Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Hello Fellow OU student's,

I took the summer off but will be doing Cultural Diversity and health Interventions in the fall.

Im still waiting for them to send out the email that says my DARS is completed.I went to the Ohioportal site which tells you which courses have transfered over but also what the equivilant is. They have courses listed that are not actual courses for transfer at there school. Im not feeling having to take basic chemistry when I had organic chemistry

You really have to wait until the DARS report is completed to figure out what it what :uhoh3:. Chemistry should transfer over - after you get your report, call the school of nursing and ask to speak to an advisor. They will sort it out for you.

Have you taken transitions yet? That is the first class you have to take, then you can start taking the others.

Good luck to you!

Not sure if anyone else uses this, but this has helped me to plan ahead regarding classes.

Chuckster, have you started your course? Please give me the inside scoop on the program. I am enrolled in another program but I'm having second thoughts. I'm still eligible to start OU this fall. My questions are is it all paper writing? What is the course format and how feasible is it to complete a course in 5 weeks. Any feedback appreciated from people attending.

Thank you!

I've been in the program since Jan 11. Definitely not all paper writing. All of the courses you have to post regarding a specific topic, then respond to 2 classmates weekly. I think I've done excellent in the program b/c of it's 5wk format. I tend to get distracted and bored easily, so the 5wk format works for me. Some classes have weekly quizzes, some don't. Most have some type of weekly assignment. Some have a detailed paper that you have 2-3wks to complete. It really just depends on the class and the instructor.

Do you find it doable? I work FT, have 2 kids and I'm spending more than 25 hrs a week per module in my current program. It's almost all papers. I love the instructor, etc but today I was sick in bed with a migraine from the stress and time spent in front of the computer. I don't know if I can maintain this pace. How challenging is the program? Do you find you have to spend more than 20 hrs a week on the assignments? I am literally ill from too much sit time in front of a screen. I don't know what to do. I'm eligible to enroll in OU this fall but I've lost all my information for log ins, etc. Thank you so much for your support!

I work PT. Have 2 small active kids. And my husband has a pretty busy job. So I'm busy. I double up on classes and spend about 15hrs/week doing homework. I DON'T read unless absolutely necessary. Before the class start and I have access to the syllabus, I map out a game plan. I tend to tackle class #1 (Sun-Wed) and class #2 (Thurs-Sat). I am sleep deprived b/c I tend to do better at night with less distractions. I also dedicate 1 FULL day when all I do is homework. The program isn't hard, just time consuming.

Thanks for that info. So with all that said can you share the types of homework assignments you do? How long will it take you to complete the program? I only need the 9 nursing courses. Thanks again! I wish I could see a sample course outline.

Only 15 hours per week for 2 classes??? That's not bad at all! I've read in other programs to devote about 3 hours/credit each week.

I'm taking a 3 hr course with 8 modules. I put in no less than 20 hrs/week and it's killing me. I'm a good student and organize my time. I think I need to reevaluate.

It's very doable - some of the posters here are doubled up on classes - taking 2 at once. I love the 5 week format - it's quick and then its done. Call the school of nursing - they will resend the login info it you want to go ahead and enroll. Good luck to you, whatever you decide.
