Ohio University RN-to-BSN Program

Nursing Students Ohio University

Updated:   Published

Since it seems that there's quite a bit of interest, I'm attempting to start a new thread devoted exclusively to the OU on-line RN-BSN program that will hopefully build on the comments on assorted previous threads.

I'd like to ask nevergonnagiveup, mtsteelhorse and babynurse73 - all of whom (I think) are either already in the program or have applied for admission - to post about their experiences. I just sent in my application and plan to post periodically about relevant issues. If we can populate the thread with good material, it could become a very useful resource for both those considering the OU program and students already in it. Once that happens, I'd hope we could prevail upon the forum moderators to make it a sticky thread.

As indicated, I've only recently applied to the program. So far, I'm happy with the support and information I've gotten. I've been contacted by an OU "enrollment specialist" who was somewhat helpful (I suspect that they have dual roles, one being to provide basic information to prospective students and the other to follow-up with the prospects and help to fill the roster for the program). This person e-mailed me, followed up with a phone call and was able to provide some useful, if basic, information about the program. I also sent a lengthy e-mail to OU with quite a number of specific, detailed questions. This too resulted in both an e-mail and telephone response, this time from an academic advisor in the OU School of Nursing. Again I received some useful and quite helpful information. All in all, my early experience has been pretty positive.

As indicated above, I plan to post about relevant issues that come up as I work my way through the admission and evaluation process. I'd very much like to hear from others about their experience with OU and I'm sure that there will be a lot of interest by others in our collective experience with the program.

Open up a word document and type your discussion post in that so you can save it and your browser does not time out and you lose your data. Then you can copy and paste it directly into the discussion board forum. Hope this helps!

Am I the only one having trouble registering for Spring? I went to search for classes and can not find any rn-to-BSN classes in the search.

There is a thread running about this issue. Look for Spring 13 or something like that.

I still can not find any information on this and the school is less than helpful. If anyone can either give me a link to the proper thread or give me direction I would greatly appreciate it.

I'll be starting Nursing classes in January (2013) and I have signed up for 4510 (Professional Nursing Practice), 4530 (Family Nursing), and 4560 (Gerontology). I'm wondering if I have bitten off more than I can chew or is this doable? I work 3-ten hour shifts/week. Thanks for the input!

Are you taking them all at once? Or one 5 week class at at time, if that's the case you will be fine, too much to chew if you take all three at once, just know that since they have combined classes it's been crazy and unorganized!!!

I'm 8 months into the program and am wondering if this is going to be worth it. Seriously, I am getting so tired of school, and yesterday I figured I have 14 more classes that they say I need to take. It wouldn't be so bad if they all were in the 5 week format, then I could complete 3 per semester. But most of the gen ed courses are 15 weeks, and I can't do more than 2 at a time.

I work 2 jobs(about 48-50 hours a week), have a mentally ill 15 yr old, and am shall we say an "older nurse". I keep asking myself, why am I doing this? I spend 15-20 + hours a week on these nursing classes. So, I have given up most anything that is fun in my life. I never see my friends anymore. And getting my BSN won't mean a pay raise either.

If I were 20 years younger, I might not feel the same way, but as it looks now, it is going to take me 3 years to get all of these courses done. That gives me only about 8 -10 years of working left.

Any of you older diploma grad nurses out there? How are you keeping yourself motivated?

Hi,

I'm in 4510 for Spring 1 as well! I hope to see you there!

Cincinursemary, don't give up. You have made it this far so you obviously have the passion to achieve your BSN. I have to admit, I have wondered if all this school is worth everything I have had to sacrifice. Having my BSN won't make a bit of difference in my career or pay. I too am looking at about 10 years left (maybe a little more). I had to seriously sit down and question myself as to why I am doing this. Right now management at my job is making it almost unbearable to work there. I have been there too many years to just pack up and leave, not to mention now I am using the tuition reimbursement. I realized I am not doing this for anyone but me. I want my BSN. Maybe for no other reason than to hang it on the wall. But I know one thing, I will be proud of it. Keep going, you owe it to yourself.

Thanks........ It's nice to know that there are other old hens in the mix. I am actually a much better student now than I was so many years ago. I think for me it is the cost mixed with the time. I have to plan this out to see when I will really get done.

Does anyone know if the Nursing courses schedule is available for more than one term at a time? I thought I had see it one time, so that I could plan out the rest of my classes, but I can't find that anymore.
