Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.
I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.
As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.
As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.
I think you will find OU is getting more organized with the program. I'm not sure what the issues have been but keep checking in with them and speak with the nursing dept. The initial DARS report may not be the final version. They were VERY generous with my transfers. They will be fair and don't seem to try to dig up stuff you don't have to take just to get you into more classes. I even got credit for a "D" grade which I so welcome! You will more than likely receive credit for A&P, etc. They will go over the DARS with you on the phone after it's completed. Some folks are starting the program without a complete DARS report because they don't want to wait. My interaction with OU this past week resulted in personal, verbal communication and ALL of my questions were answered promptly. I hope the process goes well for you. I start my first class 9/5. There are others much further along. Good luck with whatever program you select!
Hi guys! I just actually submitted my application today and noticed that they require 192 credits to be able to graduate. Did anyone notice that? Do they even award credits for having a valid RN license? Because other institutions do. If they don't I'll be 26 credits short even after completing all the required classes plus more.
Btw, did anyone have trouble transferring their 3 credit nutrition course equivalent to OU's 4 credit nutrition course? Thanks a lot!

The 192 includes transferrable credit. And since they are a RN to BSN program, they award credits for your previous RN program. I've been in the program since Jan 11, and have 6 classes left after this summer 2 term. Based upon my experience, if they say they require 4 credits, then your 3 credits will not fulfill the requirements. However, you can always challenge. Just be prepared to have to retake course, or take another course that satisfies the requirements.
I also need Nutrition. All of the course in my area are 3 credits. So I'll have to take at OU to fulfill the requirement.

If your credits are based on semester hours - then that 3 credit hour course should be fine. There will be a huge difference in what OU gives you for past credits if your program was semester based. OU is currently quarter based - so a 3 credit semester is worth 4.5 credit hours based on the quarter. I have 9 classes to take after the one I am currently enrolled in - and my transfer credits are currently 202.45!!!!
Make sure you push for credit for everything! They are pretty good and going through transcripts with a fine tooth comb and don't appear to be out to add extraneous courses. It's a regular brick and mortar institution rather than a profit based on line only program. They are particular about cultural diversity or something like that...and Jr level composition. NOTE: The classes that are non-nursing cost more...except the course in Asia for the cultural requirement...it's priced the same. So pay close attention to that. Good luck with the process!
"i spent about a week reviewing my assessment book. i had tons of questions on heent. i barely skimmed that section, so i did a lot of educated guessing on those questions. you have 2hrs to take the test and i hit submit with 1sec left. "
did you order the text for the class since you didn't know if you'd place out or not? just wondering what to study in advance. i was looking at text last night but had no clue what they would be expecting us to know. any ideas here? is it disease process or what?
thank you!
Hello!I do not know if I am replying to one person a group or whatever but I have some questions if anyone can help me more than these wonderful college "advisors." All they keep asking me for is my money an application, and I cant tell heads from tails what is going on here.
Okay, why is OU so cheap compared to everywhere else. Way cheaper, more than 1/2 the price? I have heard "Rumors" that they do not transfer for NP programs. Some of the classes they offer will transfer but few? They do not have the right grading system per the Ohio Revised Code where the law states the rule of C or 70% or better before non-didactic? work? It is a University, so why this stigma? I am so confused, I do not know what to do? None of these schools offer the chart that states equivilent course work. Does OU have the regional accredidation for their nursing school, if not then the credits won't transfer anywhere. Please help, not trying to down the school I am very interested. I tried to speak with someone from there today but I want it all out in order prior to me signing anything, and especially before I talk money or loans. I went through it with my last college, but they were pretty okay with it. The school that puts it in front of my face prior to my name signed on a line stating I am paying the large masses of money will probably win.
Does anybody know the reality of the quality that is associated with this program.
The OU tuition is less than many schools but there are also quite a few that are either roughly the same or in a few cases, less. Some examples are U Texas - Arlington, U Wyoming and Slippery Rock State U in PA. The real question that should be asked is: "Why are some of those RN-BSN programs so expensive?" OU is regionally and nationally accredited and offers both a traditional brick-and-mortar RN-BSN program as well as the online. I haven't heard of any problems with OU grads progressing to MSN/NP programs and frankly would be surprised to learn of any. The whole transfer thing is difficult almost no matter where you go. You can search this thread for examples, including mine. You may want to check the UT-A thread out on this particular topic. They are far worse than OU. The Univer of PHX will do an unofficial transcript evaluation for you prior to applying but of course their program is more than 3x the cost of OU's. If you are that curious about school ratings, you can find one for most colleges & universities on the US News & World Reports web site.
Could anyone who's done the health appraisal exam for testing out shed some light on how to prepare??? Do I just need to order the book and review? Someone posted a while back that there are actually 3 tests and a case study to complete to test out. Thanks for any feedback!

I applied to Ohio University and UTA this week and these threads have provided me so much information! I understand some people waited months to hear back, do you think I can still expect it to take this long? Also, do you all think your DAR reflected a fair transfer of credits? For example, I took Anatomy & Physiology as two separate classes both worth 4 credits. I see on the OU site that the classes are worth 5 credit hours each. I am not sure if I am comparing apples to oranges since mine were semester classes. Did anyone else have a similar experience? I know your advice won't be "official" but I would like a general idea what to expect!
Again, this forum has been wonderful, thanks everyone!
