Applied for RN and day LPN; accepted into day LPN

TEAS 88.2

Pre-Req GPA 3.4

Nothing done yet - no physical, no uniforms, no CPR nothing!!! Anyone want to do CPR together if possible?? Also, who wants to help me get together ~$1500 in the next 6w so I can pay for classes, books and the first month of $600/mo daycare?? :crying2: Ahhhhhh!!!

Ok, those were the other two I knew of, but I didn't know if there were any others floating around :) I am sort of computer illiterate!

I will do some investigating tomorrow!!!!

Thanks!

I posted on titers earlier in the thread - from Pinellas County Health Dept - to give an idea on cost.

Here are my opinions based on what friends have told me when going through nursing school (in the last 1-3 years):

I'd get the best stethoscope you an afford. The $18 bookstore ones work, but they aren't going to be great or easy to hear with. This stethoscope is not just for school - it'll carry forward with you in your working career, so don't skimp! Or if you don't have the $$ now, just get the $18 one and when you can afford it...upgrade. Then you will have the benefit of opinions from your classmates on what they like, why, etc.

I've heard to start with tennis shoes (that conform to school requirements) in a brand that you already know, that fit well and are comfortable. Adjust from there if you want/when the budget allows, etc. Each person is different so what works for your neighbor may not work for you. I'm in K-Swiss right now, but can't stand the way my socks get sucked down into my shoe - no matter how tight I tie them. I normally wear Asics or Nike. Guess what I'm going back to when I get the $? I'll also be trying other styles of socks to save my sanity!

Watches...analog (numbers on a face) with a second hand that can clearly be read. Should probably be easy to clean (just in case) and water resistant. Does not have to be expensive, just practical & functional - and if it looks good too - bonus!

And yes, the bookstore has the patches, behind the counter. You just ask for them, either tell them LPN or RN or they will ask to make sure you get the correct ones.

Wow, you guys are fast!!

Anyone use support hose or think it might be a good idea to get? I know we will be on our feet all day so I'm trying to avoid getting varicose veins or more aches and pains.

Everyone will also be different with shoe needs. I can't emphasize that enough. I started waiting tables over the summer and have gone through 3 different types of shoes until I found some that work. I bought some Unisex Clogs (Dansko's) that have a frame and major arch support. Well, having too much turned my arches black and blue. Then went down to Echo's...not enough support. Finally, I got some MBT's (Sketcher's Shape Ups copied them) that feel like I'm on Jello all day. I advise you guys looking for shoes to go and really look into what will work best for you. Don't wait until you BEGIN clinicals to find what will work. Otherwise, you can end up with bruising and leg and back pain. Consider this a PSA...

School requirements for shoes are rather vague. Anyone have any idea for what will be acceptable?

The SHOE PSA was very logical but I needed to hear it because I have honestly forgotten what it's like to have no choice but to stand for an entire shift. doh!

Also, looking forward to hearing thoughts on support or compression socks or hose.

I have a pair of Timberland professional, that I wear for work as a Unit Secretary and my feet have never hurt but the heel slips a little. So I ordered Keen PTC and Alegria Debra, I have also considered these Danskos. Many of the nurses on my floor wear the Alegria and love them, the only local place I know to order them is the UCH pepin uniform store, on the first floor of UCH. You can try on the shoe in other colors there but they have to order it in white however you will get it quicker by ordering on the internet.

As for the uniforms, there is not any place in town other than the book store that I know of that carries them in stock...at least the top. I ordered mine off the internet and had them 3 days later. I wish we were like USF, thet just have to wear white...any style.

I have not ordered my stethescope yet, but I think mine will be a Littmann Cardiology III and I will engrave my email address on the head so that if I ever lose it someone can contact me.

As for the medical part I had titers drawn when I started UCH as well as a current TB test, I need to check on my tetorifice. I will have a physical done in the next couple of weeks with my Dr. I am very grateful we have insurance because my DH is in the Air Force.

Just got my packet! Lots to read and do, but I'm glad they sent them out already!

Just got my packet! Lots to read and do, but I'm glad they sent them out already!

What's in it?? I am still waiting for mine :(

Do we know anything about textbooks for our first NUR course?

Yes there is like 3 pages of textbooks! But the first 2 weeks we will just be in the classroom, no clinicals. It says it's advisable to put the nursing manual/handbook in a 3 ring binder because we will be going over it the first day of class. Street clothes are to be worn in classroom and uniforms are only for clinicals.

3 PAGES! O.M.G.

I want ISBN's ;) lol...but I am serious. I have to start reseaching :) I hope my packet comes tomorrow! Is it super big?

Nope not too big and lots of stuff everyone's been talking about and already preparing for, so not that overwhelming. Lots of forms to fill out and a response form due July 29 to check off you will attend the orientation on August 3rd or can't make it, or even refuse your seat. I just need to come up with extra money to get my physcial and titers/vaccines done $300, background check is $64, insurance is $23 for the year... it adds up.
