OCC - for Fall 2012 or Jan 2012 prospective students!

U.S.A. Michigan

Hi everyone! Okay so I decided to make a seperate thread for those of us seeing what our options are because we got the dreaded letter from OCC. It was getting hard to filter out the information pertinent to us in the general OCC thread.

I just want to tell everyone not to give up.

I had a meeting with a counselor yesterday, who basically assured me that any drastic changes made to OCC nursing admission policy could NOT be implemented in the very next admission cycle. He said that he had been a counselor for over 16 years, and the last time they made a drastic change (like from waitlist to gpa based) they grandfathered in everybody who would have been 'caught up' in the transition.

I had a 3.824 gpa. I had three classes that were not straight A's (An A- in both american government and english composition two, as well as the dreaded B in A&P 1). I am retaking all three and am going to seriousely aim for all A's. The gpa cutoff is gonna be a 3.9 something and I don't want to have to worry about not getting in again. I am going to do my best to get all A's.

I met with the counselor to discuss my options and see what to do at this point. I was considering going LPN but I don't think i'm going to do that anymore because my biggest aim is to get my RN as soon as possible. The LPN to RN transition program is only offerred every even year. What this means for us? If I were, for example to start the LPN program in January of 2012, it would be over in like March of 2013. Then I couldn't start the transition program until like July of 2014. Then I wouldn't be done with the transition program and have my RN until December of 2015! This versus the ADN RN program, which would start in the Fall of 2012 and finish in like early May of 2014.

Good luck to all of those still trying! We can't give up!!!!!

lol............i hate writing also, once your in the nursing program you will long for the days of comp 1510. i have never written so much in all my life, and the worse part is, the instructors are never happy with what you write anyway. they all have different ways of grading papers even though they arent suppose too.

good luck for 2012

Whosurdaddy, apart from numerous care plans, what sorts of documents are regularly required to be written for the nursing program? Are there many research reports? Just curious.

TIA!

there are the nursing care plans of course, but there is also at least one major project due each semester, (qw page avg) there are journals that have to be written every week in med surg and psych, there are teaching papers you have for psych, worksheets for psych, community projects for med surg and ob, a group nursing care plan for ob. there are prep points (not really writing papers, but your writing out answers to questions) for lab, and theory. there is a process recording for psych. and a movie paper for psych for extra credit. if your not studying for a test your writing something. then like i said the instructors are never happy with what you wrote cause your writing the way the instructor from the last semester asked you too and this semesters instructor wants it their way.

not to mention im writing on this blog.............god help me:)

whosur, oh no you have me worried. I have only taken the first level English class, never had Comp 2, as it is not required for LPN. Writing is my Achilles heal. APA is slow torture to me. I just had to write a "paper" for clinical. I want to be Nurse, not a writer. I wish they would ask us to take more English classes if they expect beautiful APA style papers. I feel ill prepared for that part of Nursing school.

i dont know about the LPN program but yeah writing is huge in the RN program. doesnt seem to matter if your an expert writer or not. (conspiracy theory moment) I sometimes think that they use these papers as an excuse to harass the people that they deem unworthy of being a nurse. I heard one girl had to re-write a paper 6 times.

dont worry about it though. everyone will get at least one paper returned to be fixed and more than one nursing care plan returned to them. dont take anything said to you to heart. if you take things personally in this program you will crack under the stress.

i just talked to one of the nursing students that started this fall. He said that nursing school is no harder than the effort you put into it to get A's, during your pre-req's. I just wanted to put a little encouragment out there to all the perspective nursing students. It seems that no one has anything "hopeful" to say about the nursing program anymore. Remember, alot of us are working very hard to accomplish our dream. The nursing students now are not any more determined than the future students. If you want to be a nurse and you are willing to do the work to get there, YOU WILL!! Remember people, this is not pre-med its an ADN program at a community college.Im not dumbing this down either. Im just saying IT IS possible for you to accomplish, students pass every year! ;)

That depends on what you mean by "hard". If you talking to a student in Fundamentals that is way easier than med-surg and OB. Its not hard as in you cant understand or comprehend the material. Its hard because of the time you have to put in for the nursing program. We have a very large volume of work that is constant. I feel like Im working a 7 day a week job right now in this program. No such thing as weekends or holidays. Guess what Im doing over Thanksgiving "break"? I will be studying between making pies and Turkey.

By the way I just got another APA paper back last week and got 100% even tho I am not a good writer.

Im in the class of 2013. Is it a lot of work? yes. Is it possible to do well? yes. Its really up to each individual. Like someone earlier said, if you really are motivated to succeed, you will. You will like some instructors, some you wont. You will grasp some material better than others. There are good days and bad days.

The best advice I can give to anyone wanting to get in and eventually graduate is find the best study method for you and do the work (really, just do it!), dont expect anything to come easy (in fact, just dont have any expectations other than that you have to WORK), and take care of yourself (with good food, enough rest, and an occasional social outing..yes take a break every now and then!)

oh and stop worrying! It is just taking up precious study time!

Certainly I'm not the only one playing the waiting game? I submitted my application back in October. Anyone else out there?

I'm waiting! I submitted my application and am waiting for march to come around..... waiting sucks.

Im waiting for the letter too. I just finished all of my pre-reqs in December and I have about a 3.96 overall GPA. Im worried thats not going to be good enough. What did everyone else get? (If you dont mind me asking. If you do, just dont answer. ;))

My gpa is a 3.9727. I hope it's enough. I applied last time with a 3.824 and it wasn't enough so hopefully this time it will be...
