OCC - for Fall 2012 or Jan 2012 prospective students!

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi everyone! Okay so I decided to make a seperate thread for those of us seeing what our options are because we got the dreaded letter from OCC. It was getting hard to filter out the information pertinent to us in the general OCC thread.

I just want to tell everyone not to give up.

I had a meeting with a counselor yesterday, who basically assured me that any drastic changes made to OCC nursing admission policy could NOT be implemented in the very next admission cycle. He said that he had been a counselor for over 16 years, and the last time they made a drastic change (like from waitlist to gpa based) they grandfathered in everybody who would have been 'caught up' in the transition.

I had a 3.824 gpa. I had three classes that were not straight A's (An A- in both american government and english composition two, as well as the dreaded B in A&P 1). I am retaking all three and am going to seriousely aim for all A's. The gpa cutoff is gonna be a 3.9 something and I don't want to have to worry about not getting in again. I am going to do my best to get all A's.

I met with the counselor to discuss my options and see what to do at this point. I was considering going LPN but I don't think i'm going to do that anymore because my biggest aim is to get my RN as soon as possible. The LPN to RN transition program is only offerred every even year. What this means for us? If I were, for example to start the LPN program in January of 2012, it would be over in like March of 2013. Then I couldn't start the transition program until like July of 2014. Then I wouldn't be done with the transition program and have my RN until December of 2015! This versus the ADN RN program, which would start in the Fall of 2012 and finish in like early May of 2014.

Good luck to all of those still trying! We can't give up!!!!!

I have a 4.0 so this wait should be just a formality for me, but I can't help but be nervous that somehow something will get screwed up and they won't pick up the A that I earned when I repeated one class. Crazy how well you must do in pre-req's to just get into this program -- at least the competitiveness prepares us for working hard in what I'm sure will be waaaayyy tougher classes!

That's what I think, it's good prep. I had a difficult teacher in one of my Fall classes and whenever I'd get frustrated with her I would just tell myself that it was good experience for the nursing program, where I hear the instructors are difficult. Still, it's ridiculous that we (WANTTOBE and myself) have such high GPAs and have to worry that they won't be good enough. I just want to know if I am going to get in or not!!! Hurry up March!

Hi there,

It's been a while since I've posted anything here, but I also will be waiting for my letter to come, along with everyone else here. This will be my second time around. I, too, had applied last year but my GPA did not make the cutoff. Because of that, I decided to take three of the classes over and now have a 4.0. I agree that it is ridiculous that many of us have limited choices, and in a way, are force to retake classes that were already decent grades to begin with. And just because one had retaken a class and ended up with a better grade, it doesn't guarantee that person will get in. Like my friend, she repeated three of her classes and now has a 3.974 but is worry that won't be good enough. Anyways, good luck to everyone here.

Now I'm getting REALLY nervous...It sounds like everyone has such high GPA's. I know there were 40 4.0s last year but now Im worried there will be 200 this year, with so many people retaking classes. I recalculated my GPA and thankfully it's actually a 3.970 but again, will that be good enough?? Arrghhh.... Well, good luck to everyone! I hope we all get good news in March!

Hi there. kizeemi I totally know where you are coming from, and I feel the same way. It is really frustrating, I really really wish I had a 4.0. I will be EXTREMELY upset if I don't get into the nursing program because of an A- in political government. I repeated the class and I still ended up not getting higher than an A- so it is what it is at this point.

I called the nursing department earlier today and spoke so someone named Mary who told me that the accelerated program would not be happenning this year. So that's another sixty people taking up spots :(

I don't know what to do. I am really, really scared that I won't get in. Here's to hoping good news for all of us coming in March....

LOL! Thats what my A- is in too! Let's try not to worry. I've just decided that we're getting in, so we will! ;)

Since I'm not taking any classes this semester I have nothing to do but sit here and obsessively worry about getting into the nursing program. What I'm wondering is is if they ("they" being the people at OCC who decide who gets in,) are already reviewing apps and have an idea of how many 4.0's, etc, are applying. Also, I know that the letters go out sometime in March but I can't remember when in March we should expect them. Anyone know?

I think it's mid March if memory serves. Perhaps look back on the old thread from last year of people waiting around? I know - I don't have any classes right now either so I worry about that class I retook not getting factored in. Hang in there!

March 15 is when they are supposed to come. But they may come early, they may come later. Last year they came about a week before the 15th, and the year before that, about a week late.

Good luck...if you get in you'll need it!

Another month gone by -- we are getting so close to decision day! How's everyone doing? I feel like I'm waiting for a big storm hit - the anticipation is killing me!

I am going nuts waiting!! Counting down the days. Hopefully the letters go out on time (or early!) Here's one last "Good luck!" to everyone... I really hope to meet you all this fall. Post when you get your letters :)

Patiently waiting for the letter...Although I heard # of applicants was down this year. Just heard from a friend also applying this cycle that there was around 350 applicants this time around...at the info meeting the counselor said years prior had 5-600 apps. I wonder how or if that will affect the GPA cut off this year....Good luck everyone!
