Oh NO! Just got the SCOOP on my Chemistry Professor!

Published

So I have been super nervous and super anxious about taking Chemistry next semester since I failed it last year due to some issues and not being focused. I am 150 % more focused this year than last year but the pressure of keeping my GPA has been getting to me. Last year I took Chemistry on a Saturday with a Professor who didnt speak very well English (although it wasn't horrible). I chose to take it this year on Mondays and Wednesdays because the Saturday class was alot of information packed into one class. I thought that if I took the class twice a week that I would be able to retain the information better. Well, when I registered for the class at the beginning of the month, the Professor was TBD. I just checked back again today and the professor was selected, however when I went on Ratemyprofessor.com he has HORRIBLE reviews. Things like he speaks broken english, is not computer savvy so you cannot email him, he reads off of a powerpoint and makes up his own handwritten tests. Someone also said that he misgrades the exams and sometime put things on them that were not covered in class yet ! I even saw somene say that when they asked a question his response was "dont worry youll learn later" or "Its just Alegbra!" AHHHH...

Do you think I should drop his class? I already have all this anxiety over taking chemistry and I am scared that it'll be 10x worse with a horrible Professor. The only other option available would to be to take the class with the same professor I had last year on a Saturday again. All of the other classes are full as the science classes seem to be the first ones to go in my school. NEED ADVICE !!!

Ratemyprofessor had similar reviews for my Bio 211 professor. They were right on the head. The first test, I made a 75. It was terrible. Everyone failed the test. A few girls and I decided something had to be done. It was not just based on the failed test, it was also due to the manner in which he talked to us. He had a low opinion of anyone that wanted to become a nurse. He berated us daily. He would flat out call us stupid in no uncertain terms. Well, fast forward, he was fired and after that, when I had a test I was making in the range of 95-99. So I knew it was not me, it was actually him and his teaching methods. He was always unavailable. When you asked for extra help, lawd help you. While I will never be happy a person lost their job. I am happy that I was able to actually reach my potential.

More than likely the reviews are true. While the previous poster got better grades after her teacher was fired.. my class on the other had was not as fortunate. This guy was tenured 65 students this is the final break down of grades. One A, Two B's Three C's the rest D's and F's. Trust me we went to the department head, the dean and nothing was done, it was blamed on out learning ability! Its rare sometimes to take the same teacher and make an extremely better grade. Please find out who else teaches Chemistry. Good Luck!

Take another class. A bad professor makes it difficult to learn the material and can threaten your GPA.

I work at a community college. Unless the professor does something illegal, the school tends to side with the professor.

Also, avoid classes that don't list an instructor's name. Some teachers have such a bad reputations that the school won't post the instructor's name because students won't enroll! So they don't list the instructor in advance and then the students are stuck with a bad teacher.

Another "trick" at my school is that if a tenured professor is bad and doesn't have enough students enrolled in a class, it is combined with the class of a non-tenured instructor and the bad tenured instructor teaches the class. Crazy but true.

Try going to a professor that the class is full. Sometimes they can add a student to the class if there are physically extra seats in the class (room has 40 chairs and max 30 students) if you have a scheduling conflict and need that class time.

Are you kidding?? Im almost sure they didnt list his name in the beginning on purpose. How could they set us up for failure like this? I read the reviews and wanted to cry they were so bad. I am going to go to the school tomorrow after work and drop the class. I guess Ill be taking it on a Saturday again. I really need a good grade.

Also, keep checking until the day of the class. Sometimes school change professors on the first day of semester or even later

I had the same thing that happen to me at my school... Very bad instructor.... We'll my gpa went from 3.6 to 3.1........ If you feel bad about it .. Try to reschedule if possible .. My school looks at how many times that you dropped courses....

I always check out rate my professor before registering for classes. If more than one student says same thing 9 times out of 10 it's probably true. I'm with everybody else DROP IT!!

you can apply to another school as transient and transfer your grade to your initial school.

Just another perspective .... Many people go to Rate My Professors solely to complain, not to sing the praises of an awesome instructor. As long as we're throwing anecdotal evidence out there, I took physiology with a professor whose ratings were abysmal. Really, just horrid. Hers was the only class I could get into and she turned out to be an excellent instructor, just tough and exacting in her standards. Most of her awful reviews were from people complaining that that class was too difficult or that they thought she was mean. :sarcastic:
