OHSU BSN 2016 Applicants

U.S.A. Oregon

Published

Hey everyone! I am applying for OHSU BSN monmouth program this coming Fall for the 2016 school year! I would love to get a thread started :) It was so helpful last year! I will also be applying for Chemeketa this year.

Hope to hear from you all soon!

Congratulations to those of you that got in! It's an amazing journey you are about to begin! (I should know, I just graduated from it!) For those on the alternate list, be patient and keep hoping. I was an alternate to get in for my year (as far as I know), and I know it sucks to wait, but it does happen! And if you don't get in this year, don't give up! I tried for three years and when I felt hopeless about it, BOOM! In. It's worth it. Challenging, but worth it.

Also, if you have any questions or want to know how to get in touch with people on campus now, let me know! There are a bunch of different Facebook pages that have been incredibly helpful over the years.

Congratulations and Good Luck to you all, be you starting this year, the next or farther in the future!

Hey there! I would love to chat with you!! I'm going to try to message you on here. Ha!!

Hi everyone! This question goes to anyone who is already in one of OHSU's nursing programs.

My wife will be starting the accelerated program at the Portland campus this fall and I wanted to surprise her with a laptop for school. OHSU's website says that Chromebooks aren't accepted. It seems like chromebooks are capable of most types of tasks needed in school.

Are there any current students out there that are using a Chromebook for this program?

Thanks!

OHSU technology standards say this about netbooks and chromebooks: "While they provide access to the Internet and keep a person connected to the web and email, they are underpowered to run Microsoft Office and are not supported by our online testing platform."

OHSU students are expected to use their laptops for completing the majority of their homework assignments as well as all testing (quizzes, midterms, finals). Because they are such an important part of the OHSU curriculum and because the school specifically states that they are not acceptable I would highly advise against trying to use one. It would be a real headache to find out in September that you now have to buy a second laptop because the chromebook is, as they have already said, unacceptable.

Question.. I submitted by application through NursingCAS and I received the email that everything had been verified but I never received an email that OHSU received my application like I did for PCC. Do they not send one of those out? Thanks!!!

I would love to hear from current OHSU students!! I am debating between two schools and would love to hear some feedback on OHSUs program. Things you like? Anything you don't like? I think the cost is what is making my decision so hard. Did financial aid cover the cost for you?

I'm on the GI bill, plus FASFA, and scholarships -- I've been making quite a bit of money each quarter to go to school so my opinion is somewhat biased. Faculty has been hit or miss, some are experts in their fields, some are teaching due to the old adage "those who can't, teach." There's been some cool experiences, especially in acute care courses, but the last couple of quarters (Chronic II/populations/epidemiology) had a lot of filler content that really stressed the concept of social determinants of health but has kind of made me feel like I'll be out of my element when doing hands on nursing again when my senior starts since I haven't done patient care for half a year now.

Thank you so much for responding!! It surprises me that you haven't had hardly any hands on experience the last couple quarters. What have clinicals been like then? I wonder if the second year at MHCC would be the same in the fact that you don't get a ton of hands on experience. Thank you for your input! :)

So the difference between an ADN and BSN program is a couple of extra classes which focus more on community health, populations health, and leadership. We get the same clinical time as MHCC (more, actually since we go to different types of clinical settings), but our second and third year has the addition of these courses, which aren't as hands-on or critical thinking focused as say, acute I and II was. For chronic II, I was at the VA doing nursing appointments monitoring chronic illnesses in pt's there, which was nice, but wasn't as engaging as getting to experience say, the ED. Populations was a whole different type of class altogether, it was more of a research project on a demographic in which you explore the health risks and needs of a community. It's great if you're considering going into community nursing, but if you're more interested in the acute care side of things, it slows the pace of the program down a bit.

Thank you for clarifying! I am deciding between OHSU and MHCC and trying to weigh the pros and cons of each. So your feedback really helps! If I was to go to MHCC, I definitely would continue on to OHSU to get my BSN. But I am leaning more towards just doing the whole program there. Thank you!

Yeah, if you're planning on getting your BSN you'll have to do the extra classes anyways, so you might as well do it in one shot with the same cohort.
