OCC - 2010 applicants / 2011 ADN prospective students

Published

Hey everyone! Im back for my second application into the ADN program at OCC ::sigh:: As I did in the thread I created last year, I am creating a new one for all those applying to the nursing progam for next fall. Lets keep in touch and keep one another updated. Good luck guys!!! :)

I know OCC tells you that it won't transfer, micro w/o lab, but it does transfer for almost every BSN program around. Just FYI

^Oh that's good to know since that's the one I took, lol. I hear it doesn't at OU though and that's where I wanted my BSN from when the time comes.:crying2:

I just don't have it in me anymore, I cannot convince myself to retake Micro. Why do you need such a high gpa? I don't get it. They are just making it too hard

It does for sure at OU cause that was where i was going to transfer to and i actually went a semester there :)

Addison- i agree completely, thats why i transferred and im in bsn program as we speak and ill be done in the same amount of time.

What BSN program are you in?

Madonna University and loving it :) Seriously though, small class sizes, cheaper then U of D and Wayne State, and great professors. I know I sound like an advertisement but it was the best decision I ever made, and I almost didn't. I was so discouraged by all the different schools and each one needing this extra class or test that I with having such a young family I never wanted to go back. My husband encouraged me to give it a shot after meeting with a counsler and I told him how nice it was but I never thought I'ld make it in but...I took his advice and here I am finally a nursing student:heartbeat

NFS 2220

what does that class mean?

and what gpa do you need to get into madonna?

Addison- I honestly think that the reason the gpa is so high for OCC is simply because they CAN demand it to be that high because there are so many people who are interested. Personally, I believe that a strong reason for it's popularity is financial....it is one of the cheapest ways to get your RN around. The entire ADN RN program tuition wise will run you less than 5,000 dollars. That is insanely affordable for this area of the country. So you have everyone and their mother (to use the technical term) trying to get in.

I guess I just hope that they don't drastically change their admission standards. Because my gpa is already fairly high, I don't have to retake a ton of classes to make it a 4.0. I have decided that for myself, I am going to retake the three classes that I don't have complete A's in (this includes two A-'s, ridiculous I know) this summer. If by the end of the summer semester I don't have a straight 4.0 in the ADN RN prereqs, I am going to apply for the LPN program. If I do have a straight 4.0 then ill wait it out for the ADN RN program. But I'm not waiting unless I have a 4.0!

Hi WANT2BANURSESOON!

Getting in the ADN program this go-round could still be a possibility, since some who have been accepted may decide not to attend for various reasons: change of career plans/direction, attendance at another school, etc. Your GPA is very high. It's great that you have a plan B and plan C, but don't give up hope yet!

But whatever happens, good luck!

The gpa requirements are so high at OCC because they DONT penalize a student for taking classes multiple times, or for taking classes at other institutions. This means someone that took A&P 5 times to get an A at some other school has a better chance than someone that took all of their classes at OCC and got an A- the first time he/she took it.

I hope (even though Im accepted for this fall) that they change these 2 things for subsequent enrollments. It gives an unfair disadvantage to more affluent students that can afford to take classes over and over again. Plus anyone can get an A if they take something 3-4 times...it doesnt mean they will make a good nurse. They dont even ask for an essay or look at related experiences. Just becaues you have a 4.0 doesnt mean you will make a good nurse...as evidenced in whosurdaddy's thread that talks about how many people drop out or flunk the program.

I guess it is easier to just take the highest numbers this way..although I dont see why it has to take so long to know if you are admitted...EMU takes about a month and they have a whole point system looking at many different factors and just as many applicants to go through.

most other nursing programs only allow you to take a class 2 times (and then average those 2 grades, not take the highest) to get your B or better...AND they give preference to those that have taken classes at their school. OCC (as far as I know) is the only school that has such loose criteria for admission....if those 2 things were changed to mirror other schools' programs...the GPA cut off would end up coming down to a more reasonable level.

I went to an info session before christmas last year (my second one) and it was hinted that these things might be changing in the next couple of years. I hope so.

I believe if you are a transferred student to OCC and holds the same GPA as an OCC student. They accept the OCC student first. That's I know.

I agree that a straight A student is not equal a good nurse. Andin my class this year, we have lost 5 people ao far! Yeah, due to personal issues-- money, time, work load and etc.

Now that you mention it, I do believe I have heard the same thing, Jaaaey77. But that GPA is the culprit. its that "take it as much as you can afford so you get your A" thing that makes GPA cut off so dang high.
