in the Seattle area. Good luck to you guys this upcoming cycle!

Hey J, will you be applying to the accelerated bachelors program or the three year program?

The application process is not so bad once you get into the swing of it, though it can be difficult at times to find out exactly what they want, we were pretty good on here last year at helping each other through the process. Are there any specific questions or concerns you have?

I was planning on applying to the Klamath satellite, but I'm not sure if I want to drive 60 miles one way for three years, so I'm probably going to be applying to the Ashland campus which is way closer to where I'm at. I'm planning on applying after fall semester at Rogue, I currently have all A's on my prereqs (as long as I keep the grades I have right now), except for stats which by my calculation puts me at a 3.92 GPA.

I'm not sure exactly what discretionary points OHSU grants, but I got an A in Microbio and a B+ in Chemistry, and I've worked as a nursing assistant for the VA for the last two years; however, the VA did not require certification so I am not a CNA. I did have EMT experience as a medic in the Army for several years, which I think may qualify me as having patient care experience.

Hey guys! I look forward to continuing this process with you! I don't believe they calculate the micro and chem grade. You just need to have passed them. When I applied last year, they told me the lowest GPA to get asked to interview was a 3.4. So, as far as I know, not having a 4.0 isn't a deal breaker! I will be applying with a 3.74, CNA experience, micro & chem, and volunteer experience. Last year I applied without having all the pre reqs finished and because of that my GPA was calculated low. Make sure you have them all completed prior to applying. I am glad I went through the process though! I am excited to apply again this year :) I've replaced 2 B's with A's this Summer so I am ready for OHSU and Chemeketa!

That is my biggest take away from applying last year. You really need to have everything complete in order to be competitive. I am, however, very glad that I applied last year and got the experience going through the process.

This will be my first time applying. I didn't have microbio finished last cycle and I had a lot of B's as well. I took 6 classes this summer semester and so far have at the lowest a 98% in anthropology going into the final week, and got A's in a lot of classes I had B's in previously. I was hoping on applying for Stanford's PA program but unfortunately because it's a certificate program instead of a degree producing one the VA won't pay for it.

If I applied the first day the application opened I would have two B's in my prereqs, one in dev psych and one in stats. My schedule pretty much precludes taking statistics because it's four days a week, but I'm pretty confident I'll get an A in developmental psych. I got a B during a semester when I didn't purchase the book and I didn't show up half the time due to appointments with the VA so I figure if I'm there full time and have the book it should be a shoe-in.

Hi! Did they tell you what to work on for the next time you apply? From another thread I saw you in last year it sounded like you had a great application to work with! I'm a little nervous now. I have a 4.0, work experience, micro, full series of chemistry, and stats. Curious as to what else I could possible do to increase my chances?!?! Anybody applying to Chemeketa too?

Sounds pretty promising!! I don't think you can much better than that!! You'll do great! I am applying to Chemeketa as well!

Hi guys!! I'm planning on applying this year to both the regular BSN Portland program and the Accelerated program and I'm REALLY REALLY NERVOUS!!! Haha. My undergrad GPA was not good... 3.6. However, I did transfer in a LOT of classes to complete my undergrad all of which are A's, and none of them are factored into that GPA so I think it might be more like a 3.7? At least that's my hope... All of my prereqs thus far are A's but I still have A&P II and III to complete. I did take micro though already (at the same time that I took A&P I, it was the worst idea). So I think with my transfer classes and my pre-reqs I'm really really hoping I'll be at least close to a 3.8.

I've worked in the medical field for 4+ years, and have actually been working at OHSU for the past 9 months or so since I moved to portland BUT I have not been working direct patient care. Instead, I've been working on the insurance end or scheduling end. However, the head doctor of our department is the nicest man and has basically let me shadow him in the OR or in clinic whenever I want to. So although I won't have enough hours to put it down on my application, I'll be able to reference it in an essay or interview (if I even get that far...) Also I'm about to start up a volunteer position at Doernbecher (OHSU's Children's Hospital), so I'll be able to reference that as well.

Just a heads up, OHSU has posted the updated admissions instructions for this year, I believe that the application will open on NursingCAS tomorrow.
