Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

I will call on Monday. Previously communication with OU has been extremely difficult. When does Fall officially commence for them? I saw something about II classes starting Oct??? Anyhow, how long for you to complete the program? Thanks for the info. Can you give me an example of a typical assignment so I can see what it's like?

Chuckster, have you started your course? Please give me the inside scoop on the program. I am enrolled in another program but I'm having second thoughts. I'm still eligible to start OU this fall. My questions are is it all paper writing? What is the course format and how feasible is it to complete a course in 5 weeks. Any feedback appreciated from people attending.

Thank you!

Yes, I began NRSE 300 - Transitions on 25 Jul, which is the second summer session. You've already gotten some responses that answer your question about the feasibility of 5 week courses and the writing component for the program. Those folks, who've already completed some of the courses, are in a much better position to provide answers than I am.

so what do you think thus far? I don't want to bail ship only to discover it's not a wise move. I would love your honest insight. I tried to go to the DARs report using my Ohio ID but no luck. I also have a PID but can't recall what that's used for.

Thanks again,

Susan

Honestly - I really like OU. The TA's for my classes have been great - always there if I need them. Assignments are very straightforward - there is nothing tricky. Read the instructions and the grading rubric and fulfill them - and you are golden! Discussion board requires you to post a response to a question or subject from the instructor. Then you are required to respond to 2 students usually. Not that difficult. I had to relearn some time management skills as I had been out of school for quite a few years. All papers are APA format - your go to site is the OWL at Purdue website for APA questions. Communications with the actual school of nursing aren't that difficult - there is usually someone there to answer your question or they call you back within 30 minutes or so. DARS - I had my completed one by the 2nd or 3rd week of transitions. Fall I starts on September 5th. HTH.

Oh - PID is your student ID. Used it to access the online library - and I think I remember using part of it to set up My Ohio? I will look at the email they sent and let you know for sure.

My current program is very straight fwd with excellent staff. But my ultimate goal is NP school and this program puts that a long ways away. Can someone send me a sample of a typical course...maybe private email if you wish. I spend way too much time on my course and it's literally making me ill. I can't write papers exclusively...the constant computer time is catchin up to me in a bad way. Thank you all.

How are the tests conducted at OU?

Exam or quizzes for nursing are timed. I took statistics and it was proctored.

Do those that are in the program feel the 5 week nursing courses are reasonable for the working student? What types of assigments are there for nursing classes? I don't mind papers but I had 17 papers for one course plus quizzes and on line posts. I'm not looking for an easy out but I do need to balance my life a bit.

OMG...That is ridiculous. If you are having to do that much, then OU will be CAKE WALK for you. You really don't do a lot of papers at OU. Most of your work is via assignments where you fill in blank defined areas, you have to post a discussion and then respond to 2 students, most classes have quizzes (some weekly...others 1 or 2). You have weekly reading and videos to watch (but you can still do well and not really spend a lot of time doing this). Classes might have 1 or 2 major papers to complete, then done over a 2-3wk period. But definitely not 17. I would definitely have a hard time if OU was anything similar to the program you are currently in.

Remember that OU advertised themselves at participating hospitals as an ACADEMIC OUTREACH program. They presented the program as a program that could be doable for the FULL-TIME employee. Therefore there is no way they could require as much work as your current program.

Yeah! I am so grateful for your detailed reply. I loved the program faculty where I was enrolled but I can't work, raise kids and manage that time type of commitment at this time. You have answered a lot of questions for me and I appreciate your time. How far along are you?

No problem....Glad to help.

I started OU in Jan 11. So far I've completed 8 classes (6 nursing and 2 non-nursing). After Sum 2 (our current session), I will only have 4 nursing classes and 2 non nursing classes left to take. I'll graduate after the Spr 1 (2012) session. I double up b/c I want to be done as soon as possible. And I don't work FT, so doubling up is doable for me.

Good Luck on your decision.
