  1. Hi, I too would be interested in what anyone has to say. I also have stargardts disease. I was diagnosed 5 years ago at 25. I have just graduated nursing school in May and will take my NCLEX next month. I start working on a surgical floor the first week in August. I have worked with my vision loss as a PCT for the last 2 years and got through nursing school with my vision loss with minimal accommodations but there were times where it was frustrating. I just can't do things as fast- there is always an extra step. However I do have to say that my instructors always told me that I was one of their best clinical students. At work the flowsheets I use as a PCT are basic so I can manage, and I carry a handheld paperweight magnifier in my pocket for reading urine dip results and small print. The computer has a magnifier if I need to enlarge something. I am nervous to be a nurse though, as all new students are. I am mostly worried about people not understanding. Discriminating against me. I know that I just need to get acclimated and I always find ways around things- we just adjust as human beings but I have not been a nurse yet so so cannot give you much advice, but that I've been online and seen stories of bedside nurses with vision loss and it is still possible as long as you can do the job with accommodation.
  2. So I am starting nursing school at the end of August. I am currently working for a big hospital in an outpatient clinic as a Medical Assistant. My nursing program is a full time day program so I have been interviewing for inpatient positions within the hospital to work nights/evenings/weekends, remain employed and have some income coming in. I plan to only work 24 hrs during school. I want to stay employed with the hospital as job prospects will be better once I graduate. I received two job offers today and am struggling to decide which one is better for me while being in school. The hospital is an hour away from where I live also so this is a big factor in my decision-making process. Both jobs are "patient care associate" positions which is pretty much the hospital's version of a CNA. Job # 1 is in the Pediatrics department; 24 hr position, meaning three 8 hr day/evening shifts, usually a 3-11 or a 7-3. Job # 2 is in the Adult Oncology department, 24 hr position, meaning two 12 hr NIGHT shifts, 7p-7a I have never worked nights before but imagine it would interfere less with my school schedule and I could bring my school work to work with me as it tends to be much slower. I would also be able to get my daughter settled with the sitter before I went to work and it would allow me a day or two to just sleep and study. Also having to travel an hour away for work only twice a week as opposed to three times per week seems more appealing. On the other hand, one of the nurses I work with used to do nights and she told me it is EXHAUSTING and may not be the best for someone in school. The three-8 hr shift job is in pediatrics, and I want to be a Pediatric nurse. This would be a career move but I am worried that three days a week might be a lot. The unit it willing to work around my school schedule but I have my doubts. I am SOOOOO confused and I have to accept an offer by Wednesday. Any insight?????????
  3. I went! The schedules are crazy! My clinical and lab are during the day. Any schedule though gives you little to no opportunity to work, unless you do evenings, and even that will be tough. I am currently working outpatient for a hospital and had a few interviews last week for inpatient positions. I plan to do 24 hrs, 2 12 HR 7p-7a shifts at night. I don't see where else I can fit in work. This all feels so real now. It'll be a handful but I'm excited!
  4. Lol I want it during the day so if I get evening I wonder if we can switch with someone...hmm
  5. Hi, I will be going to Norwalk Community Colkege and will be attending orientation on Friday. I had reached out to the advisor to ask about the clinical schedule as I too am trying to rearrange my work schedule and she said that they will be distributing schedules at orientation. What she could tell me is that for the first four weeks that we would be in lab on Wed and Thurs. Half of the class will have lab in the morning and half in the evening. After that, we will go off to our individual clinical sites. Hope that helps!
  6. I gave up my seat because I am going to attend a program closer to home. I hope one of you guys get it! Good luck!
  7. I am going to go to the school next week and see what I can work out. I have been shut down so far by the staff in the business office. They're pretty strict on summer classes being paid in full, but it won't hurt to attempt to reach someone higher in the chain of command.
  8. It is a 5 week course. unfortunately they do not offer payment plans for the summer either...ugh, but you are right, I am very worried about taking these two classes together, just not sure what to do.
  9. Hello..so I have been accepted into the nursing program at my community college for the Fall 2016 semester. The only pre-requisite that I have not taken is Microbiology and I am required to have it completed with a C by the end of my first semester. This means that I can take it over the summer or with Nursing 101 In the Fall. My counselor recommended that I take it over the summer since first semester nursing courses are labor intensive as well as is Microbiology, but unfortunately my school does not offer financial aid for summer courses and I would need to pay for the class out of pocket. I really do not have the money nor the time off of work to take the summer course as it is only offered during the day 4 days a week and I am hoping to work full time up until I start in August. I was wondering if anyone has taken Microbiology with nursing 101 and was successful. any insight? is it doable? If I do not pass with a C than I am unable to move forward in the Spring with my second semester classes. HELP!
  10. Grades are posted! Hope everyone who took AP2 this Spring passed like me!!! Now it's finally official!!! Whew! I was so nervous!
  11. I took it on Monday 5/2...this week. We were the last test group
